Notes: Abstract. Background: Although a specific syndrome of the uterus didelphys, obstructive hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis had been reported in gynecologic literatures, it is not familiar to radiologists. We introduce this syndrome with radiological, especially MR findings. Methods: Imaging findings and medical records of seven patients with this syndrome were retrospectively reviewed. Results: MR clearly demonstrated uterus didelphys with obstructed hemivagina in six of the seven patients. A remaining one showed uterus didelphys with left-sided hematometra and hematosalpinx who had undergone vaginal septum incision prior to the MR. We could also recognize ipsilateral renal agenesis in all five patients, in whom renal areas were examined on MR. After vaginal septum resection, symptoms disappeared in six patients. We could observe the disappearance of the obstructive complications with MR in three patients. Conclusions: MR can do much for the early diagnosis and the prevention against further complications of this condition because it can demonstrate the müllerian duct anomaly complicated with obstructed hemivagina in detail and even ipsilateral renal agenesis.

Notes: Summary  Whether and when unruptured aneurysms or aneurysmal rests following incomplete surgery result in subsequent bleeding are major concerns for neurosurgeons. By calculating the annual growth rate of aneurysms in long-term follow-up angiography (partly supplemented with MR-imaging and/or MR-angiography), we attempted to determine the surgical indications for these aneurysms. Long-term follow-up angiography ranging from one to 20 years was carried out on five patients whose ruptured aneurysms had been incompletely occluded, six patients with multiple aneurysms, of which the ruptured ones had been completely oblitered at operation and the small unruptured aneurysms, missed or misdiagnosed, and eight patients with unruptured aneurysms which were asymptomatic or symptomatic. The correlation of annual aneurysm growth rate to subsequent bleeding was investigated. Four out of six fast-growing aneurysms with high annual growth rates (more than 8% increase per year) resulted in subsequent bleeding whereas none of the fourteen slow-growing aneurysms with low annual growth rates (less than 8% increase per year) led to bleeding (Fisher's exact test; p〈0.01). Hypertension, patient age and aneurysmal location showed no significant correlation to the annual growth rate (Fisher's exact test; p〉0.05). This study suggests that aneurysmal rests after incomplete surgery and missed or misdiagnosed multiple or incidental aneurysms which are fast growing have a high possibility of subsequent bleeding and should be operated on as soon as possible.

Notes: Summary A long-term follow-up study covering between one and twenty-two years after surgery was carried out on 177 patients with direct operations for cerebral aneurysms. Rebleeding was detected in five out of 18 patients with incomplete operations; one patient within 6 months and four patients within 5 to 8 yeras after surgery. The rebleeding rate of incompletely operated patients in the first decade was similar to that of untreated patients with ruptured aneurysms. This suggests that wrapping, coating and incomplete clipping procedures provide some protection against rebleeding in the first 6 months but little in the period extending beyond 5 years after surgery. Showing two types of newly-formed aneurysms after complete surgery and enlarged residual aneurysms after incomplete surgery, the possibility of rebleeding from these aneurysms is discussed in the present report.

Notes: We have isolated a mitochondrial rps7 gene from sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. cv. TK81-O). It is present in a single genomic environment, with northern blot analysis showing transcription of this gene. Sequence analysis of RT-PCR-derived cDNA of rps7 showed that three RNA-editing events occurred on rps7 mRNAs. As far as we know, this is the first report of the complete identification of the RNA editing of a mitochondrial rps7 in the angiosperms.

Notes: Abstract To explore the utility of flow cytometry (FCM) for the diagnosis of histopathology of salivary gland tumors, fresh materials taken at surgery from 23 Warthin’s tumors, 57 pleomorphic adenomas, and 14 malignant tumors were analyzed for DNA ploidy and proliferative cell activities, including S-phase fraction (SPF), G2- plus M-phase fraction (G2M), and Ki-67-positive fraction. To facilitate this study, glands were taken from all major salivary sites and minor glands in the head and neck. DNA aneuploidy was not detected in the benign tumors. Nine of 14 malignant tumors showed DNA aneuploidy. The percentage of SPF or G2M of the malignant tumors was significantly higher than those of the benign tumors. The percentage of Ki-67-positive fraction of pleomorphic adenomas was comparable to that of malignant tumors and was significantly higher than that of Warthin’s tumors. Ki-67 of 20% as a cut-off had a sensitivity of 88%, specificity of 100%, and accuracy of 91% for differentiating pleomorphic adenomas from Warthin’s tumors. In analyzing DNA content and proliferative activities by FCM, we could distinguish among the three major histopathologies of salivary gland tumors. Warthin’s tumors showed low SPF+G2M with low Ki-67, pleomorphic adenomas had low SPF+G2M with high Ki-67, and malignant tumor showed high SPF+G2M with high Ki-67. The high percentage of the Ki-67-positive fraction seen in pleomorphic adenomas may reflect their potential biological aggressiveness manifested as tumor recurrence or malignant transformation.

Notes: Conclusions In view of the marked increase in urine methanol concentration during the continued injection of an antimold agent as observed in our animal experiments, it was considered that the workers engaged in mildewproofing spraying of antimold agents were in a state of intoxication due to methanol at the time of their spraying operations. Moreover, the results of our animal experiments showed that 10 days after the discontinuation of injection, the blood and urine methanol concentrations recovered to their previous values before the injection of the antimold agent. This was consistent with the fact that the urine methanol concentration of the mildewproofing workers was within the normal limit 10 days after the spraying operation. Accordingly, to prevent poisoning from antimold agent during mildewproofing operations, we advise the following measures: 1) Wearing a mask during the spraying operation, 2) Using ethanol (at a concentration of 10% or less rather than a large amount) instead of methanol. These countermeasures were determined on the basis of our estimation that it might be possible to prevent methanol-induced health impairment if the use of methanol is discontinued.

Notes: Abstract We have constructed a physical map of the mitochondrial DNA of a cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) sugar beet line, TK81-MS, and compared it with that published for normal fertile sugar beet (cv. TK81-O) to clarify the differences between the CMS and normal mitochondrial genomes. The TK81-MS genome is present as a single circular molecule of 481.8 kb, or as two molecules of 184.9 and 296.9 kb. The CMS genome was found to be highly rearranged relative to the normal mitochondrial genome, with at least fifteen rearrangement and/or inversion events being required to align the two DNAs. Analysis of transcription patterns of known mitochondrial genes and rearranged regions revealed six genes, coxI, coxII, atpA, atp6, rps3, and orf324, whose expression is altered in the CMS line relative to the normal line. Of these six, only the coxI transcript pattern differs between male-sterile and fertility-restored genotypes, making it likely that the coxI locus is involved in mediating CMS in sugar beet.
