Notes: Structural properties of Si0.7Ge0.3 alloy films grown on Si(001) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy have been characterized by means of several available techniques. Different types of buffer layers were predeposited on a clean Si(001) substrate in order to relax the lattice mismatch between the topmost Si0.7Ge0.3 alloy layer and Si substrate. The effect of buffer layers on the structural quality of the overgrown Si0.7Ge0.3 was investigated by x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and cross-sectional transmission electron microscope. It is confirmed that the threading dislocation density in the alloy layer drastically decreases by using buffer layers. The samples with step buffer layers relax the strain by introducing the dislocations at the interfaces, part of which goes through the alloy layer. On the other hand, the samples with superlattice buffer layers relax the strain by introducing the dislocations in the buffer layers which terminate at the interface of the superlattice buffer layer and the topmost alloy layer. The residual strain in the alloy layers on buffer layers grown at 550 °C is relaxed upon the annealing at 700 °C, or the growth at 700 °C. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background Allergen avoidance is recommended when treating atopic asthma. Objectives Soft toys are often kept in close proximity to children and may serve as a source of exposure. Due to the potential danger from the mite allergen content of these toys, Der 1 from toys was measured. Methods We quantified the level of Der I (Der p 1 + Der f 1) in both 30 new and 174 old soft toys (weight 216 ± 2.5g, height 26.5 ± 3.4cm), as well as in washed and in vacuumed soft toys. Dust was collected using an electrie vacuum cleaner. Der 1 was measured by monoclonal antibody-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (MoAb-ELISA).Results In brand new toys Der 1 was 0. I μg/g of dust, and in toys used for 1 year, 9.0; 2 year, 22.2; 3 year, 18.9; and more than 4 year, 22.7μg/g or dust. Der 1 in new toys was measured every 4 months for 1 year. Der I rapidly increased 10- to 20-fold in the first 4 months, but there was no clear seasonal change. In toys washed using a chemical detergent or cleaned using a vacuum cleaner, there was a stastistically significant (P〈0.00I) decrease in Der I in the washed group, but not in the vacuumed group. Conclusion These results confirm that mite allergens accumulate rapidly in toys to form a potentially important source of allergens and that washing toys with a chemical detergent is eflective in the reduction of allergens.

Notes: 9α,11β-Prostaglandin (PG) F2 is an initial metabolite of PGD2 which has a potent bronchoconstrictive activity.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉ObjectivesWe measured the urinary levels of 9α,11β-PGF2 in asthmatic children to investigate its role in not only acute asthmatic attack in a time course study but also in exercise-induced asthma (EIA).〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉MethodsIn the acute asthma study, 30 asthmatic children were examined. Urine samples were collected on the first, third, and sixth days. Urinary levels of 9α,11β-PGF2 were measured with gas chromatography mass spectrometry using the electron impact method. In the exercise challenge study, 14 children with EIA and 14 children without EIA were studied. Urine samples were collected before exercise challenge, and at 1 h, and 5 h after exercise challenge. Urinary levels of 9α,11β-PGF2 were measured.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉ResultsElevated urinary levels of 9α,11β-PGF2, which were observed on the first day when treatment was started in the hospital, were gradually decreased on the third day (P 〈 0.05), and on the sixth day (P 〈 0.01). A significant correlation between urinary levels of 9α,11β-PGF2 and symptom scores (P 〈 0.005) was observed on the first day. In EIA, there was a significant increase in urinary levels of 9α,11β-PGF2 at 1 h (P 〈 0.01) and at 5 h (P 〈 0.01) after exercise challenge, but not in the children without EIA.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion9α,11β-PGF2 may be involved in the pathogenesis of acute and exercise-induced asthma in children.

Notes: Abstract We examined changes in the blood flow rate in the course of jejunal ischemic injury using a laser Doppler flowmeter. For this purpose, we designed a sensor holding system, which involved the fixation of the sensor to the jejunum and allowed their movements to be synthronized. When the jejunum was reperfused after 10 min of ischemia, the blood flow rate markedly increased and then gradually decreased to the initial level. A 30-min period of ischemia produced the slowest recovery of the blood flow rate. This system could be useful for monitoring the blood flow rate in different anatomical regions.

Notes: Summary A newly synthesized antidiabetic agent, JTT-501 is an isoxazolidinedione rather than a thiazolidinedione. An oral dose of JTT-501 (100 mg · kg–1· day–1) given to 12-week-old male Zucker fatty rats for 7 days led to the amelioration of both hyperinsulinaemia (40 % of non-treated) and hypertriglyceridaemia (23 % of non-treated) as well as a 2.4-fold increased insulin sensitivity as determined by a euglycaemic insulin clamp. In our study, we further evaluated the acute effect of JTT-501 on both the glucose infusion rates (GIR) and insulin signalling in skeletal muscle. Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats aged 10 weeks were injected intravenously with JTT-501 (5 mg/kg) and then a euglycaemic insulin clamp was initiated and glucose infusion rates monitored for 150 min. We found that this treatment increased the glucose infusion rate by 33 % during the last 30 min in SD rats. After the clamp had been initiated for 30 min, the insulin-stimulated phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-kinase) activities co-immunoprecipitated with insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1) were also enhanced, resulting in increased glycogen synthase activities in the soleus muscles. Treatment with JTT-501 also enhanced the phosphorylation of insulin receptors and insulin receptor-substrate 1 rapidly as well as the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase activities, which were stimulated by a bolus injection of insulin. Similarly, JTT-501 stimulated the glucose infusion rate by 30 % and enhanced insulin signalling in Zucker fatty rats. In conclusion, a newly developed isoxazolidinedione, JTT-501, rapidly potentiates the insulin sensitivity of skeletal muscle by enhancing insulin signalling and could be useful for the treatment of insulin-resistant diabetic subjects. Notes: Abstract A combination of a rotating dilution refrigerator and high-Q torsional oscillator technique has been used to study dynamics of vortices in thin 4 He films adsorbed on the porous glass (d=1μm pore size). Under rotation an additional dissipation peak with the amplitude proportional to the angular velocity is seen at the middle of the superfluid transition, on the low temperature side of the stationary peak which is present even at Ω=0. We attribute this peak to the 3D Type vortices created in multiply connected 4 He film by the rotation. Peak shape of the rotation-induced dissipation could be interpreted as a freezing of the 3D vortices well below T c

Notes: Round-robin studies on relative sensitivity factors (RSFs) in secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) were conducted using bulk GaAs samples uniformly doped with various impurity elements. A total of 31 laboratories participated in two round-robins. More than 30 sets of relative ion intensities were obtained for B, Si, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, In and Te in GaAs. The RSFs for both positive and negative ions were derived for several types of SIMS instruments. The effect of primary ion incident angle was examined using quadrupole-based instruments and found to be the determining factor of the instrumental dependence of RSF. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
