    Notes: Abstract Changes in phenytoin concentrations caused by switching valproate formulations with different absorption rates were retrospectively investigated in eleven epileptic patients receiving treatment with both drugs. Total plasma phenytoin concentrations were measured before and after a standard tablet of valproate was replaced by the same dose as a slow-release tablet. The mean plasma phenytoin level rose significantly from 14.4 to 18.7 μg·ml−1. Nine of eleven patients had markedly increased phenytoin levels (by 21 to 72%), and two developed toxic symptoms. The results indicate that changing valproate formulations can cause major alterations in the plasma concentration of co-administered phenytoin.

    Notes: A two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of an axial magnetic compression on a field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasma is carried out for the parameter range of a corresponding experiment conducted on the FRC Injection Experiment (FIX) [S. Okada et al., 17th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference 1998 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna) (in press)]. The simulation results show that during the initial stage of the magnetic compression the front part of the FRC plasma is mainly compressed radially, and that after this stage, the compression is primarily axial. Of particular interest is expected that the closed magnetic flux surfaces of the FRC can be retained without any degradation during the magnetic compression process. Further, it is observed in the simulation that the axial magnetic compression enables a transition of the MHD equilibrium from a long and thin to a short and fat FRC. The effects of this magnetic compression on FRC plasmas are discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Plasma parameters, particle end loss flux, flow velocity, and pressure are measured using a radial array of magnetic probes and directional electrostatic probes, in order to investigate particle loss processes in the edge layer of a field-reversed configuration (FRC). A plasma flow toward the end region is detected outside the separatrix between the axial midplane and the end region. The exhaust flow is also found in the end region. These results imply that particles are lost radially across the separatrix and then axially to the end. Measured flow velocity in the end region agrees within an error of 20% with the fluid-theory prediction, in which isentropy and axial momentum balance along magnetic flux tubes are assumed. The existence of the sonic condition in the end region is also suggested, analogous to ordinary fluid flow in a nozzle. The magnetic flux embedded in the edge layer of the confinement region and in the end region agrees within an error of 30%. These results indicate the applicability of the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) theory for particle end loss. The end loss time along the open field agrees with the MHD prediction within an error of 20%. The measured particle loss flux from the end region is explained by the MHD theory within an error of 20%. The plasma outside the separatrix is considered to behave as hydrodynamic flow through the magnetic loss channel, contrary to the previous work [L. C. Steinhaur, Phys. Fluids 29, 3379 (1986)]. It seems that the magnetic mirror field improves the particle confinement in the edge plasma of the FRC and thus assist the FRC confinement as previously predicted [Slough et al., Nucl. Fusion 24, 1537 (1984)]. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The new ion energy analyzer is developed to measure the energy distribution function f(E(parallel),E⊥) of ions lost along the confinement magnetic field [M. Okubo et al., J. Plasma Fusion Res. 70, 1102 (1994)]. The end-loss ions have larger E⊥ components compared with their E(parallel) components in the magnetic mirror throat. In this case, the ion energy distribution function is distorted because of the incident angle dependency of the retarding grid transmission. We try to compensate a measured energy distribution function by calculated grid transmission functions. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Pulse operation of electron cyclotron resonance plasma was performed for the fabrication of diamond films by chemical vapor deposition. With square wave amplitude modulation of microwaves at 500 Hz in frequency, the growth rate became twice as large as one of continuous operation with the same microwave power.     Notes: Most of the SPring-8 insertion devices are in-vacuum undulators except for the soft X-ray devices and one elliptical wiggler. The standard-type SPring-8 in-vacuum undulator has a period of 32 mm and a minimum gap of 8 mm. The fundamental radiation energy ranges from 5.2 to 18.5 keV. Three standard in-vacuum undulators are already installed in the ring and are operating without any problems. The magnetic field correction, the vacuum system and the commissioning of the in-vacuum undulators are described in this paper.

    Notes: Abstract Triacetyl-β-cyclodextrin (TA-β-CyD), a hydrophobic cyclodextrin derivative, that is insoluble in water, was used to form a complex with flufenamic acid (FA). FA-TA-β-CyD complex formation was demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry and powder X-ray diffractometry. The release rate of FA from the FA-TA-β-CyD complexes in phosphate buffer pH 6.8 was significantly retarded compared to that of FA from the FA and glucose mixture. When the FA-TA-β-CyD complexes were administered directly into the intraduodenal lumen, the plasma concentration of FA remained at a plateau level (10-18 μg/ml) for 6–8 h. An increased mean residence time of FA following FA-TA-β-CyD complexes administration was observed. These results indicate that TA-β-CyD may serve as a hydrophobic carrier in prolonged-release preparations of FA.

    Notes: Abstract Although pancreatic cancer (PC) continues to be a formidable disease, numerous treatment strategies are evolving and it is hoped that these will result in improved patient survival. Only surgical resection offers the opportunity for cure, but the prognosis of resected patients remains unfavorable because of postoperative recurrence. Accordingly, to improve the survival of PC patients, it is essential to develop effective non-surgical treatments for this disease. Radiotherapy (RT) alone does not have a significant clinical impact in PC, but when combined with chemotherapy (CHT), it provides a survival benefit in both locally unresectable and adjuvant settings of PC. However, to establish optimal methods of combining RT with CHT, newer approaches, such as specialized RT techniques and new CHT agents, are actively being pursued. CHT for PC has only limited value in clinical practice, because of the lack of any agent with a truly high level of activity. The identification of more effective new agents is therefore a high priority, and the enrollment of PC patients with metastatic disease into well designed clinical trials is essential. The novel nucleoside analog, gemcitabine, appears to have the potential to produce better results than those achieved over the last 35 years with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Moreover, increased understanding of the biology of PC should facilitate the development of entirely novel treatment options. We must continue to actively search for more effective non-surgical treatments for PC.
