    Notes: Abstract. A mistletoe lectin was isolated from water extracts of Korean mistletoe, a subspecies of Viscum album, grown on Quercus mongolica using CM-Sepharose chromatography followed by an affinity chromatography on a concanavalin A-Sepharose column. The compound proved to be a mistletoe lectin II with D-galactose and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine specificity. Matrix-assisted laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectroscopy showed it to have an average molecular mass of 62.7 kDa and to consist of two subunits of 30.6 kDa and 32.5 kDa. It was a basic protein with isoelectric points of 9.4 and 9.6 by capillary isoelectric focusing and was cytotoxic to Molt4 cell.

    Notes: Abstract. Background: Diffuse peritoneal tumor infiltration is well recognized on computed tomography (CT) and is usually associated with carcinomatosis. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the CT findings of peritoneal spread from primary gastrointestinal lymphomas. Methods: Abdominal CT scans in eight patients with peritoneal lymphomatosis were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were 12–75 years old (mean = 48 years); with six patients were male and two were female. Pathologic evidence of primary lymphoma was available by colonoscopic biopsy of the terminal ileum in seven cases and by gastroscopic biopsy of the stomach in one case. All patients had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We analyzed CT findings in view of presence or loculation of ascites, abnormal patterns of mesentery and omentum, presence of peritoneal enhancement, presence of low attenuation and location of lymph nodes, and primary gastrointestinal lymphoma. Results: Although ascites was present in all patients, there was no loculation. The involvement of mesentery was present in seven patients, and the stellate pattern was the common type (4/7). The involvement of omentum was present in seven patients, and the common type was omental cake (3/7). Peritoneal enhancement was present in six patients. Enlarged lymph nodes were present in six patients, mainly at the retroperitoneum and mesentery, and showed centrally low attenuation in half the patients. Conclusion: Patterns of tumor involvement of mesentery, omentum, and peritoneum seen in peritoneal lymphomatosis are indistinguishable from those seen in peritoneal carcinomatosis or tuberculous peritonitis. However, ascites without any loculation or septation and diffuse distribution of enlarged lymph nodes were helpful signs of peritoneal lymphomatosis.

    Notes: Abstract. A 32-year-old Chinese man with cystic lymphangioma of the transverse colon is described. He presented with a 1-year history of altered bowel habits. Double-contrast barium enema study demonstrated a submucosal lesion in the midportion of the transverse colon with intact mucosa. Computed tomography (CT) showed a round 3.0-cm submucosal cystic mass lesion. Colonoscopy revealed a smooth, soft polypoid mass on a broad base. He underwent segmental resection of the colon. Histologically, the lesion was characterized by cystic lymphangioma originating from the submucosa. The clinical features, radiology, appropriate treatment, and possible pathogenesis of colonic lymphangioma are discussed.

    Notes: A mass spectrometer beam system using a double focusing sector analyzer and an electron impact ion source has been developed for trace analysis. The molecular beam, formed through a focusing glass capillary array, serves as the gas inlet of the system. Closed cycle cryopumps and ion pumps are used to generate the high vacuum. System roughing is achieved using sorption pumps. Clean and oil free vacuum was obtained by nonmechanical pumping. System normal mode sensitivity is about 107 counts/s/Torr. System low pressure mode sensitivity can be three orders of magnitude higher when sample pressures are below 30 mTorr. A parts-per-billion range system detection capability was accomplished. Slow response time for adsorptive species measurements is a major drawback of the sample inlet system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ohmic contacts to heavily C-doped AlGaAs were made using PdGeTiPt that had specific contact resistances Rc, as low as 1.7×10−6 Ω cm2 when annealed at 600 °C. The less heavily doped samples annealed at temperatures between 350 and 500 °C were non-Ohmic, and Rc decreased with increasing annealing temperature between 500 and 600 °C. For the more heavily doped samples, Rc decreased with increasing annealing temperature. Rc increased for all samples at annealing temperatures above 600 °C. Rc rose quickly by 102 when the samples were reannealed at 300 °C for 20 h, but remained unchanged with further reannealing for up to 100 h. This behavior is consistent with partial compensation generated by the rapid out-diffusion of Ga at low annealing temperatures and the subsequent in-diffusion of Ge into the Ga vacancies left behind. The lower Rc obtained with the 600 °C anneal can be explained by an increased As out-diffusion and the subsequent in-diffusion of Ge into the As vacancies at the higher annealing temperatures. Interfacial reactions and elemental diffusion of the contacts investigated via transmission electron microscopy and elemental depth profiles obtained by Auger electron spectroscopy are also consistent with this mode. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We employed the retrograde neural tracing method using the pseudorabies virus bartha strain (PRV-Ba) to investigate the projection from accessory trigeminal nucleus (Acc5) or accessary facial nucleus (Acc7) to hypoglossal nucleus (HP). After injection of PRV-Ba into the bellies of the digastric muscle, the PRV-Ba containing neurones were observed in Acc5 of the cranial belly injected rats and Acc7 of caudal belly injected rats ipsilaterally, but not in HP. These results suggest that Acc5 and Acc7 may not project to HP and that movements of the digastric muscle are not related to cooperation with tongue movements during mastication.

    Notes: In the present study, we performed the retrograde tracing method using the neurotropic pseudorabies virus bartha strain (PRV-Ba) and immunohistochemistry against CGRP, to identify whether CGRP exists in the gastric monosynaptic vagal circuit between dorsal motor nucleus of vagus nerve (DMV) and nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS).At the results, PRV immunoreactive neurons were found in both DMV and NTS. However, CGRP-immunoreactive cells were present only in NTS, which contained no double-labeled neurons for PRV and CGRP.These results suggest that CGRP may not have a neuronal function in gastric vagal circuit of rat.

    Notes: Pericellular arborization is reported to be the self-regulating structure in sensory ganglia. Although the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) or substance P (SP) immunoreactive pericellular arborization appeared in the sensory ganglia, there was no available information that CGRP and SP colocalize in this structure. As the attempts to resolve the question described above, the present study was undertaken to identify the coexistence of CGRP and SP in pericellular arborizations of the goat nodose and trigeminal ganglia by double immunohistochemistry. As the results show, CGRP immunoreactivity was present in every pericellular arborization containing SP immunoreactivity in trigeminal ganglia, however, pericellular network containing CGRP or SP immunoreactivity was not present in nodose ganglia. Unexpectedly, a few small satellite elements were observed to contain intense CGRP and SP immunoreactivity at the periphery of CGRP and SP immunoreactive neurones in nodose ganglia. Therefore, these results suggest that CGRP and SP coexsit in pericellular arborizations, and that satellite cell as well as pericellular arborization may be involved in intraganglionic regulation of goat sensory ganglia.

    Notes: In the skull of the Korean native goat, the parietal region was classified into four types by the degree of the fusion of the bones, the os interparietale, the os parietale and the squama occipitalis of the os occipitale, and the structural variations of these fusions. The fusion appeared first in the sutura inter-parietoparietalis and that of the sutura sagittalis of both ossa parietalia was followed. There was no fusion between the os parietale and the squama occipitalis of the os occipitale. These results suggest that the os interparietale developed independently but fused to the os parietale after birth, and the os parietale were developed as paired bones in prenatal life and then fused together according to age.

    Impact of physical initialization on cloud forecasts (1995)

    Notes: Summary The impact of initial data on cloud forecasts by the Florida State University Global Spectral Model (FSUGSM) has been investigated. This work has shown that improving the information content of the initial data by physical initialization has a very strong, positive impact on cloud forecasts. Model spin-up of clouds is considerably reduced. There is an overall better representation of high, middle, low, and total clouds over the tropics and there is a discernible improvement in the prediction of clouds. A strong correlation between cloud shortwave forcing and longwave forcing has been noted in model forecasts with the physically initialized data. This result compares very well with observations from the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE).
