Notes: We have investigated the relationship between the microstructures and pinning forces by measuring the magnetic-field dependence and angular dependence of Jc in several kinds of YBCO thin films having different microstructures. A high-Jc value was kept even when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to the film plane in the case of a c-axis-oriented film which was studded with a-axis-oriented grains. The boundaries between the a-axis-oriented grain and the c-axis-oriented grain are considered to be effective as pinning centers.

Notes: Summary The neuropathological findings in a 13-year-old Japanese male showing decrease of sialidase and β-galactosidase activities are reported. The patient was the product of normal pregnancy to consanguineous parents. He started to sit at 8 months, stand at 20 months and walk at the age of 2; mental retardation, visual disturbance, cerebellar ataxia, myoclonus and epilepsy developed by the age of 10, and he died at 13. Neuropathological investigation revealed neuronal loss and storage. Severe loss of neurons was observed in the thalamus, globus pallidus, lateral geniculate body, gracile nucleus, Purkinje and retinal ganglion cells. Marked ballooning was seen in the Betz cells and neurons in the basal forebrain, the motor neurons in the cranial nerve nuclei and spinal cord, and in the trigeminal and spinal ganglia. The storage material varied in staining from region to region and from neuron to neuron. Electron microscopic investigation revealed a variety of intracytoplasmic and intranuclear inclusions: membranous cytoplasmic bodies, parallel, wavy-lamellar or tortuous tubular structures, lipofuscin-like irregular-shaped pleomorphic bodies, and cytoplasmic vacuoles with fine granules and lamellar materials. The severity of the neuronal loss did not seem to correlate with the amount of the storage materials, but with the presence of tortuous tubular inclusion.

Notes: Summary Aplysianin-A, an antibacterial and antineoplastic factor in the albumen gland of the sea hareAplysia kurodai, was isolated. It had a molecular weight of approximately 320 kD and consisted of subunits with a molecular weight of 85 kD. It contained 9.8% neutral sugar. Aplysianin A showed 50% inhibition ofBacillus subtilis growth at a concentration of 4 μg protein/ml and 50% lysis of murine MM46 tumor cells at 14 ng protein/ml. A partial identity of antigenic specificity of the purified specimen with an antineoplastic factor fromAplysia eggs was observed in immunodiffusion tests.

Notes: Abstract Endoscopic ultrasound was performed in 56 patients with histologically or clinically proven mediastinal or lung diseases. These 56 patients comprised 12 with sarcoidosis, 8 with lymphoma, 20 with lung cancer, 10 with oesophageal cancer, and 6 with other diseases. A 7.5 MHz electronic linear-arrayed ultrasonic endoscope was used. In 38 of the 56 patients lymph nodes were detected by endoscopic ultrasound. Eleven patients with sarcoidosis showed lymph nodes in a “facet formation” (like stones in an old stone wall), while lymph nodes in the other 27 patients were round in shape and did not form facets. The “facet formation sign”, evaluated by endoscopic ultrasound, may be a characteristic finding in sarcoidosis.

Notes: Abstract We have prepared a new material for embolisation: ethylene vinylacetate copolymer dissolved in polyvinyl alcohol. When in contact with blood, polyvinyl alcohol rapidly becomes a soft gel, which is accompanied by wedging of the ethylene vinylacetate copolymer. We analysed the histopathology of intra-arterial microemboli in rats, after intracarotid injection of this material. We confirmed that it was applicable to embolisation for neurosurgical treatment.

Notes: Summary Naphthylethylurea multiple-bonded chiral stationary phases prepared for the optimal resolution of p-bromophenylcarbamyl derivatives of enantiomeric amino acids are examined from the viewpoint of information theory. The criterion used is the function of mutual information (FUMI) which describes the precision of analysis as a function of peak shape (area and width), overlap and noise level. The length of the polyethyleneamine spacer in the chiral stationary phases is evaluated by the precision (FUMI) calculated from the peak shape and overlap. The best column is defined as the one which gives the highest precision. The temperature effect on the precision is also examined.

Notes: A micro high-performance liquid chromatographic (micro-HPLC) method was developed for the determination of purpurea glycoside A, purpurea glycoside B, and glucogitaloxin in Digitalis purpurea leaves. The extract of dry leaf powder was applied to a Sep-Pak silica cartridge followed by preparative thin-layer chromatography prior to micro-HPLC analysis. The analysis was performed on an ODS micro column, using acetonitrile-methanol-water (21:20:45) and ultraviolet detection (220 nm). The amounts of purpurea glycoside A, purpurea glycoside B, and glucogitaloxin per 100 mg of dry leaf powder were estimated to be 52.6, 50.7, and 108.6 μg, respectively.

Notes: The taxonomic status of various species of Dekkera, Brettanomyces and Eeniella was examined by electrophoretic comparison of enzymes, by deoxyribonucleic acid homology and by physiological characterization. These studies demonstrated that two teleomorphic Dekkera species, D. anomala and D. bruxellensis (Synonym. D. intermedia), and four anamorphic Brettanomyces species, B. anomalus (synonym B. claussenii), B. bruxellensis (synonym B. abstinens, B. custersii, B. Intermedius, B. lambicus), B. custersianus and B. naardenesis, can be recognized. The anamorphic genus Eeniella remained as a separate, monotypic taxon.
