    Notes: Summary Embolization of three surgically difficult cerebral aneurysms was performed using our newly developed non-adhesive embolic material, EVAL mixture (ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer). Conventional embolic materials such as detachable balloons or microcoils were not used because of a large or irregular aneurysmal neck. After temporary occlusion of the parent artery with a superselective balloon catheter, the EVAL mixture was slowly injected through a microcatheter placed in the aneurysm or parent artery. The locations of the aneurysms were anterior communicating artery, basilar artery-posterior cerebral artery and basilar artery-anterior inferior cerebellar artery (BA-AICA). One aneurysmal occlusion and 2 parent artery occlusions were performed. Patients had no persistent deficits. The patient with the BA-AICA aneurysm associated with an arteriovenous malformation died of rupture of the residual AVM due to haemodynamic change 2 weeks after embolization. In selected and limited cases, embolization of surgically difficult cerebral aneurysms using EVAL mixture was more effective and safer than embolization using conventional embolic materials such as balloons and microcoils.

    Notes: Summary A hydraulic vascular model of the vertebrobasilar artery with an autoregulatory mechanism was constructed. The haemodynamic effect of superficial temporal artery (STA)-posterior cerebral artery (PCA) bypass was investigated in cases of bilateral vertebral artery (VA) occlusion and basilar artery (BA) occlusion. Assuming therapeutic BA occlusion for basilar bifurcation aneurysms, the flow volume through the P 1 segment of the PCA was determined in relation to diameters of the posterior communicating artery (PCom). The bypass increases both flow volume and intraluminal pressure in the pressure range below 60 mm Hg, while it increases only pressure in the autoregulatory range above 60 mm Hg. Its haemodynamic effect is more marked in BA occlusion than in VA occlusion. The averaged values of the increase in flow volume are 29.0±4.3% (mean±SD) and 16.5+1.0%, respectively. The total flow volume increase of the vertebrobasilar system is usually lower than the flow volume measured at the bypassed STA. The difference between the two is equal to the simultaneous decrease in flow volume through the PComs. Flow volume through the P1 segment can be expressed as a function of the PComs diameter ratio squared. A hydraulic simulation study will be useful for speculating on the haemodynamic effects of these operative procedures.

    Notes: Cross-geometrical Ni–Fe/Co/Al–AlO/Co/Ni–Fe/Fe–Mn/Ni–Fe tunnel junctions were fabricated by magnetron sputtering. To form the insulating layer, an Al layer was reverse sputtered in an atmosphere of either oxygen or oxygen–argon mixture at low power after deposition. The oxidization time necessary to form an AlO barrier was much shorter than that by natural oxidization, lasting for only a half to a few minutes. By adding argon to oxygen, the oxidization was slowed down and high MR ratios were obtained for a wide range of time. A magnetoresistance (MR) ratio of 16% was observed in the as-deposited junction when the barrier was oxidized in oxygen plasma for 35 s. In addition, the MR ratio increased to 24% by annealing at 300 °C. In as-deposited junctions, the tunnel resistances were increased by increasing the plasma oxidization time, but the MR ratios gradually decreased. The estimated tunnel barrier width increased and the barrier height decreased with the plasma oxidization time. After annealing, the MR ratio increased only for those junctions oxidized for short times. This suggests that the remaining Al between the AlO and the Co surface plays an important role in the effects of annealing. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract We have developed a new liquid material for embolisation of arteriovenous malformations: a mixture of methyl and butyl methacrylate, plus dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer (Eudragit-E) in a solvent consisting of ethanol and iopamidol. Upon contact with aqueous substances, Eudragit-E precipitates rapidly and forms a soft elastic sponge within 3 s, as the ethanol diffuses. In blood, the positively charged Eudragit-E aggregates the negatively charged blood elements. Transcatheter embolisation of 4 canine and 52 rat renal arteries was feasible. Histological studies revealed no acute inflammatory reaction within 1 week, but mild to moderate reactions in the subacute and chronic stages. No recanalisation was seen. Because of its unique properties and excellent thrombogenicity the Eudragit-E mixture seems a promising embolic material.

    Notes: Abstract The association between intracranial aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) is well documented. Recent advances in the understanding of the haemodynamics of this association encourage an aggressive approach to these aneurysms. However, the pathophysiology of these aneurysms is not fully understood and a strategy for their management has not been established. We describe seven patients, with eight aneurysms, on the feeding arteries of AVMs. The aneurysms could be divided into those located 1. proximally on the superficial feeding artery (type I; 4 aneurysms); 2. distally on the superficial feeding artery (type II; 3 aneurysms); and 3. on the deep feeding artery (type III; 1 aneurysm). All aneurysms were treated by the endovascular procedure prior to, or simultaneously with, treatment of the AVM, using detachable coils or liquid embolic material. All aneurysms were obliterated successfully, with no adverse events. Each patient further received treatment of the AVM. None of the patients suffered intracranial haemorrhage after treatment for the aneurysms. Based on our experiences, we discuss the indications for this approach for each type of aneurysm. We believe endovascular treatment could be an important alternative for treatment of aneurysms associated with AVMs, thus reducing the risk of haemorrhage.

    Notes: Abstract Spinal cord lesions have seldom been described in cases with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). We thus decided to analyze spinal cord lesions by microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) immunohistochemistry in six cases of PSP, five cases of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and two cases of corticobasal degeneration (CBD), all of which cause parkinsonism, while six patients without any neurological disease served as controls. In the PSP cases, the MAP2 expression in the cervical spinal cords significantly decreased in the medial division of the anterior gray horn, intermediate gray and posterior gray horn, but showed no significant change in the substantia gelatinosa and lateral division of the anterior gray horn. The thoracic and lumbar spinal cords were well preserved for MAP2 immunoreactivity. In addition, the globose type neurofibrillary tangles and glial fibrillary tangles were more conspicuous in the cervical than in the thoracic and lumbar spinal cord in PSP cases. On the other hand, the PD and CBD cases showed no significant decrease of MAP2 immunoreactivity in the spinal cords. The small neurons, which are located rather selectively in the intermediate zone of the spinal cord, are considered to be mostly present in the interneurons, and are also thought to play a role in various types of focal dystonia, such as neck dystonia. We therefore consider the distinct decrease in the MAP2-positive neuronal processes in the cervical spinal cord may partly reflect the loss of interneurons and may, thereby, possibly cause nuchal dystonia.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) expression in anterior horn neurons in the cervical and lumbar spinal cords of 19 cases of adult-onset sporadic amyotrophic lateral scerlosis (ALS) using immunohistochemistry. Specimens from 7 patients without neurological disease served as controls. MAP2 expression decreased in the anterior gray horn of all ALS cases and in the intermediate gray of several ALS cases. Such reduction correlated with the degree of degeneration or neuronal loss in anterior horn cells and with the clinical symptoms of limb weakness. Cytopathologically, the MAP2 immunoreactivity decreased corresponding to the occurrence of individual signs of neuronal degeneration, such as chromatolytic neurons, shrunken neurons and pigmented neurons. MAP2 expression was relatively well preserved in the specimens in which spheroids are conspicuous. The findings of this study demonstrate MAP2 to be an excellent marker for the detection and quantification of anterior horn degeneration in ALS.

    Notes: Abstract AgNiO2, a model compound of an S=1/2 triangular lattice, was studied by muon spin relaxation in addition to ac, dc susceptibility, electrical resistivity and neutron diffraction. The relaxation rate shows a sharp peak at around TN=28 K followed by a sudden decrease of initial asymmetry indicating a magnetic ordering. Three internal fields ranging from 0.2 to 0.3 T were obtained from the muon precession period. However, a neutron diffraction experiment failed to detect any magnetic order at low temperatures. From these results, it was concluded that magnetic coherence is confined to small domain compared with the coherence length of neutron diffraction due to spin frustration.
