Notes: Optical nonlinearities in strained-layer InGaAs/GaAs multiple quantum wells (MQWs) are studied using pump-probe spectroscopy. It is found that the carrier density required for absorption saturation in a strained InGaAs/GaAs MQW is about a factor of two lower than that in an unstrained GaAs/AlGaAs MQW with similar structures, while the nonlinear index change per carrier is about the same for both samples. The decrease in the saturation density in the strained MQW is explained by the increase of the top valence-band curvature caused by the compressive strain in the quantum well.

Notes: A new version of DIRECT*SEARCHER (DIRECT-SEARCHER automatic system) for personal computers (PC) consisting of several crystallographic programs has been developed for automatic structure analysis of organic compounds as an innovation of the DS*SYSTEM [Koyama & Okada (1975). Acta Cryst. A31, S18]. Each program is improved and rewritten in Fortran77 for the 32 bit PC. The PC version of DS*SYSTEM is used by organic chemists rather than professional crystallographers.

Notes: Abstract A naturally occurring member of ubiquinone (Q) group, a dihydroubiquinone-9 (Q-9 (H2)), has been isolated as a minor ubiquinone component from the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans. By ultraviolet absorption, mass and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometric studies, the structure of Q-9 (H2) was found to be 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-IX-dihydromultiprenyl9-1,4-benzoquinone (I).

Notes: This paper discusses requirements to be satisfied by future manufacturing systems and proposes a new concept of modular manufacturing to integrate intelligent and complex machines. In large-scale systems such as manufacturing systems, modularization is indispensable for clarifying logical structure and assuring a high degree of ease of construction. The parts, products and manufacturing equipments as well as the design and operating activities themselves are all described in units called modules. A manufacturing system is constructed and operated by combining these in building-block style. The creation of this manufacturing system relies on construction and operating systems that enable design and simulation in the virtual world, and production and control in the real world, in a unified approach. Hardware modules and software modules are compiled flexibly and hierarchically to fulfil specified tasks. A system in which modular manufacturing as a concept of system integration is applied to manufacturing robots is called a modular robot system. The robots are embedded in manufacturing systems as the highest application of model-based robotics.

Notes: Summary The genetic polymorphism of human interalpha-trypsin inhibitor (ITI) has been investigated in sialidase-treated samples by isoelectric focusing on polyarcrylamide gels with a pH range 3.5–9.5 followed by passive blotting with enzyme immunoassay. In 400 blood donors from western Japan, 8 simplified band patterns were observed, 6 of which could be explained by the previously described 3 polymorphic alleles, ITI*1, ITI*2, and ITI*3. The others were products of a new and rare fourth allele designated ITI*4, whose expression is also consistent with autosomal codominant inheritance. The frequency of these alleles was 0.440, 0.526, 0.030 and 0.004, respectively. The theoretical exclusion rate for putative fathers in paternity cases was calculated to be 0.228. The ITI system is a useful genetic marker for forensic hemogenetics in Japanese and in Europeans.

Notes: Summary The cytotoxic effect of cis-diamminedichloro-platinum II (cisplatin, CDDP) on spermatogenesis in BALB/C mice, and possible protection of the testes by leuprolide acetate (D-Leu-6 LHRH(1–9)-ethylamide, TAP-144, leuprolide), a synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue, were examined. Temporary interruption of the pituitary-gonadal axis by the analogue and amelioration of the gonadal toxicity of cisplatin by reducing the cell division rate in spermatogenesis were expected. The results showed cisplatin to have a cytotoxic effect on spermatogenic cells in BALB/C mice. The administration of leuprolide had no effect on testicular weight or histological findings in the mouse testes. Pretreatment and simultaneous administration of leuprolide did not reduce the damaging effect of cisplatin on the testes in mice. This is at variance with a previously published report.
