Notes: To facilitate testing large numbers of tomato soma-clones for resistance to bacterial canker, a fast screening procedure was developed. Two inoculation methods were investigated, i.e. excision with an infected scalpel of I) one cotyledon of 2-week-old seedlings, and II) the first true leaf of 3-week-old seedlings, followed by applying a drop of inoculum on the wound. Inoculation by method II discriminated well between populations of partially resistant and susceptible tomato genotypes. A criterion for the selection of single, putatively resistant plants, based on rating scores of the severity of wilting symptoms, was proposed and tested with plants of a Lycopersicon peruvianum accession with a relatively high level of resistance to bacterial canker. Progenies of 279 somaclones, derived from tissue explants of the susceptible tomato cultivar ‘Moneymaker’, were evaluated for resistance. The presence of somaclonal variation for morphological characters in these populations was previously shown. However, no differences were detected between the somaclone population and controls in either mean susceptibility or distribution of plants over disease severity categories. Moreover, plants with major increases in resistance were not detected. These results suggest that the potential of somaclonal variation as a source of resistance to bacterial canker may be limited.

Notes: A series of international collaborative experiments carried out under the auspices of EIFAC sought to compare various sampling methods for stock abundance estimation in European inland waters. Four water bodies were used: the Evo lakes (Finland), Lake Konnevesi (Finland), Lake Constance (Germany) and LakeTegel (Germany). The experiments emphasized the difficulties in obtaining reliable fish stock estimates when using different sampling methods. Comparisons between the various methods were also limited. Poor data reliability was attributed both to problems inherent in the various methods and to deficiencies in the sampling design. These results emphasize the caution with which sampling data from inland water bodies should be interpreted.

Notes: Summary The use of retinoic acid is a new approach in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia. We outline the therapy in a 61-year-old patient with acute promyelocytic leukemia who had not responded to standard chemotherapy but in whom the administration of 13-cis-retinoic acid resulted in complete remission for 24 months. In relapse the patient was treated with all-trans-retinoic acid in combination with two cycles of daunorubicin and cytosine arabinoside and achieved another complete remission.

Notes: Abstract Histoplasma infections in Europe are rare, and acute disseminated histoplasmosis has only been observed in immunocompromised persons. We describe a case of acute disseminated histoplasmosis in a young, nonimmunocompromised European woman. The probable source of infection was Sri Lanka or the Maldives. At presentation she was severely ill with fever, lymphadenopathy, anemia, thrombocytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly, and polyserositis. Histologically, myelofibrosis and osteosclerosis were observed with extramedullary hematopoiesis. Histoplasma capsulatum yeasts were detected in bone marrow trephine biopsy by methenamine silver staining. Treatment with conventional and liposomal amphotericin B and subsequent itraconazole led to rapid and complete recovery.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary ESR investigations of lyophilized blood of patients with acute lymphatic leukemia exhibit an increase in spin concentration and an additional peak not present in control samples. This peak disappears almost completely concomittantly with a reduction in spin concentration after treating the patients with prednisolone, vincristine, and doxorubicin or after addition of 5 mM of CuCl2 to blood samples. The results show that the ESR spectra of lyophilized blood samples can be utilized to follow the effect of therapy. Moreover, they suggest that the leukemic blood possesses a high concentration of antioxidants.

Notes: Abstract Two effects are considered to influence the time dependence of the transformed volume in a binary alloy: a) the impingement effect (IE), takes into account the mutual impingement of the growing particles and b) the impoverishment effect (PE), which considers the decrease of driving forces and the increase of the diffusion paths in the approximation of an impoverishing matrix. Combining both effects growth equations are obtained analogous toJohnson-Mehl-Avrami only for one-dimensional growth.

Notes: Summary Skin biopsy specimens from five patients (three females and two males) treated parenterally with gold were investigated using transmission electron microscopy. X-ray microanalysis and electron diffraction were used to determine the dermal heavy metal content. Additional sections were stained for light microscopic examination. The amount of elemental gold administered to the patients over a period of years to alleviate rheumatoid arthritis lay between a minimum of 4.0 g and a maximum of 10.0 g. In one and the same patient dermal histiocytic gold aggregations in sun-exposed areas of skin displayed a different pattern and divergent physiochemical states from the gold deposits in non-UV-exposed skin, where aurosome-like amorphous formations are found in the cells of the upper dermis. Additional spherical particles are associated predominantly with phagolysosomes in melanophages beneath solar-irradiated epidermis. Convergent beam electron diffraction proves the crystalline nature of the spherical auriferous deposits. The occurrence of skin rash was not related to different physicochemical states of the precious metal.
