Notes: It is reported that Nd-Fe-B magnetic powders prepared by utilizing the HDDR (hydrogenation, disproportionation, desorption, and recombination) phenomena exhibit high coercivity, and the addition of Co, Ga, and Zr induces magnetic anisotropy in these powders. HDDR phenomena are caused by the heat treatment in hydrogen (H treatment) and subsequently in vacuum (V treatment). Present works describe the effects of V-treatment conditions on magnetic properties of Nd12.6Febal.CoxB6.0 (x=0–17.4) alloys. The powders V-treated at lower temperature show lower remanence and no noticeable magnetic anisotropy. V treatment at higher temperature enhances remanence and increases the differences of remanence between the powders aligned with and without magnetic field. Higher values are obtained in Co added alloys. This result suggests that a selective grain growth of Nd2Fe14B grains during V treatment plays an important role for the inducement of magnetic anisotropy in HDDR-treated powders. The temperature for complete recombination reaction under evacuating condition decreases with increasing Co content. It can be said that Co addition enhances recombination reaction and results in acceleration of grain growth.

Notes: Separation of ionic or isotopic species in a magnetized sheet plasma has been studied by using the ion cyclotron resonance method. The sheet plasma was used instead of a cylindrical plasma in which many unfavorable collisions take place. An rf electric field is applied to the plasma by two parallel plate electrodes. It is shown that a resonance is strongly dependent on the plasma space potential across the sheet plasma. The resonance spectra of argon, neon, and nitrogen ions in the low dense sheet plasma with a shallow potential well are clearly observed, while the resonances in high dense plasma with a deep potential well are not observed. It is also found that the resonance frequency for a corresponding ion is proportional to the magnetic field strength.

Notes: The effects of composition and additives on the microstructures and magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B melt-spun ribbons were studied. Experimental results have revealed that homogeneous grain structure with fine grain size was obtained on composition close to 2-14-1 stoichiometry with additives. It was also found that Nb was very effective in increasing both remanence and coercivity in a Nd-Fe-B melt-spun ribbon. A high-energy product of 151.2 kJ/m3 (19.0 MGOe) was obtained from an isotropic (Nd0.5Pr0.5)12Fe72Co8B6Nb2 melt-spun ribbon with a remanence of 0.926 T and a coercivity exceeding 1200 kA/m (∼15 kOe).

Notes: We have performed tunneling experiments on planar junctions Al/AlOx/Nd2−xCexCuO4−y. This is the first experiment using epitaxial films with the planar junction for electron-doped high Tc Nd2−xCexCuO4−y. The temperature dependencies of the gap features were measured, in which the phonon structures were clearly observed in the normalized conductance curve. These results show accord with the phonon peaks in the phonon density of states obtained recently by neutron inelastic scattering experiments.

Notes: Summary Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is currently classified into 6 major types, HCV-1 through -6, each of which can be further divided into a few subtypes, e.g., HCV-1a, -1b, -1c, etc., on the basis of sequence variation of the viral genome. The core and E1 envelope regions of HCV genome were amplified from sera of Indonesian patients using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Sequence analysis of both core and E1 regions followed by molecular evolutionary phylogenetic analysis identified a novel sequence variant of HCV-1 (Td-6). Antibodies in the serum from which Td-6 was isolated reacted only marginally to the core protein of HCV-J, a representative strain of HCV-1b, despite strong antibody response against a mixture of the core, NS3 and NS4 proteins of HCV-1a. The possible mechanism for the diminished reactivity of the antibodies in the serum to the core protein of HCV-J is discussed.

Notes: Summary Treatment of a mouse macrophage cell line Mk1 with pokeweed mitogen (PWM) either before or during but not after virus inoculation resulted in an enhancement of dengue virus (DV) infection. The infection enhancement was primarily due to an increase in the number of DV-infected cells but not to increased virus production in a cell. These results suggested that PWM treatment mediated increased DV binding and/or penetration to Mk1 cells, thereby resulting in the infection enhancement.N-acetylglucosamine (GlucNAc) did not suppress PWM-mediated enhancement of DV infection when added to Mk1 cells after PWM treatment was done, although GlucNAc clearly suppressed the effect of PWM when added simultaneously with PWM. The results implied the possibility that the PWM-mediated increase in viral binding/penetration was not due to a cross-linking by PWM between DV and a cell-surface receptor, but due to another mechanism, presumably exposure of a masked DV receptor(s). The DV receptor, unidentified as yet, involved in the PWM-mediated infection enhancement appeared to have no relation with IgG Fc receptors that are known to be involved in antibody-mediated enhancement of DV infection.

Notes: Summary A total of 1,355 cases of tularemia observed between 1924 and 1987 in Japan were viewed on the basis of clinical manifestations and the results were compared with those in the United States. The incubation period varied from one day to over one month. In 75.5% of cases, the symptoms of illness appeared within seven days with the peak on the third day. A sudden onset of flu-like symptoms was generally observed, and 92% of cases was followed by regional lymph node swelling which mostly appeared in axillary and cubital regions. They were observed predominantly at the left rather than the right side. In contrast with the cases in the United States, the number of cases of ulceroglandular type in Japan was only one third of those of glandular type. None of the pleuropulmonary cases or fatal tularemia have been reported in Japan. The number of oropharyngeal cases has remarkably increased after World War II, and is still on the rise, presumably because of the change of dietary habits in Japan. All these characteristics of Japanese tularemia are assumed to be caused by low virulence of Japanese strains ofFrancisella tularensis.
