Notes: Abstract Tracheobronchial endoluminal reconstruction and stenting has become a valuable palliative tool in adults with intrathoracic tumors compromising the airways. Tracheobronchial balloon dilatation has been recently used in children and even neonates. We report a case of severe airway obstruction requiring emergency intubation and artificial ventilation in a 5-year-old child with intrathoracic recurrence of a rhabdomyosarcoma. Endoscopic balloon dilatation through the endotracheal tube with subsequent implantation of a non selfexpanding metal mesh stent was used successfully, allowing extubation and discharge of the child from ICU.

Notes: Abstract Six new strains of Alcaligenes enriched for and isolated as nickel-resistant bacteria resemble Alcaligenes eutrophus H16 and contain both an NAD-reducing, tetrameric soluble hydrogenase and a membrane-bound hydrogenase. None of the soluble hydrogenases share with the Rhodococcus opacus MR11 enzyme tetramer the property of being cleaved easily into two dimeric moieties [a hydrogenase (βδ) and an NADH:acceptor oxidoreductase (αγ)], in the absence of nickel or at low ionic strength. The soluble hydrogenase of the newly isolated strain MR22 of R. opacus equalled that of strain MR11. The absence of a membrane-bound hydrogenase in Alcaligenes denitrificans strain 4a-2 and in Alcaligenes ruhlandii was confirmed.

Notes: Abstract A Gram-negative bacterial strain, identified as Acidovorax facilis strain 72W, has been isolated from soil by enrichment using 2-ethylsuccinonitrile as the sole nitrogen source. This strain grows on a variety of aliphatic mono- and dinitriles. Experiments using various heating regimes indicate that nitrile hydratase, amidase and nitrilase activities are present. The nitrilase is efficient at hydrolyzing aliphatic dinitriles to cyanoacid intermediates. It has a strong bias for C3–C6 dinitriles over mononitriles of the same chain length. Whole, resting cell hydrolysis of 2-methylglutaronitrile results in 4-cyanopentanoic acid and 2-methylglutaric acid as the major products. Heating, at least 20 min at 50 °C, eliminates nitrile hydratase and amidase activities, resulting in greater than 97% selectivity to 4-cyanopentanoic acid. The nitrilase activity has good heat stability, showing a half-life of 22.7 h at 50 °C and a temperature optimum of at least 65 °C for activity. The strain has been deposited as ATCC 55746.

Notes: The efficiency of the WasaOuro® system, based on an extract derived from Cruciferiae plants, was investigated as an insect suppressing agent. The active ingredient was allyl isothiocyanate (AIT). Lasioderma serricorne and Tribolium confusum were exposed to AIT vapor in vented containers. The containers were maintained in a temperature- and humidity-controlled room. The WasaOuro system does not repel or attract L. serricorne but does reduce tunneling activity of T. confusum. AIT disrupts normal reproductive cycles of both L. serricorne and T. confusum resulting in an insect population reduction in grain foods.

Notes: Hydrogen concentration was determined in batch and chemostat cultures of Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum, both in the headspace and in the medium using mass spectrometry. The calculated dissolved hydrogen concentration in the medium as derived from the headspace hydrogen concentration when equilibrium conditions between gas and liquid phase were assumed, was ten times higher than the experimentally determined hydrogen concentration. Variation of the partial pressure of hydrogen resulted in different values for substrate affinity for hydrogen (Ks) and yield (Y) of the cells. Upon hydrogen limitation, Ks decreased while the yield coefficient for hydrogen increased, indicating a change in the affinity of the cells towards hydrogen.

Notes: Abstract We study controllability properties of the control-affine system whose uncontrolled part coincides with a universal unfolding of a Takens-Bogdanov singularity. The main result is that the qualitative behavior of the control system can be different from the behavior of all systems with constant control functions in the following sense. There are parameter regions and control ranges such that for constant controls there is no homoclinic orbit, while there exists a “controlled homoclinic” orbit corresponding to a nonconstant control function.

Notes: Summary Because of advances in medical treatment and surgical management the number of adolescent females with congenital heart disease increased significantly during the last decade. On the other hand, the incidence of rheumatic heart disease, which accounted for the largest number of pregnant women with heart disease in the past, has declined over the years. Pregnancy is associated with a lot of physiological adjustments, such as changes in blood volume, stroke volume and cardiac output and may result in deleterious clinical effects in patients with congenital heart disease. Although a good outcome for these woman can often be expected, congenital heart disease still represents a high-risk pregnancy for both mother and infant. The actual risk depends on the type of malformation and functional impairment of the mother. To accompany these women safely through pregnency, good cooperation between pediatric and adult cardiologists, obstetrician and other physicians is necessary.
