Notes: Expressions are derived for the nuclear quadrupole splittings in the E3 and E4 (para–para) states of (NH3)2 and it is shown that these can be matched with the standard expressions for rigid rotors with two identical quadrupolar nuclei. The matching is exact only when the off-diagonal Coriolis coupling is neglected. However, the selection rules for rotational transitions are just opposite to those for the rigid rotor. Hyperfine splittings are measured for the J=2←1 transitions in the E3 and E4 states with ||K||=1; the quadrupole coupling constants χaa=0.1509(83) MHz and χbb−χcc=2.8365(83) MHz are extracted from these measurements by the use of the above mentioned correspondence with the rigid rotor expressions. The corresponding results are also calculated, with and without the Coriolis coupling, from the six-dimensional vibration–rotation–tunneling (VRT) wave functions of (NH3)2, which were previously obtained by Olthof et al. [E.H.T. Olthof, A. van der Avoird, and P.E.S. Wormer, J. Chem. Phys. 101, 8430 (1994)]. From the comparison of χaa with the measured value it follows that the semiempirical potential and the resulting VRT states of Olthof et al. are very accurate along the interchange (cursive-thetaA,cursive-thetaB) coordinate. From χbb−χcc it follows that this potential is probably too soft in the dihedral angle γ¯=γA−γB, which causes the torsional amplitude to be larger than derived from the experiment. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Objective: To analyze work of breathing (WOB) imposed by the respirators EVITA-2, EVITA-4 (Drägerwerk, Lübeck, Germany) and SV 300 (Siemens-Elema, Sweden) as well as inspiratory flow response and expiratory flow resistance during continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Design: Five study conditions on a lung model (CPAP at 0, 5, and 10 mbar, CPAP 5 mbar plus pressure support 2 mbar with both EVITA models, and CPAP 5 mbar with decreasing levels of flow and pressure trigger sensitivity with the SV 300) and three randomized study conditions in nine patients recovering from open heart surgery (condition A: EVITA-2, CPAP 5 mbar; condition B: SV 300, CPAP 5 mbar, flow trigger; condition C: SV 300, pressure trigger − 4 mbar). Setting: University hospital intensive care unit and laboratory of pulmonary physiology. Measurements and results: At each study condition we measured WOB, pressure–time product (PTP), WOB and PTP imposed (WOBimposed and PTPimposed), tidal volume, minute ventilation, respiratory rate, inspiratory trigger time, trigger pressure, trigger PTP, duration of inspiration, mean and peak inspiratory flow, and the delay from the onset of inspiration to peak inspiratory flow. Since the SV 300 automatically generates an additional pressure support of 2 cm H2O PTP, WOB, WOBimposed, and PTPimposed were higher with the EVITA-2 and EVITA-4 regardless of the trigger sensitivity set on the SV 300. The difference was neutralized with both types of EVITA ventilator by adding 2 mbar of pressure support during CPAP in order to achieve comparable conditions. Inspiratory flow response was faster with both EVITA models, expiratory flow resistance was higher with the SV 300. Decrements of trigger sensitivity with the SV 300 accelerated the flow response. Conclusions: Under similar conditions, no difference in WOBimposed was observed, although inspiratory flow response and expiratory flow resistance differed substantially between the three ventilators tested. Trigger sensitivity plays a minor role in determining PTP and WOB but has major influence on flow.

Notes: Abstract. The paper describes experimental investigations in a shock tube concerning the formation of new molecules using He as a driver gas and a mixture of Kr, CH $_4$ and NH $_3$ as driven gas, where Kr serves as diluant. By microwave absorption technique it was possible to detect HCN, CH $_2$ O and CH $_3$ NH $_2$ as reaction products. Obviously, these molecules were formed in the plasma behind the shock wave. In addition, the “swan bands” of C $_2$ have been observed with optical methods.

Notes: Abstract A new system for the growth of mammalian cells was developed and its biotechnological suitability was proven by the sterile cultivation of the phototrophic micro-alga Scenedesmus communis, as an easy to cultivate model organism. For this purpose, the bioreactor was combined with a newly developed equipment for irradiation of large scale cultures of phototrophic micro-organisms. Cultivation was performed in a 40 liter scale at 25°C and a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. The aeration gas consisted of 2% or 7% of CO2 in N2. The aeration rate was Vgas = 19.6 L.h-1, the stirring speed was n = 70 or 56 min-1. The new reactor consists of 8 totally immersed fluorescent tubes located around a cylinder for bubble free aeration which is moving within the cultivation broth. Results of the cultivation reveal the suitability of this newly designed system for biotechnological use and its high scale-up potential.

Notes: Abstract Uterine atrophy is a conspicuous finding in Nya:NYLAR female mice chronically infected withToxoplasma gondii. Administration of 17B-estradiol to infected mice induced a vigorous uterotropic response, i.e., an increase in uterine weight, in endometrial hypertrophy and proliferation, and in the activity of three estrogen-regulated uterine enzymes. These findings rule out a parasite-induced refractoriness of the uterus to estrogen and point to ovarian dysfunction (hypogonadism) as the immediate cause of the uterine atrophy.

Notes: Abstract Ovarian dysfunction develops in Nya:NYLAR mice chronically infected withToxoplasma gondii. To differentiate between primary ovarian failure and pituitary gonadotropin insufficiency, we (a) monitored ovarian responsiveness to pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and (b) assessed endogenous pituitary gonadotropin capacity by the degree of ovarian compensatory hypertrophy (OCH) developing after unilateral ovariectomy (ULO). PMSG stimulated vigorous folliculogenesis and estrogen synthesis, but not ovulation. HCG given 3 days after PMSG induced “superovulation” within 16 h. These observations indicate the absence of the critical preovulatory surge of endogenous luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary. In addition, ULO did not result in compensatory hypertrophy of the contralateral ovary, an indication of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) insufficiency. We hypothesize that cytokines released peripherally in response to the parasite reached the hypothalamus and initiated a sequence of events that inhibited the pulsatile release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), leading to the subsequent impairment of the pituitary-ovarian axis.
