Notes: Until now, the origin of hard magnetic properties of rapidly quenched Nd-Fe-B alloys with lower Nd concentration is not clear. In this paper, the phase compositions of rapidly quenched Nd4Fe77.5B18.5 alloys annealed under different conditions have been studied by using zero-field spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Mössbauer effect (ME) techniques. It is found that there exists a certain amount of Nd2Fe14B phase in the samples annealed at 960 °C and ingot alloy, which have poor hard magnetic properties; while, the sample annealed under optimal condition consists only of bct-Fe3B as the main phase and a small amount of a-Fe. However, the ME result indicates that about 5 at. % Fe atoms in FeIII (8 g) site of bct-Fe3B have been replaced by Nd atoms; the NMR result demonstrates that 11B NMR spectrum is the characteristic peak of bct-Fe3B, but it broadens asymmetrically to the high frequency side, which is due to the bct-Fe3B influenced by Nd atoms. The amplitude of radio frequency (rf) excitation field required to get the maximum 11B spin-echo signal from bct-Fe3B in the sample annealed at 839 °C is only about one third as much as that required to excite the 11B in the bct-Fe3B influenced by Nd atoms in the sample annealed at 670 °C for a short time, which implies the latter has a larger coercivity field than the former. It is concluded that the origin of hard magnetic properties of Nd4Fe77.5B18.5 alloy is not related to the 2:14:1 phase, but to the change of bct-Fe3B itself.

Notes: The metastable compound Nd6Fe77B17 has been obtained by the crystallization from the amorphous phase in the Nd-Fe-B system. Its crystal structure is similar to that of the compound Nd2Fe23B3. At high temperature this metastable compound decomposes into α-Fe and Nd1.1Fe4B4 phases. The room temperature magnetization and coercivity are 154 A m2/kg and 12 kA/m, respectively.

Notes: The characteristics of Cu precipitation on various types of defects associated with oxygen precipitation in Czochralski-grown silicon are investigated by transmission electron microscopy and the electron-beam-induced-current technique. Specimens containing dominantly either punched-out dislocations or bulk stacking faults were intentionally contaminated with Cu at various temperatures and cooled at three different rates. Colonies of Cu precipitates developed irrespective of cooling rate, apparently originating from punched-out dislocations developed around oxygen precipitates. In heavily contaminated specimens cooled fast from the contamination temperature, Cu also precipitates on Frank partial dislocations bounding stacking faults. During slow cooling, precipitation of Cu takes place on Frank partials only in lightly contaminated specimens but never in heavily contaminated specimens. Cu precipitates in colonies are thermally more stable than those formed on Frank partials. It is concluded that punched-out dislocations are more favorable precipitation sites for Cu than Frank partials.

Notes: Magnetic granular CoCu alloy ribbons were prepared by the melt-spun method, and the structural, magnetotransport, magnetic properties, and the effects of annealing on these properties were studied by x-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer, and magnetoresistance (MR) measurements at room temperature. Giant magnetoresistance was observed over a broad range of Co concentrations with a maximum MR ratio of 7.8% (at x=0.20 and 500 °C annealing) under a magnetic field of 20 kOe at room temperature. It is found that the relationship between MR and magnetic field H depended strongly on the annealing temperature and a linear MR-H relation could be obtained at an optimum annealing condition. The MR ratio did not depend on the direction between H and electric current I. These features are very suitable for making isotropic magnetic field transducers.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-one wide compatibility varieties (WCVs) of rice together with three indica and three japonica testers were assayed with 160 DNA probes that were selected to represent the entire RFLP map at an average interval of 11 cM. On the basis of four enzyme digestion 125 probes detected polymorphisms among the WCVs and subspecies' testers. Among these polymorphic probes there were 68 that could distinguish the indica from the japonica testers. Two dendrograms were constructed on the basis of 398 polymorphic fragments of 125 probes and 139 polymorphic fragments of 68 subspecies' differentiating probes in combination with single enzymes, respectively. The reliability and representativeness of the testers and the levels of DNA variations among WCVs were estimated. The potential of WCVs in the utilization of intersubspecific heterosis is discussed.

Notes: Summary Genetic diversity and differentiation in indica and japonica groups of the cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) were studied by assaying DNA restriction fragment length polymorphisms of 12 indica and 14 japonica rice lines digested with three restriction endonucleases. A total of 49 probes were selected to represent the entire RFLP map at intervals of 20–30 cM. It was shown that 95 of the 145 possible probe/enzyme combinations, involving 43 probes and all three enzymes, detected restriction fragment length variation, and the degree of polymorphism varied greatly from one probe/enzyme combination to another. These results demonstrate that indica rice is genetically more diverse than japonica type. Significant differentiation between the two rice groups was detected by 33 probes representing 11 of the 12 rice chromosomes. It was deduced that the processes leading to differentiation involved a combination of molecular events that include base substitutions and insertion/deletions.

Notes: Abstract Amorphous Bi2DyFe5O12 films have been prepared by rf sputtering technique. The magnetic properties, structure and effect of annealing have been investigated. The magnetization increases with increasing magnetic field and is not saturated at a high magnetic field of 65 kOe. In the temperature range 20 K〈T〈200 K the susceptibility can be described by a Curie-Weiss law with a Weiss constant of θ=−15 K. The effective paramagnetic moment for the iron ion (4.1 μ B ) is much smaller than the theoretical moment (5.9 μ B ). Above 200 K the slope in χ−1 vsT curve changes. The Weiss constant and effective paramagnetic moment for the iron ion increase. After annealing above 600°C the amorphous samples crystallize to a single garnet phase with the magnetization of 21 emu/g at 1.5 K and 7.2 emu/g at 300 K, which are the same as those of the bulk Bi2DyFe5O12 garnet ferrites.

Notes: Abstract Amorphous NdxFe81B19-x (0≤x≤19) alloys have been studied by57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. It is found that the average and peak hyperfine fields and the isomer shift decrease with increasing Nd content x. The magnetization for the samples containing Nd shows a strong tendency to lie in the direction perpendicular to the ribbon plane and its direction varies with Nd content.

Notes: Abstract Hybridoma SPO1 cells were immobilized in calcium alginate beads and were further grown in a fluidized-bed perfusion system with a protein-free medium. The presence of serum in the steps of entrapment was shown to be helpful for the preservation of cell viability. Each step during immobilization was investigated with respect to the extent of cell damage caused. The immobilization process using small beads caused a lower cell viability initially but allowed a higher rate of cell growth subsequently, compared to those in large beads. In a perfusion system for the continuous production of monoclonal antibodies (MAb), the viable cell density reached 2×107 cells per ml of beads with a viability of 40%. Compared with the cells in suspension culture, the immobilized SPO1 cells showed higher viable cell based specific rates of substrate uptake (glucose and glutamine) and of MAb production. A significant drop in the formation of lactate after the cell growth entered a steady state suggested a higher activity of the Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle in the cells when the cell density became high.
