Notes: Boron nitride films prepared by reactive ion plating from a boron evaporation source were characterized structurally using three independent electron optical techniques: energy filtered electron diffraction with radial distribution function analysis; electron energy-loss spectroscopy of the near-edge structure of the boron K edge; and spectroscopy of the plasmon region of the energy-loss spectrum. Both specimens had a graded BNx layer between the BN layer and the silicon substrate and in addition one specimen had a titanium bonding layer underneath the BNx layer. The presence of c-BN in both specimens was confirmed by all techniques. The specimen with the titanium bonding layer was examined in cross section and showed essentially pure c-BN on the surface. A model for the formation of c-BN assisted by the compressive stress generated during deposition is proposed.

Notes: The long-time behavior of charged particles in plasma turbulence with uniform broad wave spectrum is studied numerically. The diffusivity of the particle velocity distribution is characterized by the quasilinear nature for extended time, while a transient diffusion precedes with the enhanced nonquasilinear diffusion rate when resonance overlapping is relatively weak. The observed long-time quasilinear diffusion coefficient eventually decreases due to the finiteness of the resonance region. The transient-type diffusion is revealed only by the higher-order numerical calculation.

Notes: A simple method for obtaining higher-order solutions of a solitary wave is presented. The method is based on the higher-order approximation of the reductive perturbation method. As a model equation, the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation with fifth-order dispersion term is employed and higher-order solutions are obtained. In the case of ion-acoustic solitary wave, the fourth-order solution is given explicitly and is compared with numerical solutions. The fourth-order solution is shown to be valid if a normalized wave amplitude is less than 0.5.

Notes: A compact interferometer using a grating beamsplitter is reported. The phase of the interference signal was adjusted by using the moire effect of the gratings, so that a small optical path difference was compensated precisely by the magnified displacement of the grating. The optical system was analyzed theoretically on the basis of the Fourier optics. For the interferometric measurement in the microscopic region, a compact optical system was assembled from the microscopic objective and the 25-μm gratings. The characteristics of the proposed interferometer were investigated in the measurements of film thickness, piezoelectric vibration, and photoacoustic effect.

Notes: Nitrogen-containing carbon films where deposited by reactive ion plating under a pure nitrogen ambient. Knoop hardness, microindentation hardness, and microscratch hardness of these films were evaluated. Indentation hardness, such as Knoop hardness and microindentation hardness, is influenced by surface roughness and substrate hardness, so the effect of nitrogen inclusion on the hardness cannot be clearly evaluated. In contrast, an atomic force microscope can clearly evaluate the effect of nitrogen inclusion on scratched wear depth. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We examined the change in photoluminescence spectra of porous Si when it is oxidized then deoxidized chemically. After both steps, photoluminescence shifted to higher frequencies and increased in intensity. These shifts to higher frequencies indicate the photoluminescence is a result of the quantum size effect. Moreover, the increase in photoluminescence intensity after oxidation suggests that termination by hydrogen on the porous Si surface does not always play a key role in the photoluminescence mechanism.

Notes: In this letter, a variant of scanning force microscope for detecting attractive forces is reported. The force gradients of the attractive forces acting in two orthogonal directions were detected simultaneously from the resonant frequency shifts of a cantilever oscillating in two directions. Using the fine electrode sample, the distributions of the electrostatic forces acting in lateral and vertical directions were visualized separately.

Notes: Despite light and electron microscopic and histochemical studies, there is no consensus on the cellular differentiation of eccrine spiradenoma. In the present study, eight specimens of eccrine spiradenoma were analysed by immunohistochemical techniques, using a panel of monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratins. Two types of epithelial cells were identified in tumour nodules: large, pale epithelial cells in the centre, and small, dark epithelial cells situated at the periphery. These nodules frequently contained tubular structures lined by cuboidal, columnar or, less commonly, flattened epithelial cells. Cytokeratin expression in eccrine spiradenoma was compared with expression in normal eccrine glands. Immunohistochemistry revealed that large, pale epithelial cells expressed immunophenotypes similar to those of luminal cells in the transitional portions between the secretory portions and the coiled ducts. The small, dark cells expressed immunophenotypes similar to those of basal cells in the transitional portions. Tubular structures observed in eccrine spiradenoma showed staining patterns similar to those of the luminal cells in the transitional portions. Eccrine spiradenoma may, therefore, differentiate towards the transitional portions between the secretory portions and colled ducts of eccrine glands. Some of the large, pale epithelial cells in eccrine spiradenoma differentiate towards tubular structures, forming a lumen lined by a cuticle.

Notes: The expression of cytokeratins and involucrin varies greatly in different epithelia, and this raises the possibility that detailed analysis of these epidermal proteins might provide a means of identifying various skin tumours. The present study was conducted to determine the immunohistochemical distribution of cytokeratins and involucrin in calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe, in order to elucidate the nature and differentiation of this tumour. To correlate the immunohistochemical profile with the most frequest histological patterns, we categorized the basophilic, transitional, shadow, and squamoid cells, and the shreds of keratin. Comparative studies with normal skin showed that the shadow and transitional cells corresponded to hair cortex cells, the squamoid cells to the outer root sheath, the basophilic cells adjacent to the stroma to the outermost cell layer of the outer root sheath between the lower permanent portion and upper transient portion of the follicles, and the basophilic cells adjacent to the transitional cells to the hair matrix. The expression of cytokeratins in most shreds of keratin was similar to that in squamoid cells. Calcifying epithelioma was, therefore, shown to be composed of tumour cells differentiating into both the hair cortex and outer root sheath. These tumour cells were differentiated from basophilic cells, which showed the same staining patterns as the outermost cell layer of the outer root sheath between the lower permanent portion and upper transient portion of the hair follicles, supporting the hypothesis that the keratinocytes in the outermost cell layer can differentiate into the transitional portion of the follicle and anagen hair.

Notes: In a multicenter study of the effects of tetracycline (TC) fiber therapy, subgingival plaque samples were tested for 6 probable periodontal pathogens by DNA probe analysis. Levels of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Eikenella corrodens, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas (Bacteroides) gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia (Bacteroides intermedius), and Wolinella recta were quantitatively determined in samples taken at baseline, and immediately after TC fiber removal, control fiber removal, and scaling and root planing. At untreated sites, samples were taken at baseline and 10 d later. Specificity of the DNA probe method was evaluated by testing the hybridization to 83 reference cultures. Interaction of the F. nucleatum probe with Fusobacterium periodonticum, and of the W. recta probe with Wolinella curva were the only cross-hybridizations noted. Species were detected at an average sensitivity of 2.9 × 104 organisms per sample. Approximately 70% of sites were initially infected with P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum; 50% with P. intermedia and E. corrodens; infections with W. recta and A. actinomycetemcomitans were less common (36% and 11% respectively). The average numbers of organisms found in plaque samples were highest for F. nucleatum, P. gingivalis, and P. intermedia (ca. 106). E. corrodens, W. recta, and A. actinomycetemcomitans occurred at 10-fold lower levels. Bacterial numbers and proportions of species in subgingival sites from the five centers did not differ appreciably. Both TC fiber therapy and scaling decreased the number of sites infected with all the monitored species. The bacterial composition at untreated sites and at sites where control fibers were placed was not significantly altered. The percentage reduction of the number of sites with delectable infection varied with each species: from 86% with W. recta to approximately 40% with P. gingivalis. Significant reduction of pocket depth and bleeding occurred at TC fiber-treated sites infected with each of the species. Significant attachment level gain occurred only at sites initially infected with P. gingivalis and treated with TC fibers.
