Notes: Abstract Asexual reproduction by formation of swimming buds which metamorphose directly into polyps plays a most important role in the propagation ofCassiopea andromeda (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa). (C. andromeda polyps, originally supplied by the Löbbecke Museum and Aquarium Düsseldorf, FRG, were cultured in our laboratories.) We have defined five budding stages and investigated epithelial recruitment and dynamics during bud formation using intracellular vital stains. The region of cell recruitment was found to encircle the budding site asymmetrically. The aboral side contributing considerably less to the developing bud than the oral and lateral sides. Furthermore, it was found that the epithelial flow involved in bud formation is part of a permanent apico-basal displacement of ectodermal cells. Light and electronmicroscopic investigations revealed that no drastic changes occur at the cellular level, neither in the ectoderm nor in the endoderm which both participate in bud formation. Scanning and transmissionelectron microscopic investigations of the swimming bud revealed that the ectoderm is composed of three, and the endoderm of two, cell types. Nerve elements have been detected near the mesoglea between both ecto- and endodermal cells. Amoebocytes are regularly found either at the basis of epidermal cells or within the mesoglea, whereas symbionts are located in the endoderm. Buds induced to metamorphose by a bacterial-inducing factor were used to investigate morphological and ultrastructural changes occurring during metamorphosis and scyphistoma morphogenesis. Metamorphosis starts with the settling of a bud, followed by the formation of the pedal disk in which desmocytes, as typical cnidarian adhesive structures, are differentiated. Metamorphosis is completed with the formation of the mouth and tentacles. Whereas metamorphosis of cnidarian planulae implies considerable changes at the cellular level, tissue remodeling processes prevail in bud metamorphosis ofC. andromeda.

Notes: Abstract Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty can be performed safely and effectively in patients with chronic total coronary occlusion. To investigate the effect on left ventricular function, global and regional left ventricular ejection fraction were analyzed by contrast angiography in 49 patients before and 10±6 weeks after successful recanalization. Coronary angiography at follow-up showed reocclusion in 12 patients (24%). In 37 patients with patent arteries global ejection fraction increased from 55.8±7.1% at baseline to 62.5 ± 11.3% at follow-up (P 〈 0.001), and regional wall motion assessed by the centerline method improved from −1.7 + 1.0 to – 0.6 ± 1.5 standard deviations/chord (P〈0.001). In contrast, in patients with reocclusion neither global ejection fraction nor regional wall motion were significantly different at follow-up compared with baseline. Changes in global or regional left ventricular function after coronary recanalization were unrelated to other parameters such as severity of angina, duration of occlusion, history of myocardial infarction, presence or absence of visible collaterals, or baseline left ventricular function. Thus in patients with primarily successful recanalization of chronically occluded coronary arteries persistent vessel patency is the major determinant of global and regional improvement of left ventricular function.

Notes: Abstract From 1988 to 1991 the long-term efficacy of a combined therapy with a polyvalent immunoglobulin/cytomegalovirus (CMV) hyperimmunoglobulin, oral low dose zidovudine, oral cotrimoxazole or inhaled pentamidine was investigated in three groups of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected children. Group 1A consisted of three perinatally infected children with a CD4 cell decrease of 〉400, cells/μl per year. Group 1B were 17 perinatally infected children with a CD4 cell decrease of 〈400 cells/μl per year. Group 2 comprised eight haemophilic children infected by clotting factors. Despite combined therapy none of group 1A survived longer than 12 months showing a rapid loss of CD4 cell counts, progressive encephalopathy, wasting syndrome and severe bacterial, fungal and CMV reactivation. Under pure intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy severe bacterial infections were seen in 1 of 12 children in group 1B. The majority of these patients showed increases or stabilisation of length and weight percentiles. In this group low dose zidovudine therapy was of benefit in HIV-associated neurological symptoms. Nevertheless combined therapy could not prevent further deterioration of CD4 cell counts. In group 2 severe bacterial infections were not seen under IVIG therapy. In this group a temporary increase (6 months) of CD4 cell counts under IVIG/zidovudine combined therapy occurred.Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) prophylaxis with oral cotrimoxazole or inhaled pentamidine successfully prevented PCP in all three groups. Under CMV hyperimmunoglobulins (n=22), ten out of ten patients did not acquire primary CMV infection, whereas CMV reactivations mainly located in the CNS could not be prevented in 5 of 12 patients. Our findings indicate that this combined therapy showed remarkable differences in therapeutic efficacy in children with different modes of HIV progression. These modes must be considered for correct timing, dosage and evaluation of therapeutic measures.

Notes: In 70 children with defined chronic chest disease, immunoglobulins, IgG subclass levels and antibody concentrations specific for Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib), and pneumococcal antigen, were related to disease severity. Bronchological examinations revealed 30 children with chronic bronchitis, 21 with bronchial deformations and 19 with bronchiectasis. Of the 70 children 12 (17.1%) showed an underlying immunodeficiency. The commonest finding was an IgG subclass deficiency, 7 were IgG2 and 1 IgG3 deficient, followed by IgA deficiency in 3 patients. All patients had normal IgG and IgM levels except one who had immunodeficiency with elevated IgM. Pneumococcal antibody levels were found to increase between patient groups in the order healthy children 〈 chronic bronchitis 〈 bronchiectasis 〈 bronchial deformations (p 〈 0.01), but this was not the case for Hib antibodies. We found no selective deficiency of pneumococcal and Hib antibodies in our patients. Pathogens were detected in bronchial cultures from 10% of patients with chronic bronchitis, 33% of those with bronchial deformations and in 63% with bronchiectasis. This increase (p 〈 0.01) reflects a more severe inflammation of the respiratory tract in such patients. However, immunodeficiencies were equally distributed between patient groups. We conclude that only a subgroup of children with chronic chest disease have an underlying immunodefiency, but most patients (83%) do synthesize normal or even high antibodies in the presence of a bacterial load.

Notes: Cd1−xZnxTe crystals grown by the traveling heater method have been investigated by low-temperature photoluminescence. The excitonic energy gap as a function of the alloy composition was determined over the complete range of x=0 to x=1. The composition dependent broadening of the neutral acceptor bound exciton (A 0X) line was determined. Theoretical calculations, where the A 0X exciton is treated within the pseudodonor model and the conduction/valence band offset between CdTe and ZnTe is taken into account, give close agreement with the experiment for x≤0.77. Evidence for clustering of Zn atoms is found for x≥0.77.

Notes: We report on optical absorption its magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), optically detected electron spin-resonance (ODESR), and electron nuclear double-resonance (ODENDOR) investigations of plastically deformed semi-insulating GaAs. By plastic deformation arsenic antisite defects are created which show a similar ODESR pattern as EL2 defects present in the material prior to deformation. EL2 and the new antisite defects can be distinguished by their different spectral dependence of the MCD. The new antisite defect formation starts at 2% deformation and is investigated as a function of the degree of deformation; additional EL2 defects are not created. With ODENDOR it is shown that the atomistic structure of the EL2 defects changes in the deformed GaAs.

Notes: The conditions for the preparation of nominally undoped semi-insulating (SI) InP wafers by annealing under controlled phosphorus pressure are described. It is demonstrated by the results of electrical profile measurements (differential Hall effect) and by photoluminescence that diffusion effects in a thin peripheral layer (≈20 μm) can be correlated to a phosphorus in- and indium out-diffusion. But diffusion of these species is correlated to a donor behavior and relatively slow. It can, therefore, not be used to explain the SI bulk property which seems not to depend on the phosphorus overpressure during annealing.
