    Notes: Summary The effect of cimetidine and ranitidine on the demethylation of imipramine (IMI) and on the hydroxylation of desmethylimipramine (DMI) was studied in microsomes from four human livers. Cimetidine inhibited both demethylation of IMI and 2-hydroxylation of DMI, whilst the effect of ranitidine was not statistically significant. 2-hydroxylation of DMI is probably mediated by debrisoquine hydroxylase, a cytochrome P-450 isozyme that is monogenically controlled. The results suggest that cimetidine inhibits this enzyme.

    Notes: Particle size effects on magnetic properties of BaFe12−2xTixCoxO19 fine particles were investigated. Saturation magnetization of these particles decreased with decreasing particle size. This result can be explained with the existence of a nonmagnetic thin layer, several angstroms in thickness, on the surface of the particles. Particle size dependence of coercivity for these particles, below 1000 A(ring) in size, follows the superparamagnetism theory. For the decrease in coercivity above 2000 A(ring), multidomain nucleation is inferred as one of the possible mechanisms. Particle shape dependence of coercivity is well explained with the coherent rotation model, considering shape anisotropy.

    Notes: Abstract A solid and cystic tumor of the pancreas in a 10-year-old girl was removed completely by pancreatectomy. Immunohistochemical and electron microscopic examinations disclosed acinar cell origin. Thirteen collected cases of these tumors in children whose diagnoses were confirmed by histochemistry and electron microscopy were reviewed. More conservative surgery may be recommended because of their benign nature.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ein neues Operationsverfahren zur Wiederherstellung des Larynx nach totaler Laryngektomie wurde entwickelt. Die postop. Stimme war ebenso gut wie nach Asais Laryngoplastik. Die Aspiration von Flüssigkeit in die Trachea war nur geringfügig. Das Operationsverfahren des Verfassers ist im folgenden zusammengefaßt: 1. Die lateralen Hälften der Schildknorpelplatten werden auf beiden Seiten belassen; 2. die hintere Larynxwand wird mit Hilfe deroberen Schildknorpelhörner gestaltet; 3. die Innenfläche des wiederaufgebauten Larynx wird mit Stiellappen aus der Hypopharynxschleimhaut gedeckt; 4. der wiederhergestellte Larynx wird am Zungengrund fest vernäht. Dieses Verfahren wurde in 12 Fällen mit ausgedehntem inneren Kehlkopfkrebs durchgeführt. In 3 Fällen trat eine Verzögerung der Heilung durch Entwicklung einer Pharynxfistel nach der Operation ein. Alle Patienten gewannen ihre Stimme und Schluckbewegung wieder.
    Notes: Summary A new procedure is described for the surgical reconstruction of the larynx following total laryngectomy. Postoperatively, the voice was as good as that resulting from the procedure of Asai. Aspiration of fluid into the trachea was minimal. The procedure may be briefly summarized as follows: 1. The lateral portion (about one-half of the total) of both thyroid cartilages are left in situ; 2. a posterior laryngeal wall is fashioned from the superior horns of the same cartilages; 3. the inner surface of the reconstructed larynx is lined by mucosal flaps from the hypopharynx; and 4. the reconstructed larynx is firmly sutured to the base of the tongue. This procedure was employed in twelve cases with extensive internal laryngeal carcinoma. In three of them, healing was retarded by the formation of postoperative pharyngeal fistulae. All patients regained their voices and their abilities to swallow.

    Notes: Abstract The4He( $$\vec d$$ ,pα)n cross section, vector and tensor analyzing-power data with 12 and 17 MeV deuterons at kinematic conditions including proton-alpha quasifree scattering, neutron-alpha and proton-alpha final-state interactions, as well as collinearity, are compared with the predictions of the three-body model using different nucleon-alpha and neutron-proton forces. In general, better two-body potentials give a better fit to the data, except for the vector analyzing-power data. The roles of the impulse and multiple-scattering amplitudes are studied to understand the sensitivity to two-body potentials and to understand the reason for the successes and the failures of the model.

    Notes: Abstract The $$D(\vec p,p)D$$ elastic scattering was investigated especially in the Coulomb sensitive scattering regions. Angular distributions of the differential cross section and of the analyzing powerA y, with emphasis on small scattering angles, were measured at 10.0 and 14.1 MeV. For extreme backward angles up toJ c.m.=179° the differential cross section was measured at 12.0, 14.1 and 16.5 MeV. The data have been compared with recent Faddeev calculations based on the realistic meson-exchange Paris potential and including an approximate Coulomb correction. There are discrepancies between the data and the calculations especially for the analyzing power. This indicates that the approximate treatment of Coulomb effects and possibly also the purely nuclear part of the calculations need to be improved.

    Notes: Abstract The three-body Faddeev equations for neutron-deuteron scattering are solved in the energy region from 2.5 MeV to 50 MeV of the incident neutron energy with small energy steps. Higher-rank separable potentials are used in the1 s 0 wave and in the3 s 1—3 d 1 waves, while rank-1 separable potentials are used in1 p 1,3 p 0,1,2 1 d 2 3 d 2,3 waves. The calculation is compared with experiments for the total cross section, the total break-up cross section, the differential cross section and the analyzing power of neutron-deuteron scattering. The improvements in the agreement as compared to previous calculations are impressive in many cases. Especially, the calculated total cross section agrees with the experiment below 30 MeV within the error bars, which are as small as 1%. A discussion on the numerical accuracy is given. General aspects of the calculated cross section are discussed. It is pointed out that thes-wave asymptotic normalization of the deuteron wave function (A s ) is important.

    Notes: Abstract High-accuracy analyzing-powerA y(θ) data forn-d elastic scattering at 12 MeV have been measured using the polarized-neutron facilities at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The present data have been combined with our previousn-d measurements at 10, 12, and 14.1 MeV to form the highest-accuracyA y(θ) data set forn-d elastic scattering below 20 MeV. These data are compared to recent Faddeev-based neutron-deuteron (n-d) calculations which use the Paris and Bonn equivalent separable potentials PEST and BEST, as well as Doleschall's representation of theP- andD-wave nucleon-nucleon interactions. None of these models adequately describe the data in the angular region around the maximum ofA y(θ). Possible reasons for the discrepancies are discussed. The sensitivity of the present Faddeev-based calculations to various angular momentum components of the nucleon-nucleon interaction are examined.
