Notes: Polycrystalline α-Al2O3 and yttria-stabilized ZrO2 substrates were coimplanted with 175-keV Mo+ and 74-keV S+ at doses of 1×1017 and 74-keV S+ and 2×1017 cm−2, respectively. An amorphous SiO2 substrate was coimplanted with 175-keV Mo+ and 74 keV S+ at doses of 4.97×1016 and 1.02×1017 cm−2, respectively. The energies of Mo+ and S+ ions were chosen to obtain a nearly overlapping depth profiles in all three substrates. Transmission electron microscopy, Rutherford backscattering, and Auger electron spectroscopy techniques were used to characterize the ion-implanted materials. The formation of MoS2 phase was observed in the as-implanted condition as well as after annealing at 700 °C in all substrates. Thermodynamic calculations were performed to predict the equilibrium binary phase formed in Al2O3, ZrO2, and SiO2 under the present implantation and annealing conditions. The predictions agree with the experimental findings.

Notes: Summary Radar observations of two pre-monsoon tornadoes as experienced over the Gangetic West Bengal and the integrated field intensity of atmospherics (IFIA) at 30 kHz recorded over the tropical station, Calcutta, have been analysed. The records of IFIA exhibit a pronounced variation in the noise level showing first a sudden enhancement and then a distinct fall which is repetative in nature in both the cases. The characteristics of the variations are analysed and discussed. The synoptic situations in connection with both the tornadoes have also been critically studied. The results obtained are explained by considering the existing knowledge of electrical activity.

Notes: Summary The circadian rhythm of rat liverβ-glucuronidase has been studied in animals kept under highly standardized laboratory condition. A clear 24 h rhythm has been observed for this enzyme with a peak activity at 01.00 h and a trough at 13.00 h.

Notes: Summary Let X t∶t≧0 be an ergodic stationary Markov process on a state space S. If  is its infinitesimal generator on L 2(S, dm), where m is the invariant probability measure, then it is shown that for all f in the range of $$\hat A,n^{ - {1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} \int\limits_0^{nt} {f(X_s ){\text{ }}ds{\text{ }}(t\underline{\underline 〉 } } 0)$$ converges in distribution to the Wiener measure with zero drift and variance parameter σ 2 =−2〈f, g〉=−2〈Âg, g〉 where g is some element in the domain of  such that Âg=f (Theorem 2.1). Positivity of σ 2 is proved for nonconstant f under fairly general conditions, and the range of  is shown to be dense in 1⊥. A functional law of the iterated logarithm is proved when the (2+δ)th moment of f in the range of  is finite for some δ〉0 (Theorem 2.7(a)). Under the additional condition of convergence in norm of the transition probability p(t, x, d y) to m(dy) as t → ∞, for each x, the above results hold when the process starts away from equilibrium (Theorems 2.6, 2.7 (b)). Applications to diffusions are discussed in some detail.

Notes: Summary The electrical effects due to monsoon clouds in conjunction with the VLF atmospherics data have been extensively analyzed. The cloud distribution and rainfall pattern during the SW monsoon period are examined. The diurnal curves of rainfall show that the maximum rain generally occurs in the afternoon hours between 13 to 18 IST. The coefficient of variation (CV) of monsoon rainfall plotted against rainfall amount reveals that CV decreases with increasing rainfall amounts upto about 40 inches. The differences in the mean dry bulb temperature as well as mean relative humidity values at the standard levels between strong and weak monsoon are studied. The monthly median of the hourly average together with the respective upper and lower decile values of atmospherics have been considered. Also, the frequency dependence of afternoon maximum (or late afternoon minimum) to morning minimum in the sferics level is taken into account to determine the seasonal variation. During monsoon months the sferics level with higher cloud amount (⩾4 okta) increases considerably but the width of the sferics is reduced. The results are interpreted by considering the activity of the sources involved at such times.

Notes: Summary The circadian rhythm of liver esterase activity has been studied in rats maintained under highly standardized laboratory condition. They were housed in specially constructed climate rooms and subjected to an artificial 12∶12 light-dark regimen. The total esterase was further differentiated to A esterase (E.C. 1.1.2) by using E 600 (Paraoxan), and a circadian rhythm for this enzyme also has been observed. During the lowest phase of total esterase activity, the higher phase for organophosphate-resistant esterase activity was observed.

Notes: Abstract The radiative lifetimes of three levels belonging to the 5d configuration of KrII have been measured. The high frequency deflection technique with a delayed coincidence single photon counting arrangement has been employed. The lifetimes of the 5d 2 F 5/2 and 5d 4 F 5/2 levels have been measured for the first time.
