    Notizen: A biochemical procedure is described to purify the T-cell mitogen in the supernatant of cultured Mycoplasma arthritidis organisms. The mitogenic material was bound on an affigel blue column. The eluate of this column was then acylated at 0°C for 1.5 h and subsequently chromatography on a Sepharose C1 6B and a Superose 12HR column were performed. SDS-PAGE showed a major band at MW 26,000 and some minor bands at 50,000. With this material biological tests were performed, including induction of lymphoproliferation and interferon induction in murine spleen cell cultures. Purified Mycoplasma arthritidis supernatant (MAS) vigorously stimulated spleen cell cultures of A/J, CBA, C3H/He, and DBA/2 mice, whereas a low-grade hut definitive response was observed in C57BL/6 spleen cells. Cultures of Balb/c nu/nu mice, in contrast to those of their euthymic littermates, were non-reactive. When induction of interferon was tested, a marked response to purified MAS was observed in CBA and C3H/HeJ spleen cell cultures, whereas C57BL/6 spleen cells were non-reactive.

    Notizen: Abstract The total photofission cross section σγ,F for235U and238U has been measured in the energy range 50≤E γ≤800 MeV at the 855 MeV Mainz Microtron MAMI using energy and time tagged photons (Glasgow Tagger) and a 4π arrangement of position sensitive fragment detectors. Besides the absolute photofission cross section σγF , which almost completely exhausts the total photon absorption cross section for these nuclei, fragment mass distributions in this energy domain were determined via time of flight techniques (TOF). The results for the total photofission cross sections σγ,F normalized to the atomic numberA for both isotopes coincide, and agree in theΔ-resonance region, within the systematic errors, with the socalled“Universal Curve” σγ,T /A of the total photon absorption cross section σγ,T . At higher energies the cross sections exhibit a smooth behaviour. In particular, it is shown for the first time that there isno resonance-like shape near the D13 resonance (at ≈710 MeV) as observed for the free proton. This complete suppression of the D13 resonance in complex nuclei is not yet understood on a microscopic level. The fragment mass distributions show a predominantly mass symmetric fission. However, contributions from mass asymmetric fission at some photon energies may give a hint of an increased mass asymmetric fission after the onset of the pion and two pion channels.

    Notizen: Zusammenfassung 1. Die Granula Muchs sind für eine günstige Prognosestellung bei der Lungentuberkulose nicht verwertbar. 2. Sie stehen in engem Abhängigkeitsverhältnis zu den säurefesten Tuberkelbazillen: ohne säurefeste Bazillen auch keine Muchschen Formen. Deshalb sind alle Fälle von Lungentuberkulose, bei denen Muchsche Formen gefunden werden, als offene und in prognostischer Hinsicht als vorsichtiger zu beurteilende Fälle anzusehen. 3. Die Granula Muchs können sich aus mehr als 5, bis zu 9 Körnern zusammensetzen, desgleichen können den säurefesten Tuberkelbazillen nach der Gram-Färbung mehr als 7, bis zu 9 Körner eingelagert sein. 4. Entstehung der Muchschen Formen scheint sowohl durch Austreten der Körner aus dem Bazillenleib, als auch durch sukzessiven Untergang des säurefesten Leibes möglich zu sein.

    Notizen: Abstract A new type of CO2-laser with high-power capability is described. It employs fast axial flow driven by a high-frequency radial impeller. Due to the coaxial design which integrates discharge tube, blower, and gas cooler into a single cylindrical housing, a very compact laser unit is realized. The discharge is rf excited (13.56 MHz). With a specific input power of 21 W/cm3 an output of 800 W is generated at an efficiency of 16%. The discharge can easily be operated in a pulsed mode with frequencies up to 10 kHz.

    Notizen: Abstract We evaluated 49 paired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples of 35 patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) for laboratory evidence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The patients were grouped according to clinical criteria as probable CMV encephalitis/polyradiculomyelitis, CMV retinitis, cerebral toxoplasmosis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, HIV-1-related cognitive/motor complex, HIV-1-associated myelopathy, and other neurological diseases. Paired CSF and serum samples were analysed for CMV deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), quantitative intrathecal synthesis of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies specific for recombinant phosphoprotein 150 (pp150) of CMV and CMV-specific serum IgM. Intrathecal synthesis of pp150-specific IgG was detected in 26% of patients (9/35), serum IgM was found in 23% of patients (8/35), and PCR of CSF was positive in 11% of patients (4/35). Detection of CMV-specific DNA in CSF preceded the intrathecal antibody synthesis in three patients for whom serial samples were available. PCR results of the CSF became negative in one patient with CMV polyradiculomyelitis after successful therapy with 9-[2-hydroxy-l(hydroxymethyl) ethoxymethyl] guanine (DHPG). PCR has a higher diagnostic specificity in the acute phase of CMV infection than intrathecal antibody synthesis. The serum IgM response to CMV cannot be used to monitor a compartmentalized immune response in the central nervous system while an intrathecal immune response seems to be associated with recovery either spontaneously or as a result of treatment.
