Notizen: Giant cell lichenoid dermatitis is a recently described dermatosis thought to be an unusual lichenoid drug eruption. It is characterized by a generalized, pruritic, papulosquamous eruption sparing palms, soles, face and mucous membranes. Histopathologic findings include areas of epidermal hyperplasia and atrophy with focal vacuolar alteration of the basal layer, exocytosis and cytoid body formation. The dermis contains a band-like, mononuclear cell infiltrate at the dermoepidermal junction with admixed cosinophils, plasma cells and large multinucleate cells. The histologic differential diagnosis includes infectious processes, sarcoidosis, lichen nitidus, lupus erythematosus and lichen planus. We report 3 patients with giant cell lichenoid dermatitis, one of whom was subsequently diagnosed as having sarcoidosis. Because giant cell lichenoid dermatitis may resemble sarcoidosis both clinically and histologically, and because cutaneous sarcoid is often associated with systemic involvement, the diagnosis of sarcoid should be strongly considered in patients with giant cell lichenoid dermatitis.

Notizen: Abstract The incidence of lung, pleural, nasal; larynx, and pharynx cancer in relation to work in the nickel mining and refining industry was studied from 1978 to 1987 in the male population of the French territory of New Caledonia in the South Pacific. The results showed no greater risk in the population of nickel workers than in the general male population. The incidence of respiratory cancer in New Caledonia was found to be comparable to that of industrialized countries, except for pleural cancer for which there was an excess risk in New Caledonia. A case-control study within the cohort of nickel industry workers comprised 80 lung cancer, 12 larynx cancer, 20 pharynx cancer cases, and 298 controls, and took account of 18 substances to which workers were exposed, five of them nickel compounds. None of the substances, or any other occupational variable, was shown to increase the risk of respiratory cancer, except for cancer of the larynx in relation to level and duration of exposure to dust and engine exhaust fumes on mining sites (odds ratios ranged from five to 5.4 and were significant). These results provide no evidence that exposures specific to the nickel industry in New Caledonia increase the risk of respiratory cancer. This might be due to the involvement of less airborne nickel than the amount observed in positive studies elsewhere. The high incidence of respiratory cancer in New Caledonia, compared with other South Pacific islands, might be attributable to an environmental risk connected with the presence of mineral fibers in the geologic strata, as well as to tobacco and alcohol consumption levels similar to those prevailing in France.

Notizen: Abstract: Large changes in the production of certain proteins often follow axotomy. How the cell body is signaled to make these changes, or terminate them after regeneration is finished, is unclear. This issue was addressed by studying an axotomized giant identified neuron, the giant cerebral neuron of the sea slug Aplysia, both in vivo and in culture. One week after axon crush in vivo, there were increases of 1.5–18-fold in the 5-h incorporation of [35S]methionine into seven proteins identified by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. There were decreases of five-to 28-fold in the labeling of four other proteins. An axotomized giant cerebral neuron grows vigorously when placed in culture and forms chemical synapses with appropriate target cells while continuing unabated growth. The labeling of two of the proteins that up-regulate after axotomy in vivo was suppressed by the presence of target cells in culture. For one of the proteins, this effect was also produced by membranes of target cells, but not by medium conditioned by exposure to target cells. These results are consistent with the idea that loss of membrane–membrane contact with target cells (or its restoration) is involved in the initiation (or termination) of the up-regulation of certain proteins after axotomy.

Notizen: Abstract: We examined the effect of moderate hypothermia (30°C) on neuronal injury in murine cortical cell cultures. Lowering the temperature during and after a period of oxygen-glucose deprivation reduced both the release of glutamate to the bathing medium and accompanying neuronal degeneration. Hypothermia immediately after brief exposure to high concentrations of NMDA or glutamate also reduced the resulting neuronal degeneration. This protective effect was not eliminated when MK-801 and 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione were added immediately after washout of the exogenously added excitotoxin, suggesting that it was mediated by actions additional to reduction of endogenous late glutamate release. Hypothermia applied only during exposure to NMDA or glutamate, whether brief or prolonged, did not reduce subsequent cytosolic calcium accumulation or neuronal degeneration, suggesting that the postsynaptic induction of NMDA receptor-mediated excitotoxicity is not sensitive to temperature reduction. However, hypothermia during prolonged S-α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid or kainate exposure did reduce neuronal degeneration.

Notizen: Abstract: Changes in protein synthesis are thought to be important in the response of the neuron to axotomy. Certain axonally transported proteins whose synthesis increases probably play important roles in regeneration of the axon. Although little is known about the regulation of these changes, the cell often controls its production of proteins at the nuclear level, where transactivating proteins modulate the transcription of specific genes. Thus, changes in nuclear proteins might be expected to be among the early events following axotomy, but such changes have not yet been described. We have addressed this issue by dissecting out single nuclei from [35S]methionine-labeled giant R2 neurons of Aplysia and analyzing the proteins by two-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. This procedure was used to avoid contamination with nonneuronal and nonnuclear proteins. Our results demonstrate large increases in two nuclear proteins (56 kDa and 41 kDa) and decreases in two others (77 kDa and 46 kDa) 5 h after axotomy. These are the earliest postaxotomy changes in [35S]methionine-labeled proteins that have been reported.

Notizen: Films of several polyimides having various chain rigidities were prepared on silicon substrates from the poly(amic acid) precursors by a conventional spin-coat/dry/thermal imidization process: poly(p-phenylene pyromellitimide) (PMDA-PDA), poly(4,4'-oxydiphenylene pyromellitimide) (PMDA-ODA), poly(p-phenylene biphenyltetracarboximide) (BPDA-PDA), and poly(4,4'-oxydiphenylene benzophenonetetracarboximide) (BTDA-ODA). The film properties, such as residual stress, refractive indices, and birefringence were investigated using wafer bending and prism coupling techniques. The stress was relatively low for both fully rodlike PMDA-PDA and semirigid BPDA-PDA, intermediate for semiflexible PMDA-ODA, and high for flexible BTDA-ODA. However, even for the rigid polyimides such low stress is achievable only in thin films (≤10 μm thick for PMDA-PDA and ≤20 μm thick for BPDA-PDA). Otherwise, they are no longer low stress materials. Overall, the film stress was very sensitive to the film thickness in the rigid polyimides but less sensitive to it in the flexible polyimides. The lower stress polyimide film exhibited the higher anisotropy of refractive indices (i.e., higher birefringence, which is a measure of molecular in-plane orientation). The molecular in-plane orientation, which is a critical factor to the film stress, becomes higher as the polymer chain rigidity is greater and the film is thinner. In the polyimide films prepared from the precursors in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, which has a high boiling point and low vapor pressure, the molecular in-plane orientation is mainly induced by the surface of substrates rather than other film process factors including spinning in spin coating.

Notizen: Measurements of absorption losses in KNbO3 and MgO-doped KNbO3 were made in the blue and near-infrared wavelength regions using laser calorimetry. In the doped samples, the absorption loss for blue light was found to be 40% lower than that of the undoped samples. An enhancement in the infrared loss, caused by the presence of blue light, was observed in doped and undoped samples, but found to be much greater in the MgO-doped crystals. The blue-enhanced infrared absorption was characterized using two-wavelength laser calorimetry. Temporal variations in the second-harmonic power, caused by nonuniform heating of the active volume by the absorbed infrared and second-harmonic power, are described.
