Notes: The authors report the functional analysis of the purified mouse factor H allotypes H. 1 and H.2, which were clearly distinguished from each other by an immunodiffusion test. Both allotypes acted as a co-factor for factor I in cleaving mouse C3b and we found no significant difference between their activities. The results strongly suggest that the function of mouse factor H for the co-factor activity has been well conserved between two allotypes.

Notes: CuGaSe2 chalcopyrite compounds were grown heteroepitaxially on both GaAs and GaP substrates by means of the low-pressure metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition method. Optical and structural properties were characterized comprehensively by photoreflectance (PR), photoluminescence (PL), x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, transmission electron diffraction, and electron-probe microanalysis. The CuGaSe2 epilayers had c(001) surface on GaAs(001) substrates and a(100) surface on GaP(001) substrates, respectively, the results being similar to the case of CuAlSe2. Energies of A, B, and C excitons associated with uppermost valence bands were determined from analysis of PR spectra, and the energies of good-quality epilayers are close to those of the bulk crystal. The slight increase of the crystal-field splitting in the valence bands were discussed in terms of the lattice strain in the epilayer caused by the lattice mismatch. Low-temperature PL spectra exhibited an intense peak at 1.71 eV, the energy being in good agreement with the A-exciton energy. A weak peak due to a free-to-acceptor transition was also observed at 1.66 eV. A broad PL peak at 1.76 eV was observed together with the intense band-edge PL at 1.67 eV, and the peak was assigned to relate to the B-exciton transition.

Notes: The diffusion and n-type doping of Si into GaAs from a novel diffusion source consisting of an undoped SiOx/SiN double-layered film were achieved by rapid thermal annealing at 860–940 °C. The film properties of the double-layered films employed as Si diffusion sources are experimentally presented. The characteristics of the Si diffused layers were investigated by secondary ion mass spectrometry, capacitance-voltage measurement, and the Hall method. The carrier profiles exceeded 2×1018 cm−3 and featured an abrupt diffusion front, while a maximum electron concentration of 6×1018 cm−3 was obtained at 940 °C. The diffused Si profiles were consistent with the SiGa+−VGa− pair diffusion model.

Notes: A new four-layer resist system was developed to fabricate small capacitance niobium tunnel junctions. Nb/AlOx/Al junctions were used to make a superconducting single electron transistor composed of two dc SQUIDs in series. The current-voltage characteristics were measured and two types of resonant tunneling of Cooper pairs were observed at different magnetic fields.

Notes: [Auszug] In contrast to the charged-particle or photon beam, the meta-stable-atom beam can not be converged and therefore the electron emission image produced by metastables is difficult to obtain. To date, only an emission microscope image by fast argon atoms mixed with metastable ones has been reported6. ...

Notes: Abstract This study investigated the effectiveness of laparoscopic selective proximal vagotomy using a CO2 laser. Irradiation of the stomach was performed from the serosal aspect using a defocused CO2 laser beam. In the first experiment, the inhibitory effect on cysteamine ulcers in rats was compared between surgical vagotomy and CO2 laser vagotomy using three different irradiation fields. The results suggested that irradiation near the lesser curvature provided sufficient denervation. In the second experiment, CO2 laser vagotomy was performed laparoscopically in dogs. The procedure lasted less than 1 h and a postoperative endoscopic Congo red test confirmed its effectiveness. Subserosal tissues including the vagus nerve branches showed degeneration and were replaced by fibrosis 3 months postoperatively, but the deeper tissues were spared. In conclusion, laparoscopic CO2 laser vagotomy may be as effective for reducing acid secretion as standard surgical vagotomy. Its simplicity and safety suggest that a clinical trial in humans may be warranted.

Notes: Summary A tannic acid-osmium staining technique and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy were used to demonstrate changes in the glycocalyx and ciliary interconnections of the vestibular sensory cells of guinea pigs after extradural obliteration of the endolymphatic sac and duct. Three months after the obliteration, it was possible to observe degeneration in the glycocalyx and the ciliary interconnections as well as the tip links. These findings suggest that the endolymphatic hydrops causes an endolymphatic ionic imbalance which affects the glycocalyx and ciliary interconnections resulting in further morphological changes of the cilia. The tip links, which are believed to be involved in sensory cell transduction, also seem to be affected.

Notes: Summary A 16-year-old Japanese girl with 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase deficiency showed peripheral neuropathy. There were no significant responses to vitamin B6, vitamin B12 or folate, given alone or in combination. With the addition of betaine monohydrate, she has been free from gait disturbance and muscle weakness. The concentration ofS-adenosylmethionine in cerebrospinal fluid, which was undetectable before receiving betaine monohydrate, increased to about the normal level 24 months after treatment with betaine monohydrate.

Notes: Abstract Two ways of rate control for diaphragm pacing are proposed. One is rate control using only the patients' body temperature (method I). The other is rate control by both the patients' heart rate and body temperature (method II). To test the effectiveness of these methods, a diaphragm pacemaker which can be controlled by both heart rate and body temperature has been developed. It was applied to nine mongrel dogs. The pacing rate is controlled by atrial blood temperature (method I) or by both heart rate and temperature (method II). The animal's metabolism was elevated by the administration of a pyrogenic drug. It was found that method I is not suited to rapid changes in metabolism; however, it is useful in extreme metabolic elevation. An animal's metabolism was supported by using method II in all ranges of metabolism. This method proved more effective than method I for rate-responsive diaphragm pacing.
