Notizen: Abstract The magnetostriction (MS) of REBa2Cu3O7−δ (RE=Y, Nd, Eu, Gd, Ho, Er, Yb) is reported as a function of magnetic field and temperature forH〈5 T and 1.5〈T〈40 K. With nonmagnetic rare earths the MS is small and a linear function of the field atH〉1 T. The MS is much larger when the rare earth carries a magnetic moment, as usual, but the volume MS observed with moment carrying REBa2Cu3O7−δ is larger than that of nonsuperconducting intermetalics. This effect is explained by the shielding currents which are induced by the 4f magnetic moments in the superconducting CuO-lattice. The thermal expansion of GdBa2Cu3O7−δ shows a large peak at the ordering temperature of 2.2 K in both the superconducting and the nonsuperconducting samples.

Notizen: The reaction of electronically excited Na(3P) atoms with HCl has been studied in a crossed molecular beams experiment. At collision energies slightly above the endoergicity of the reaction, Na(3P) shows a dramatic enhancement of reactivity over ground state Na(3S). Detailed measurements of the laboratory angular and velocity distributions of the reactively scattered NaCl product at 5.4 kcal/mol collision energy have allowed determination of the product center-of-mass translational and angular distributions. These experimental results are compared to the DIPR model of electron transfer reactions. The broad translational energy distribution is in qualitative agreement with the DIPR model, but the angular distribution exhibits reduced intensity for scattering perpendicular to the relative velocity vector which cannot be reproduced by the DIPR model. The preferred transition state configuration, Na–Cl–H, is consistent with what would be predicted by a diffuse 3P orbital where the Na atom appears ion-like. This configuration is opposite to that given by the dominant term in the long range multipolar expansion of the neutral reactant potential.

Notizen: Using histochemical methods, morphofunctional aspects of the alimentary tract of larval coregonids were investigated. Larvae of Coregonus lavaretus were reared for 34 days with either zooplankton or one of two dry diets. Ontogeny, localization and diet-related modifications of the following enzymes were examined: trypsin (luminal digestion), aminopeptidase, maltase, alkaline phosphatase (brush border-bound digestion) and unspecific esterase (intracellular nutrient processing). All of the enzymes studied were present in 13-day-old larvae. Except for the intracellularly located unspecific esterase, there was an ontogenetic enhancement of enzyme staining intensities accompanied by a significant increase in the volume of the intestinal mucosa. Enzyme activities differed within and between intestinal regions. This finding suggests that a spatial gradient of nutrient breakdown and absorption already exists in the morphologically and physiologically incompletely developed digestive system of larval coregonids. Digestive enzyme activities were modified in response to the dietary regimen. There was no obvious correlation between enzymic response and growth performance of the larvae.

Notizen: Psychological time—as distinct from physical time—divides the past from the future by means of the experienced present and serves as a frame of reference for objects, events, actions, and persons. There are cases when our understanding of objects and events gains in depth with every additional time dimension, until we are able to arrange all the data in a meaningful sequence ranging from the past through the present to the future across time. A description of city traffic when confined to the present is one step towards analysing special problems and understanding congestion in certain areas. The historical development of the city offers additional insight into the evolution of bottlenecks, while current changes, made by the municipal authorities, can only be understood in connection with a long-term development plan. A lecturer on town planning will, therefore, offer his audience a more profound understanding of the subject by combining a description of the visible present with a causal explanation of the past and a teleological account of future projects.

Notizen: Abstract We isolated from Candida maltosa mutants lacking saccharopine reductase (lys9) and saccharopine dehydrogenase (lys1). They accumulated α-aminoadipate-δ-semialdehyde (AASA) in the cell and excreted it into the culture medium. In the presence of 15 g glucose/l, 1.25 g NH4H2PO4/l and 50 mg l-lysine/l in a minimal salt medium C. maltosa G285 (lys1) produced about 80–90 mg AASA/l within 48 h. It is the first report of lysine-requiring yeast mutants that accumulate and excrete AASA. In contrast, Pichia guilliermondii lys9 mutants lacked this AASA overproduction. The AASA accumulation by C. maltosa mutants may be explained by the low feedback regulation of their homocitrate synthase and the equilibrium of the enzyme reactions involved in the lysine biosynthesis.

Notizen: Abstract A novel aminotransferase catalysing the first step of lysine catabolism, the oxidative transamination of the ?-group of L-lysine, was found and characterised in the yeast Pichia guilliermondii. The enzyme, L-lysine : pyruvate aminotransferase (Lys-AT), is strongly derepressed in cells grown on L-lysine as sole nitrogen source and its activity is highly specific for both L-lysine and pyruvate. We could successfully isolate a regulatory mutant which is unable to use lysine as sole nitrogen source based on its inability to derepress the Lys-AT.
