    Notes: Abstract Sequences of 16S rRNA of the nitrogen-fixing Frankia strain Ag45/Mut15 and the ineffective Frankia strain AgB1.9 were used to design a genus-specific oligonucleotide probe. Hybridization experiments of this Frankia probe and a second probe, specific for Nif+-Frankia strains only, were used to detect Frankia specific target sequences in RNA isolations from soil. A method is described for direct isolation of RNA from a loamy soil and a peat. Yields of about 10 ng RNA/g wet soil are obtained without detectable contamination with humic acids. Isolation of RNA after initial extraction of bacteria from soil resulted in significantly lower RNA yields, compared to the direct isolation procedure. Hybridization with both probes against rRNA isolations from Frankia-containing soil could detect target sequences within RNA isolations from 1 g wet soil with an estimated detection limit of 104 cells.

    Notes: Abstract Experiments that demonstrate quantitatively the importance of laser absorption dynamics for ultraviolet laser ablation of organic materials are presented. Laser pulse transmission measurements have been performed on 0.1 μm spin-coated polyimide films at three ultraviolet wavelengths (193 nm, 248 nm, and 355 nm) over the fluence range 10−3 −10 J/cm2. Target transmission is observed to increase with increasing fluence by a factor of ∼5 at 193 nm, and a factor of ∼10 at 248 nm. In contrast, transmission decreases by approximately one half during 355 nm target irradiation. These results are analyzed theoretically with a two-level model of chromophore absorption. This theory is also applied to reported pulsed UV-laser polyimide ablation data. It is shown that an accurate description of the fluence-dependent film absorption leads to a prediction of the etch depth versus pulse fluence relationship in good agreement with experimental data.

    Notes: Abstract There are inherent difficulties in using high-resolution DSA in interventional radiology for measuring vascular luminal diameter since enlargement ratios are not constant. We present a system that permits accurate determination of vascular lumen diameters by means of a special angiographic catheter with pre-defined marking points. The accuracy of this measuring method was explored in tests using phantoms. In vivo practicability of the method was proved in PTA and stent implantations in 39 patients. This method with a maximum error of measurement of 5% appears to provide adequate safety in the choice of suitable dilating balloons and stents in interventional vascular procedures. In follow-up, it permits the accurate measurement of neo-intimal thickness.

    Notes: Reflectivity measurements of the backsurface of thin polyimide films indicate a transient decrease in reflectivity during ArF (193 nm) excimer laser ablation. The posterior surface reflectivity is decreased by 20%–40% over the range of incident laser fluences from 75 to 175 mJ/cm2, respectively. The results are discussed within the framework of a theoretical model of saturable absorption, and calculations are presented which are in good agreement with the experimental results. It is concluded that the observed decrease in reflectivity is the result of transient changes in the optical properties within the solid polymer material which occur during ultraviolet laser ablation.

    Notes: Abstract: Ineffective, non-infective actinomycetous isolates obtained from actinorhizal nodules of Coriaria nepalensis and Datisca cannabina were identified as Frankia using whole cell fatty acid analysis. The isolates exhibited fatty-acid patterns very similar to those of confirmed Frankia strains from other host plants (Alnus, Casuarina, Colletia, Comptonia, Elaeagnus and Hippophae). All Frankia strains, including Coriaria and Datisca isolates, showed fatty-acid profiles very distinct from those of other actinomycetes used as controls (Actinomyces, Geodermatophilus, Nocardia, Mycobacterium and Streptomyces). For the genus Frankia, a characteristic pattern of five fatty acids (15:0; 15:1; 16:0 iso; 17:0 and 17:1) was found. These fatty acids comprised 75% or more of the total content. All Frankia strains could be placed into three subgroups. Coriaria isolates were found in the largest subgroup which contained most Frankia strains from other hosts while ineffective strains from Alnus, Elaeagnus and Datisca were distributed in all three subgroups of Frankia.

    Notes: Summary Duplexsonography (DS) has become a well established method for diagnosing peripheral vascular diseases. Technical developments (higher resolution of transducer and deeper penetration) have made also abdominal and retroperitoneal vessels, including renal arteries, accessible for duplexsonography. This method provides the opportunity to recognize renal artery stenoses causing renovascular hypertension without invasive procedures. We therefore examined 86 hypertensive patients with a high likelihood of renovascular hypertension. Due to technical problems (bowel gas, adipositas) we excluded 7 patients. 79 patients (17–79 years) were included in our study. Flow patterns of several renal vascular areas were evaluated while the renal artery was demonstrated on a B-scan. A spectrumanalysis included the evaluation of the frequency pattern (widening of the frequency band and loss of a frequency free window below the systolic rise?), the sloping of the diastolic shoulder, and the calculation of different parameters like accelerationindex, decelerationindex, resistanceindex, accelerationtime, and systolic peak velocity. The accuracy of DS in diagnosing renal artery stenoses was compared with arterial digital substraction angiography (DSA). Renal artery stenoses was diagnosed in 21 out of 158 renal arteries (13%). Except for the systolic peak velocity no significant correlations could be found of any of the indices from spectrumanalysis with hemodynamically significant stenoses (〉50%). However, the following 3 criteria proved to be valuable signs of a hemodynamically significant stenoses: 1) Maximal systolic accelaration 〉3 m/s, 2) Steep sloping diastolic shoulder, and 3) Turbulence of all frequency ranges without a frequency free window below the systolic rise. Compared with DSA the sensitivity of DS was 84,0%, the specificity was 98,5%, and the predictive value 91% in significant stenoses. Abdominal DS seems to be a potent noninvasive method in diagnosing renal artery stenoses with a good sensitivity and a high specifity and a high predictive value.
