Notes: Summary Plasma lipid-bound sialic acid (LSA) was assayed in normal volunteers, patients with non-malignant diseases, and a variety of cancer patients. Mean plasma LSA in 50 normal volunteers, 16 patients with non-malignant diseases, 54 breast cancer, 17 lung cancer, 15 colon cancer, 7 ovarian cancer, 5 prostate cancer, 4 leukemia, 4 gastrointestinal, 3 thyroid cancer, 3 pancreas cancer and 2 adrenal cancer patients were 17.7, 23.2, 58, 85, 56.7, 46.2, 56.7, 53.3, 31.1, 33.2 and 119.5 mg/dl, respectively. None of the normal volunteers had elevated plasma LSA values. Plasma LSA level was not significantly different in male and female volunteers. Two patients with rheumatic arthritis had LSA values slightly elevated over the mean + 2 SD for the normal volunteers. Two out of 114 different cancer patients had plasma LSA levels within normal range exhibiting 98.2% sensitivity of the assay. Plasma LSA, which is relatively simple to assay, may be used as a tumor marker in wide variety of neoplastic diseases.

Notes: Abstract The effects on spermatogenesis of a series of contiguous non-overlapping Y-chromosome deficiencies were examined using both the light and electron microscope. The deficiencies were constructed by combining elements of different X-Y translocations; they subdivide the Y into seven segments, six of which are required for male fertility (four in the long arm and two in the short arm). Spermatogensis was examined from the primary spermatocyte through to the formation of mature sperm and the earliest departures from normal development identified. Two deficiencies result in the absence of the same structure from the axoneme of the sperm tail-the dynein-containing outer arm extending from the A subtubule of the peripheral doublet; they also result in the absence from primary spermatocyte nuclei of aggregates of tubuli in one case and reticular material in the other. A third deficiency causes the appearance in the primary spermatocyte of the crystals characteristic of X0 males and the irregular distribution during meiosis of nuclear and cytoplasmic elements to the spermatids. The fourth deficiency results in the misalignment of the developing axoneme with the mitochondrial derivatives and is first detectable in the onion nebenkern stage of the spermatid. Finally for two deficiencies the first abnormalties detected were during later stages and comprise a syndrome found in most of the steriles. We attribute this phenotype to the indirect effects of earlier lesions.

Notes: A cross-section potential which models the interaction of two planar objects of prescribed shape is developed and used to model the interactions of amphiphiles in vertical phases of Langmuir monolayers. The results of Monte Carlo simulations of an isobaric–isothermal ensemble show qualitative agreement with experiment. The model system undergoes a continuous, bound-to-free rotator transition between phases of the same symmetries as the solid (S) and super liquid (LS) phases exhibited by fatty acid films.

Notes: Astaxanthin-rich oil extract from Louisiana crawfish by-product imparted a salmon-red coloration to the flesh and integument of rainbow trout on a diet containing 45 mg astaxanthin/kg feed. Carotenoids deposited in fish flesh were stable (ca 90% retention) in air-packed samples at 1 - 2°C. Oxygen-evacuated and CO2-enriched packaging gave adverse color stability. Lowest pigment levels were in frozen samples, with 53% of the absorbed pigment degraded in 14 days. Visual color scores were consistent with quantitative pigment analyses (r = 0.77). Higher pigment contents were observed in air-packed (1 - 2°C) samples, possibly due to astacene or other breakdown products of astaxanthin. Maximal TBA values were observed in air-packed (1 - 2°C) samples. The effect of tissue enzyme homogenate on fading of trout flesh is discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] The B-cell populations in BALB/c spleen (Figs 1, 2) are resolved into two subsets on the basis of the amount of IgM expressed. The predominant population (labelled I in the diagram), which has relatively little surface IgM, expresses intermediate to high levels of surface IgD and constitutes -60% ...

Notes: Summary Laser-induced intramyocardial revascularization (LIR) has been used to promote direct communications between blood within the ventricular cavity and that of the existing myocardial vasculature in an attempt to increase perfusion in patients with ischemic heart discase. This study was conducted to measure the effects of LIR channels on regional myocardial flood flow (microspheres), cardiac mechanics (sonomicrometers), and myocardial tissue pressures in 18 dogs. Under baseline hemodynamic conditions (mean HR=165.2±11.4 bpm, LVP=123.6±22.9/4.0±1.8 mmHg, AoP=112.8±27.1/77.0±22.5 mmHg), myocardial blood flow in laser-treated tissue (mean =1.11±.10 cc/min/gm before laser; .71±.19 cc/min/gm after laser) was reduced as compared to blood flow in control tissue (mean=1.12±.15 cc/min/gm before laser; 1.25±.22 cc/min/gm after laser). Regional myocardial systolic shortening (11.32%±3.82% before laser; 7.49%±2.86% after laser) was decreased by 33%. During simultaneous reversible ligation of the LAD and LCCA for 2 min, when intramyocardial channels represented the only tissue access for the injected microspheres, blood flow in laser-treated tissue was not increased above that of the control non-lasered tissue. However, regional blood flow was greater in laser-treated ischemic tissue (mean=.61±.12 cc/min/gm) than in untreated ischemic areas (mean=.04±.03 cc/min/gm) when left ventricular pressure (LVP) was acutely elevated (mean SLVP=207.0±16.1 mmHg). Using these measurements, a model is proposed to predict regional systolic pressure gradients between the left ventricular cavity and coronary intramyocardial vasculature required to permit restoration of blood flow to ischemic myocardium. We conclude that improved perfusion via laser-induced intramyocardial channels does not occur in otherwise normal myocardium exposed to acute coronary ligation and only small improvements in perfusion are noted when LVP is significantly elevated. Consideration of further clinical application of this approach is seriously cautioned awaiting additional experimental studies.

Notes: Abstract. A total of 23 women with stage II breast cancer receiving adjuvant cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil had detailed pharmacokinetic monitoring performed on the first and third courses of therapy. The area under the concentration time curve (AUC) of each of these three drugs varied by a factor of 3–4 among patients. No systematic change in pharmacokinetics between the first and third courses was seen for cyclophosphamide, methotrexate or 5-fluorouracil, and the mean AUC for each of the three drugs did not change. However, significant intrapatient variability in drug pharmacokinetics was observed for all three drugs such that the AUC, clearance and half-life in an individual on the third course could not be reliably predicted from data generated on the first course. On the basis of these results, cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil pharmacokinetic data from one treatment would not be useful information from which the doses for subsequent courses could be determined.

Notes: [Auszug] All IgM-bearing cells in the spleens of 2-week-old animals express BLA-1 (recognized by rat monoclonal antibody 53-10.1)6, whereas less than half of the IgM-bearing spleen cells in adults carry this antigen (Fig. 2). BLA-1 therefore appears to be absent from the late-developing more 'mature' ...
