Notes: Abstract Cachexia frequently occurs in the late stages of cancer, and is difficult to manage. We previously reported that interleukin-6 (IL-6) cDNA transfection into Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC-IL6) induced cachexia-like symptoms in C57BL/6 mice. This was thought to be a useful experimental model of cancer cachexia. We have examined the effects of two eicosanoids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), in order to evaluate whether they could relieve cachexia. LLC-IL6-bearing animals were divided into three treatment groups receiving DHA, EPA or water as the control; 80-μl samples of these compounds (purity〉95%) were administered orally by catheter daily starting 7 days after tumor transplantation. Tumor growth curves were similar in the three groups. There were no differences in water or food intake in the three groups. However, body weight, a marker of cachexia, was significantly higher in treated mice than in the control group. Sixteen days after tumor transplantation, the mean body weight was 17.45 g (P〈0.05), 17.2 g and 16.41 g in the groups receiving DHA, EPA and water respectively. The eicosanoids did not affect serum levels of IL-6. Ubiquitination of muscle protein, a marker of proteolysis coupled to cachexia, was compared in LLC-IL6-and LLC-transplanted mice. The eicosanoids prevented the ubiquitination of approximately 180 kDa protein. These results suggest that eicosanoids may prevent the cachexia mediated by IL-6.

Notes: Abstract The amount and distribution of additive species in zinc alloy particles containing 0.025wt% bismuth modified with 0.10wt% indium for mercury-free alkaline manganese batteries were examined after storage at various discharging levels at 60°C. The amount of hydrogen gas evolution due to the self-discharging reactions of zinc and the internal cell impedance were also evaluated. The amount of additive species in the zinc alloy particles was found to increase with increasing depth of discharge. Indium was homogeneously distributed on the surface even after partial discharge and also after storage for 1200h at 60°C. This behaviour is considered to contribute to the suppression of hydrogen gas evolution and increase in the internal cell impedance to the same level as when mercury is employed. As a result, mercury-free alkaline manganese batteries showed the same storage characteristics as conventional batteries containing mercury.

Notes: Abstract Polypyrrole was chemically synthesized using various oxidizing reagents and examined as a positive electrode material. Physical properties, morphologies and electrochemical characteristics of polypyrrole were greatly influenced by the oxidizing reagent used for polymerization. In general, polypyrrole with a smaller particle size and a larger specific surface area showed better discharge performance than that with a larger particle size and a smaller specific surface area. Polypyrrole was also synthesized on various conducting and nonconducting substrates using Fe(C104)3 as an oxidizing reagent. By using PP nonwoven fabric as a substrate material, a high discharge capacity of 72 mA h g−1 was obtained. Polypyrrole synthesized on only one side of PP nonwoven fabric was able to be used as an electrode.

Notes: Abstract Highly oriented thin films exhibiting transparent conduction aluminium-doped ZnO (AZO), were prepared by a spin-coating method. The effects of the solvents on the preparation and electrical properties of the thin films were examined. The thin films were formed on quartz glass substrates by spin-coating into a selected solution and calcining at 700 °C for 5 h. The thin films had a resistivity of ρ (Ω cm)=1.5 after heat treatment in an air atmosphere, and 1.5 × 10−3 Ω cm in a reducing atmosphere, and a transmission of about 85% in the visible light region. The differences in the high orientation and the conductivities were attributed to a chelate formation in the aluminium-doped ZnO due to the solvent effect.
