Notes: The development of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source for the heavy ion medical accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) injector is reported. The HIMAC is a heavy ion medical accelerator for cancer therapy. The electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source is expected to provide a long lifetime, easy operation, and easy maintenance for medical use. The NIRS-ECR ion source has a single closed ECR stage, and a microwave frequency of 10 GHz is applied. Under the present performance, the output electrical currents of the ions are 2500 eμA for He1+, 300 eμA for C2+, 480 eμA for Ne3+, and 110 eμA for Ar6+. Stability of the intensity is better than 2%. The transmission efficiency through a low-energy beam-transport line with an acceptance of 200 πmm mrad is more than 70%; the typical 50% and 90% emittances of the injection beam with 8 keV/u are 20 and 80 πmm mrad, respectively. These performances satisfy the requirements for radiotherapy.

Notes: We report the first case of metastatic clear cell sarcoma with dramatic response to DAV treatment (DTIC + ACNU + VCR). Clear cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses, or malignant melanoma of soft parts, is a rare tumour that occurs predominantly in the extremities of young adults. It tends to recur locally or metastasize and the prognosis is poor. Although the importance of surgery has been established, the role of adjuvant chemotherapy has yet to be determined. DAV should be considered as a first-line palliative treatment in disseminated disease as well as adjuvant therapy after surgery of primary clear cell sarcoma.

Notes: A 65-year-old Japanese woman presented with disseminated erythematous patches, plaques, and nodules on the trunk and limbs. Histological examination showed diffuse and dense infiltrates located in the dermis and subcutis, composed of large pleomorphic T lymphocytes. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells were positive for blastic T-cell markers, but negative for CD30 (Ki-1) antigen. Based on the clinicopathological findings, a diagnosis of primary cutaneous large T-cell lymphoma was made. Despite systemic chemotherapy, the patient died 7 months after diagnosis. Gene expression profiling using complementary DNA microarrays indicated significantly increased expression of an apoptosis-inhibitory protein and certain cyokines and cytokine receptors (e.g. MCP-1, MCP-2, IP-10, and IL-2Rγ) in the tumour-indurated skin. Comprehensive gene expression patterning in additional cases may provide useful information regarding the biological and clinical behaviour of aggressive cutaneous lymphomas such as CD30-negative large T-cell lymphoma.

Notes: A 31-year-old male presented with limpet-like, cone-shaped skin lesions on the scalp, the extremities, and the trunk of 4 months' duration, and had had severe joint pain in his right fingers, wrist, and knee for 1 month. Radiological examination revealed arthritis of the above mentioned multiple joints. Rheumatoid factor was serologically negative. Histopathological findings showed dense inflammatory cell infiltration and remarkable Munro's microabscesses in the horny layer in addition to psoriasiform epidermal hyperplasia, and predominant dermal oedema. Based on clinicopathological findings, a diagnosis of rupioid psoriasis with arthropathy was made. Following treatment for arthralgia using low doses of systemic steroid, the effects of cyclosporin combined with topical steroids was seen to alleviate dramatically the skin lesions and arthritis within 2 weeks. There was no recurrence of such skin and joint lesions during a follow-up period of 1 year.

Notes: A 50-year-old woman with von Recklinghausen’s disease, but not Carney’s complex, presented with a 1-year history of a hard subcutaneous mass on her right hip and right inguinal lymphadenopathy. Histological and immunohistochemical studies of the tumour revealed schwannian and melanocytic characteristics. Local recurrence without distant metastases was observed 5 years later. Although the diagnosis of malignant schwannoma with melanocytic differentiation, rather than neurotropic melanoma, was made for the primary tumour, based on the clinicohistopathological and ultrastructural findings, the overall clinical course in this case did not seem incompatible with malignant melanocytic schwannoma.

Notes: We have measured Raman spectra of a diamond film prepared on the (111) surface of cubic boron nitride(c-BN) by the dc plasma chemical vapor deposition method. The polarization property of the Raman line of diamond agrees well with that of LO phonon for the (111) surface of c-BN. The agreement between the polarization property of Raman lines of diamond and c-BN indicates a possibility of the heteroepitaxial growth of the diamond film on the (111) surface of c-BN. It is found that the diamond layers on c-BN are under tensile stress of 2.2×1011 dyn/cm2. The value of the corresponding tensile strain agrees well with the lattice mismatch calculated from the lattice constants of c-BN and diamond, supporting the possibility of the heteroepitaxial growth of the diamond film. Raman spectroscopy is a powerful technique not only to estimate the stress in the diamond film but also to determine the crystallographic orientation.

Notes: Diamond thin films have been grown epitaxially on high-pressure synthesized cubic boron nitride (c-BN) particles by using dc plasma chemical vapor deposition. At the early growth stage of the film on c-BN{111} surfaces, the island structure is observed and the number density of islands is about 1011 cm−2. The growth and the coalescence of islands are also found by scanning electron microscopy observation. The continuous film is obtained at the thickness of about 2000 A(ring) and the surface of the film is rather smooth. The Raman peak of the epitaxial diamond film shows the shift toward the lower wave number due to the tensile stress involved in the film.

Notes: Several evaluation methods for soybean chilling tolerance at the reproductive stage were examined under artificial climatic conditions. Comparisons were made on plants in control and treated plots using three cultivars differing in the level of chilling tolerance. In all methods, plants were grown at 22/17°C (day/night) until first flowering, and then transferred to growth chambers at 24/17°C for control and 15/15°C for chilling treatment, respectively. A method, in which plants were grown at 20/16°C after 4 weeks of the different temperature treatments, proved comparable to the conventional one, in which chilling tolerance at the flowering stage is evaluated using natural and artificial conditions. Another method, in which the plants in chilling treatment plots were grown at 15°C until maturity, also proved usable to evaluate genotypic differences in chilling tolerance independently of maturity time.

Notes: Effects of the resistant cultivars of melon on the powdery mildew fungus, Sphaerotheca fuliginea, were investigated in a melon-growing area of Japan. Powdery mildew fungi were isolated from four melon cultivars (‘HN21’, ‘Quincy’, ‘Earl's Knight Natsu 2’ and ‘Earl's Miyabi Natsu 2′) which are resistant to different races of S. fuliginea.‘HN21’is resistant to races 1 and N1,‘Quincy’ and ‘Earl's Knight Natsu 2’are resistant to races 1 and N2, and ‘Earl's Miyabi Natsu 2’is resistant to races 1, N1 and N2. All 155 strains isolated from ‘HN21’were identified as race N2. Seventy out of 81 strains isolated from ‘Quincy’ and ‘Earl's Knight Natsu 2’were identified as race N1, while other strains were identified as races 1, 2US, N2 and N3. Nineteen out of 29 strains isolated from ‘Earl's Miyabi Natsu 2’were identified as race N3, while other strains were identified as races 10, 2US, N1 and N4. These results suggest that, although the resistant cultivars are extremely effective for protecting the plants from their respective races, a race succession rapidly takes place, even in a small area, and other minor races become predominant.
