    Notes: Summary The Maillard protein cross-link pentosidine is a fluorescent condensation product of lysine, arginine and ribose. It accumulates in human tissues with age, and the accumulation process is accelerated in the tissues of diabetic patients. Using SP-Sephadex C-25 in the pretreatment for HPLC, we examined levels of pentosidine in urine without hydrolysis (free form) and levels of pentosidine in urine after hydrolysis (total forms), from 23 diabetic patients and 21 control subjects. The mean percentages of the values of free form per total forms (±SD) were 89±15% in diabetic patients, 88±16% in control subjects and 89±15% in total populations of diabetic patients and control subjects. There was a significant correlation between the values of free form and total forms in diabetic patients (r=0.938, p=0.0001), in control subjects (r=0.820, p〈0.02) and in total populations of diabetic patients and control subjects (r=0.951, p=0.0001). The mean level of pentosidine per mol creatinine (±SD) was significantly elevated in urine from diabetic patients as compared to the level in control subjects (8.8±4.3 μmol/mol creatinine vs 4.2±1.4 μmol/mol creatinine, p=0.0001 in free form; 10.1±5.3 μmol/mol creatinine vs 4.7±1.4 μmol/mol creatinine, p=0.0001 in total forms). These results demonstrate that urinary pentosidine, especially in free form, could be a useful marker for the assessment of diabetes and diabetic complications.

    Notes: Summary An unusual cerebral tumor is reported in a 14-year-old boy. On light and electron microscopy, the constituent cells were very complex; the majority of the neoplastic cells were primitive neuroectodermal cells dispersed in myxomatous or fibrous stroma. Neoplastic neuronal cells and hypertrophic astrocytes were also observed in these areas. The neuronal cells showed a continuous spectrum of differentiation from very primitive to mature ganglion cells. Furthermore, the tumor contained a highly cellular discrete area consisting of neuroblasts and their precursor cells. From these findings, a diagnosis of composite ganglioneuroblastoma was made.

    Notes: Abstract Life-form population responses of a centric planktonic diatom,Chaetoceros pseudocurvisetus Mangin, were investigated in summer 1986 and 1988 in the Izu Islands, Japan, in regionally upwelled water where nutrient concentration changed from favorable to unfavorable conditions for active growth and reproduction (oligotrophication). Two types of life form were observed: vegetative cells of healthy and unhealthy looking conditions and resting spores. The observed life-form responses were experimentally evaluated along with a depletion of limiting nutrients. The algal population ceased vegetative growth and initiated resting spore formation with a disappearance of limiting nitrate, and this life-form response seemed to be triggered by the decrease of cellular nitrogen content below a certain level. Since a large amount of silicon was required for the resting spore formation, a part of vegetative cells were unable to form resting spores and formed unhealthy looking vegetative cells under insufficient concentrations of silicic acid. Percentage shares of the resting spores in the population were linearly related to the amounts of available silicic acid. Vegetative cells which did not form resting spores showed greater mortality than resting spores by attack of bacteria and protozoa; however, vegetative cells could respond quickly to possible nutrient replenishment.

    Notes: Abstract The present study aimed to resolve the question why marine Synechococcus spp. abundantly occur even at the bottom of the euphotic zone in the Kuroshio are. Photosynthesis under such conditions was examined using simulated blue-green model light (BGL). Results indicated that photosynthesis of marine Synechococcus spp. under BGL is as active enough to support growth of these organisms. Examination of light-harvesting under BGL indicated that active photosynthesis is permitted by an unusually high abundance of phycoerythrin (PE), which is the main light-harvesting pigment for photosystem II (PSII), due to a phycobilisome (PBS) structure which is different from ordinary hemidiscoidals. Although the absorption maximum of PE is located at longer wavelengths than the energy maximum of BGL, PE was found to absorb BGL significantly. Thus, BGL cannot be a typical photosystem I (PSI) light. PSII is also significantly excited by BGL. Carotenoids, which largely absorb BGL, were found to be effective in light-harvesting for PSI. Based on the results obtained, possible reasons why marine Synechococcus spp. commonly occur in warm waters were discussed. Two strains of Synechococcus spp. isolated from the Gulf Stream in 1981 and from Kuroshio, Japan in 1983 were used in the present study.

    Notes: Abstract Endoscopic ultrasound was performed in 56 patients with histologically or clinically proven mediastinal or lung diseases. These 56 patients comprised 12 with sarcoidosis, 8 with lymphoma, 20 with lung cancer, 10 with oesophageal cancer, and 6 with other diseases. A 7.5 MHz electronic linear-arrayed ultrasonic endoscope was used. In 38 of the 56 patients lymph nodes were detected by endoscopic ultrasound. Eleven patients with sarcoidosis showed lymph nodes in a “facet formation” (like stones in an old stone wall), while lymph nodes in the other 27 patients were round in shape and did not form facets. The “facet formation sign”, evaluated by endoscopic ultrasound, may be a characteristic finding in sarcoidosis.

    Notes: From our high resolution REMPI threshold photoelectron measurements of jet-cooled tropolone, it has been found that no spectral doublet showing "proton tunneling'' in the cation ground state (D0) is observed within an experimental accuracy of 2 cm−1. The adiabatic ionization potential was obtained as Ia=68 365±5 cm−1.

    Notes: A mm wave amplifier experiment on a free electron laser was performed using an intense, mildly relativistic electron beam (0.7–0.9 MeV) with a combination of a focusing planar wiggler and a weak additional axial magnetic field in the so-called "group 1'' region. A beam transport ratio of over 80%, through the whole wiggler length, was realized. In an amplification experiment, a spatial growth rate of 56 dB/m was obtained at a frequency of 45 GHz, and a power saturation was observed at a level of 6 MW, where the total gain was estimated to be 52 dB. It was shown that the off-axis component of the beam contributes considerably to the rf amplification in the focusing wiggler.

    Notes: The most frustrating type of head crash is one that wipes out data on one track after thousands of hours of stable operation. Analysis of debris gives few clues as to its cause. This paper explains this type of head crash and identifies the liquefaction of organic gases on the taper section of the head slider as its primary cause. Both theoretical considerations and experimental results are presented.
