Notes: Abstract Although diversity within the HLA-DRB region is predominantly focused in the DRB1 gene, the second expressed DRB loci, DRB3, DRB4, and DRB5, also exhibit variation. Within DRB1 * 15 or DRB1 * 16 haplotypes, four new variants were identified: 1) two new DRB5 alleles, DRB5 * 0104 and DRB5 * 0204, 2) a haplotype carrying a DRB1 * 15 or * 16 allele without the usual accompanying DRB5 allele, and 3) a haplotype carrying a DRB5* 0101 allele without a DRB1 * 15 or * 16 allele. The evolutionary origins of these haplotypes were postulated based on their associations with the DRB6 pseudogene. Within HLA haplotypes which carry DRB3, a new DRB3 * 0205 allele and one unusual DRB3 association were identified. Finally, two new null DRB4 alleles are described: DRB4 * 0201N, which exhibits a deletion in the second exon, and a second allele, DRB4 * null, which lacks the second exon completely. Gene conversion-like events and variation in the number of functional genes through reciprocal recombination and inactivation contribute to the diversity observed in the second expressed HLA-DRB loci.

Notes: Abstract   N-Nitroso-N-(3-keto-1,2-butanediol)-3′-nitrotyramine (NO-NTA) is a product of a model browning system in the presence of sodium nitrite. In this study, the chemical structure is confirmed by spectral studies, including UV, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy. NO-NTA is strongly genotoxic to the rat hepatocyte and is moderately cytotoxic to mouse C3H10T1/2 cells. Results obtained in this study indicate that NO-NTA inflicted DNA damage through the formation of a DNA adduct. In addition, C3H10T1/2 cells were treated with NO-NTA and, following addition of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) as promotor, the increase of transformed foci indicated that NO-NTA could possibly be an inhibitor of TPA tumor promotion. A transformed cell line from NO-NTA initiated and TPA promoted foci increased saturation density and growth ability in soft agar reactive to the control line. These results suggest that the formation of a genotoxic agent of nitroso-derivatives may take place in a nitrite-containing food system during processing and cooking.

Notes: Abstract Bilateral agenesis of the diaphragm is a rare, life-threatening malformation. Infants with this defect rarely survive to have surgical intervention. We report a 32-week premature female infant who was born to a 36-year-old mother via vaginal delivery. The pregnancy course was complicated by hypertension and polyhydramnios. Cytogenetic study showed a normal 46 XX female karyotype. She had cyanosis, respiratory distress and scaphoid abdomen at birth. A roentgenograph confirmed the diagnosis of diaphragmatic hernia. Surgery was performed at 21 h of age. Bilateral agenesis of diaphragm, herniation of abdominal organs and oesophagus and pulmonary hypoplasia were noted. Furthermore, stomach and spleen were adherent to the mediastinum and vertebrae. The patient developed hypotension and persistent hypoxaemia and expired at age of 26 h. Autopsy revealed bilateral agenesis of diaphragm, hypoplasia of lungs, and pancreas fibrosis with mild hypoplasia of islets of Langerhans. Conclusion Bilateral agenesis of diaphragm associated with pancreas fibrosis is a rare entity, and its clinical significance needs further investigation.

Notes: Crystals of a protein extracted from the seeds of Pachyrrhizus erosus have been obtained by vapor-phase diffusion. The crystal belongs to the space group P41212 or P43212 with cell parameters a = b = 62.52, c = 147.42 Å. There is one protein molecule of 33 kDa in an asymmetric unit. A data set at 3.1 Å has been collected on an area detector.

Notes: The Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) has observed gamma-rays bursts with the highest energy gamma-rays and the longest high energy emission to date. EGRET measures the high energy gamma-rays with its large NaI scintillator (1 to 200 MeV) and its spark chamber (30 MeV to 30 GeV). The spark chamber also measures time and arrival directions of individual photons allowing locations for the energetic bursts to be determined. Since the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory launch in 1991, EGRET has observed five bursts in the spark chamber with several having gamma-ray energies grater than 1 GeV. The recording breaking burst, GRB940217, had gamma-rays up to 18 GeV and lasted over 5000 seconds. The results for the energetic bursts are presented. The high energies observed from these gamma-ray bursts set constraints for the burst distances.

Notes: The photodissociation of CBrCl3 at 193 nm has been studied by translational spectroscopy. Two major dissociation channels, (1) CBrCl3→CCl3+Br and (2) CBrCl3→CBrCl2+Cl, are detected with product translational energies of 17 and 22 kcal/mol, respectively. The relative yield of (1):(2) is calculated to be 7:3. The primary product, CBrCl2, which is internally excited, undergoes unimolecular decay to form the CCl2+Br products. From the derived values of the anisotropy parameter β, we conclude that these processes take place rapidly after excitation via an A1←A1 transition, with the transition moment aligned parallel to the threefold axis. Results obtained for these two primary pathways and other minor processes are discussed in terms of a simple direct dissociation mechanism. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The outflow region of fast magnetic reconnection is studied by using a two-dimensional (2-D) resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. The effects of the guide magnetic field By on the 2-D quasi-steady reconnection are investigated. The one-dimensional (1-D) MHD Riemann problem associated with the magnetic reconnection is also simulated for comparison. In the 2-D reconnection a trailing reconnection layer is formed behind a leading bulge. In the cases with By=0, intermediate shocks, slow shocks, slow expansion waves, and a contact discontinuity may be present in the quasi-steady reconnection layer. In general cases with By≠0, the intermediate shocks are replaced by time-dependent intermediate shocks (TDISs). The structure of the reconnection layer as a function of the distance z from the X line in the 2-D reconnection is found to be related to the 1-D simulation results as a function of time t. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Concentrated solutions of nearly monodisperse polystyrene samples in cyclohexane in the theta condition and in the entanglement-free region have been studied by means of the depolarized photon-correlation spectroscopy and viscosity measurements. It is shown that the viscoelastic behavior of the studied systems is described by the Rouse theory and that in agreement with the theoretical analysis the main polymer dynamic process probed by the depolarized Rayleigh scattering is basically the reorientational motion associated with a Rouse segment of the polymer chain, whose relaxation is independent of the scattering angle and the molecular weight. In addition to the main dynamic process, the tail region of a very fast process associated with the sub-Rouse-segmental motions can be observed, whose existence is expected from the theoretical analysis. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Highly (100) oriented Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 (PZT) films were prepared on Si substrates with ultrathin SiO2 buffer layer by pulsed laser deposition. Hysteresis measurements show that saturation polarization, remnant polarization and coercive field of the films reach 26 μC/cm2, 10 μC/cm2 and 70 kV/cm, respectively. The thickness of SiO2 buffer layer is found to play a significant role on phase purity and orientation of PZT as well as the prevention of interdiffusion. It is also found that the grain size and the interdiffusion between PZT and Si are the key factors for the ferroelectric properties of the films, which are discussed together with the synthesis condition in detail. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
