    Notes: A torque converter and an electronic driver circuit are described that will generate a compensating applied torque that is equal and opposite to the frictional torque of a bearing over a range of angular velocities. The compensated bearing is effectively frictionless. The frictional torque is assumed to have a constant component and one that is proportional to the angular velocity.

    Notes: A minor population of T cells expresses a heterodimeric antigen receptor composed of y and A chains (TcR-1). In blood from adults, two subsets of Tγδ cells can be identified by the monoclonalantibodies (MoAb) BB3 and A13. Little is known about the distribution and markers of these subsets early in life. We have therefore examined both the frequencies of these cells in cord blood and their expression of the cytotoxicity-associated marker serine esterase (SK). using immunocytochemical techniques.Our data show lower percentages of TcR-1+ cells in the blood of newborns compared with that in adults. However, the ratio of the Al3+/BB3 cells was significantly higher in cord than in adult blood. Whereas virtually all the adult TcR-1+ cells in blood were SE-positive. only a small proportion of the cord blood cells earned ibis enzymes. This was; restricted lo the BB3+ Tγδ -cell subset in the cord.Our data suggest different characteristics of the TcR-1+ cells in blood from newborns compared with adult blood, and study of the functions of the different subsets, e.g. cytotoxicity. will be important in understanding their particular role in immunity.

    Notes: We have examined the frequencies of Tγδ cells in blood, synovial fluids, and synovial membranes of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and in blood from age-matched controls Immunocyto-chemical and immunohistochemical techniques were used with monoclonal antibodies BB3 and A13 to define a major and minor blood subset of Tγδ cells respectively. Together, these antibodies identify the majority (if not all) of the peripheral blood Tγδ cells.Significantly lower levels of Tγδ cells were found in the blood of RA patients compared with controls, whilst higher but not significant numbers were found in the synovial fluids or paired samples Scattered Tγδ cells were found only in some synovial membranes with A distribution similar to the Tγδ cells Analysis of the two different Tγδ -cell subsets indicated a ratio of BB3 to A13 of about 5:1 in control and RA blood. However, this ratio was less than 1:1 in the RA synovial fluids and membranes. The migratory nature of the A13+ cells could account for their predominance in these sites the possible pathological significance of these cells in the rheumatoid synovial fluid and synovial membranes is discussed.

    Notes: Summary As a step in the development of a system for assessing growth of human urothelium and transitional cell carcinoma, the growth of two established cell lines on collagen-based membranes has been evaluated. HT1080 (metastatic human fibrosarcoma) and WI38 VA13 (virus-transformed human fibroblasts) were grown on substrates of collagen, collagen/hyaluronic acid or chondroitin sulphate and reconstituted basement membrane (Matrigel). Cell growth was quantified using a new fluorimetric assay utilizing carboxyfluorescein diacetate. There were differences in morphology between cells grown on collagen and those grown on polystyrene. There were, however, no differences in growth of the WI38 VA13 cells on collagen compared with polystyrene, but growth of the HT1080 cells was increased on membranes of collagen/2:5% hyaluronic acid and collagen/5% chondroitin sulphate, and decreased on Matrigel. Adequate growth on collagen substrates is dependent on cell line. The fluorimetric assay used was suitable for quantifying cell growth on such substrates.

    Notes: Abstract PNKT-4B is an aneuploid cell line derived from a herpesvirus-induced renal adenocarcinoma of Rana pipiens that displays restricted invasion at 21°C or cooler and invasion at 23°C through 28°C. Metaphase chromosomes obtained from subcultures (passages 297; 345–347) grown at 18°C or 28°C were Giemsa stained or N-banded with acidic silver nitrate. Cells grown at 18°C displayed a modal chromosome number of 41, while 28°C cultures displayed a modal number of 40. The distribution of the chromosomes suggests that the two temperatures may be allowing growth of different subclonal populations. N-banding of chromosomes at both temperatures revealed an increase of active nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) over normal frog tissues, 2/2N. Analysis of 200 N-banded spreads from cells grown at each temperature revealed modal numbers of 9 NORs/cell and modal numbers of 6 NOR-containing chromosomes/cell. Nine specific NOR-containing chromosomes were identified and scored. Similar distributions were observed at 18°C and 28°C. The data imply that the modal number of PNKT-4B has shifted since it was first described, 39, and differs at invasion-permissive and — restrictive temperatures. Increased numbers of active NORs and alterations of NOR-containing chromosomes imply an amplification of rDNA over the amount in normal frog.

    Notes: Abstract A light gas gun was used to dynamically load models of the wall sections typical of those used in the construction of buried structures. Scaling of the loading time history is addressed, and the appropriate nondimensional parameters for the loading and the model structural characteristics are defined. Scaling is simplified by use of structural materials for the models which have a yield strength and material moduli close to those found in prototype structures. Methods for producing the desired loading by using a light gun are investigated, and reasonable accuracy and flexibility in achieving the desired loading time history is demonstrated. Experimental results are given for the loading conditions and the failure mode that occurs when the model wall section is breached. The loading conditions to produce failure in the model are reduced to nondimensional form and compared to results from prototype field tests, also in nondimensional form. The resulting nondimensional data are used to evaluate the suitability of the light gun to dynamically simulate ground shock loading as well as to investigate failure criteria.
