Notes: Abstract: The structure of component groups of Néron models has been investigated on several occasions. Here we admit non-separably closed residue fields and are interested in the subgroup of rational points or, in other terms, in the subgroup of geometrically connected components of a Néron model. We consider Néron models of abelian varieties and of algebraic tori and give detailed computations in the case of Jacobians of curves.

Notes: The extent of allelic diversity at the Merozoite Surface Protein-1 locus of Plasmodium falciparum (PfMSP-1) was examined in isolates collected from symptomatic patients living in a mesoendemic area in southern Vietnam. The variable blocks 2, 4 and 10 were typed by polymerase chain reaction and 24 PfMSP-1 gene types were defined as unique combinations of allelic types detected in each variable block. Nineteen PfMSP-1 gene types were identified and 182 parasite populations were fully typed among 102 isolates. Forty-eight (47%) patients harbored more than one typed parasite population, and one patient had at least eight genetically distinct subpopulations. As previously shown in the same endemic area, recombination between blocks 4 and 10 was significantly less frequent than expected from random assortment of allelic types. The distribution of PfMSP-1 gene types, however, did not differ significantly from that observed in isolates collected in the same area 17-24 mo before the present study. Furthermore, the prevalence of the most common gene types and the average number of different gene types harbored by the same host did not decrease with age. This argues against the prominence of frequency-dependent immune selection of PfMSP-1 polymorphisms in this parasite population.

Notes: Abstract Natural self-reinforced composite, bamboo, was surface modified by phosphorylation with urea–H3PO4 and NaOH–H3PO4 methods; then precalcification was performed by immersing samples in saturated Ca(OH)2 solution. After that, calcium phosphate can be formed on the surface of bamboo samples in calcification media: simulated body fluid (1.5 SBF) and accelerated calcification solution (ACS). Experimental results reveal that pre-calcification is an inevitable step for the formation of calcium phosphate. The calcium phosphate formed in 1.5 SBF was identified by thin-film X-ray diffraction as apatite which was not well crystallized. Compared with the urea–H3PO4 method, the NaOH–H3PO4 method has the advantages of quicker and continuous apatite formation and stronger adhesive between apatite and bamboo.

Notes: Abstract Let K be a discrete valuation field with ring of integers O K .Letf : X ! Y be a finite morphism of curves over K. In this article, we study some possible relationships between the models over O K of X and of Y. Three such relationships are listed below. Consider a Galois cover f : X ! Y of degree prime to the characteristic of the residue field, with branch locus B. We show that if Y has semi-stable reduction over K,thenX achieves semi-stable reduction over some explicit tame extension of K.B/.WhenK is strictly henselian, we determine the minimal extension L=K with the property that X L has semi-stable reduction. Let f : X ! Y be a finite morphism, with g.Y/ 〉 2. We show that if X has a stable model X over O K ,thenY has a stable model Y over O K , and the morphism f extends to a morphism X ! Y. ! Y. Finally, given any finite morphism f : X ! Y, is it possible to choose suitable regular models X and Y of X and Y over O K such that f extends to a finite morphism X ! Y ?As wasshown by Abhyankar, the answer is negative in general. We present counterexamples in rather general situ-ations, with f a cyclic cover of any order 〉 4. On the other hand, we prove, without any hypotheses on the residual characteristic, that this extension problem has a positive solution when f is cyclic of order 2 or 3.

Notes: Abstract The life cycle of the red alga Porphyra purpurea alternates between two morphologically distinct phases: a shell-boring, filamentous sporophyte and a free-living, foliose gametophyte. From a subtracted cDNA library enriched for sporophyte-specific sequences, we isolated a cDNA encoding an unusual elongation factor 1α (EF-1α) that is expressed only in the sporophyte. A second EF-1α gene that is expressed equally in the sporophyte and the gametophyte was isolated from a genomic library. These are the only EF-1α genes detectable in P. purpurea. The constitutively expressed gene encodes and EF-1α very similar to those of most eukaryotes. However, the sporophyte-specific EF-1α is one of the most divergent yet described, with nine insertions or deletions ranging in size from 1 to 26 amino acids. This is the first report of a developmental stage-specific EF-1α outside of the animal kingdom and suggests a fundamental role for EF-1α in the developmental process.
