Notes: The magnetic properties of the spheromak configuration produced by a combination of slow theta and Z discharges in the University of Maryland Spheromak experiment (MS) are reported. The magnetic structure of the plasma in MS has been mapped out by arrays of passive magnetic pickup coils. The Taylor relaxation process is observed during the formation phase. The magnetic profile evolves in such a way that the ratio of poloidal current Ip to poloidal flux ψ in the plasma approaches a constant value, where μ0Ip=kelψ. When the spheromak is formed, the magnetic field configuration is close to Taylor's minimum energy state, μ0j=kB. This constant k is related to the size of the spheromak produced. A spheromak with 1.0 T maximum field, corresponding to 650 kA poloidal current, has been produced in MS. However, due to the high plasma density (6–8×1020 m−3) and the presence of low-Z impurities (mainly carbon and oxygen), the plasma is radiation dominated with electron temperature ≤15 eV. The magnetic field decays exponentially during the decay phase. Axisymmetric equilibrium states that could exist in the configuration are calculated with a Grad–Shafranov equilibrium code. Comparison of the numerical calculation with the experimental measurements indicates that the magnetic-field structure stays close to the equilibrium state as the plasma decays.

Notes: The purpose of this investigation was to establish a standardized animal model to predict the photoallergenic potential of new chemical compounds. In a first series of experiments the main factors influencing the induction of photoallergenicity were evaluated (induction concentration, pH of the test solution, pretreatment of the irradiation site with sodium lauryl sulphate, additional use of adjuvant injections and routes of administration). Osram Ultravitalux lamps were utilized for these studies. In a second series of experiments a Xenon 6000 W radiation source was used. Positive results were obtained with well known photosensitizers, as, for instance, the halogenated salicylanilides, as well as with so-called weak photoallergens (e.g. bithionol, sulphanilamide) by stimulating the animals' immune system with Freund's complete adjuvant. The photoallergenic compounds were at the same time tested for their contact allergenic potential in the optimization test.A standard procedure for the predictive photoallergenicity assay in guinea-pigs is proposed.

Notes: Abstract We present results of the total cross section differenceΔσ Т obtained in transmission measurements at the energies 0.86, 0.88, 0.91 and 0.94 GeV. The SATURNE II polarized beam of free neutrons obtained from the break-up of polarized deuterons was transmitted through the polarized Saclay frozen-spin proton target. The beam and target polarizations were oriented in the vertical direction. The present results agree with previous SATURNE measurements and improve the amplitude analysis in the forward direction.

Notes: Abstract We present data of several rescattering observables measured inn p elastic scattering between 0.80 and 1.10 GeV. The SATURNE II polarized beam of free neutrons obtained from the break-up of polarized deuterons was scattered on the Saclay polarized frozen-spin proton target. Three different configurations of beam and target polarization directions were used: the observablesD onon andK onno were measured with the normal-normal spin configuration at eight energies;N onkk ,D os″ok andK os″ko were determined with the longitudinal-longitudinal configuration at six energies;N onsk ,D os″ok andK os″so with the sideway-longitudinal configuration at six energies. Part of the data was obtained with an unpolarized CH2 target where only the two spin-index polarization transfer parametersK os″ko andK os″so were determined. Data are compared with phase shift analyses predictions and with the LAMPF results at 0.788 GeV. Present results are the first measurements of rescattering observables above 0.80 GeV. They provide an important contribution to any future theoretical or phenomenological analysis.

Notes: Abstract Subchronic testing of laboratory animals in accordance with present regulatory guidelines involves maximum exposure with the chemical under investigation and serves for the evaluation of systemic toxicity as well as of lesions in organs and organ systems, including neurotoxicity. The primary assessment of neurotoxicity is essentially based on the overall observation of animal behaviour in the course of the customary toxicity studies and on the subsequent neuropathological evaluation with contemporary techniques. Under this maximum exposure the absence of symptoms and signs of neural abnormalities indicates that the material testd would be devoid of neurotoxicity. Any overt or suspicious symptoms for neurotoxicity appearing in the course of subchronic testing may be further characterized with additional functional tests such as neurological examination, electrodiagnostics and possibly with specific behavioural tests. The subsequent neuropathological investigation would have to be expanded to include a detailed evaluation of all neural structures possibly related with the above functional derangements. In case of relevant neurotoxicity subsequent specific behavioural tests might include the evaluation of complex neural functions such as integrated psycho-neuro-motor activity and memory. These behavioural tests might help to explain neurotoxicity and to assess behaviour at low levels of exposure. The implementation of such specific behavioural testing procedures beyond the scope of routine toxicity studies would require a group of investigators capable to earry out appropriate tests. The introduction of such testing will therefore have to be evaluated competitively regarding costs versus the advantages offered by the refinement of the other testing procedures for neurotoxicity including the neuropathological techniques. The performance of behavioural tests without preceding or concomitant toxicological evaluation is not considered to be a feasible approach.

Notes: Abstract Hydroxyurea was administered intraperitoneally to pregnant albino rats in a single dose of 2000 mg/kg on day 14 of gestation. Both the perinatal and postnatal mortality rates of the progeny were increased and their weight gain reduced. Exploratory locomotion of 32-day-old rats, calculated by means of an ‘activity index’, was significantly reduced. The treatment had no effect on the brain weight. The fertility of the progeny was not impaired.

Notes: Conclusions Acid- and aldehyde-induced fluorescence offers a highly sensitive and specific instrument for the histochemical demonstration of biogenic amines. This technique can be used to advantage for the selective identification of those neuronal structures that contain biogenic amines, namely the peripheral postganglionic sympathetic neurones and the central aminergic neuronal systems. Structural changes of impaired aminergic neurones can be ascertained from their fluorescence microscope image and correlated with light and electron microscopical observations, so that selective neurotoxic changes, such as sympathetic denervation of organs, can be detected and the reversibility of these changes tested. The degree of functional and structural changes occurring in the above neuronal systems can be easily quantified by means of microfluorimetry. The histochemical approach is restricted by the necessity of using fresh and specially fixed tissues. The possibility of numerous pitfalls in the interpretation of histochemical reactions requires the simultaneous use of other optical methods, such as light and electron microscopy, or the testing of the uptake of exogeneous amines or their precursors, whenever the occurrence of neurotoxic effects is to be assessed.
