    Notes: Abstract The large lead-zinc deposits of Middle Proterozoic age in northern Australia occur in sediments interpreted as having been deposited under saline, shallow-emergent conditions. Significant alkaline diagenesis is evident from the presence of abundant K-feldspar and locally albite. Alkali element compositions clearly distinguish the sediments of the mineralised shallow-emergent locations both from those of more permanent water cover (lacustrine or lagoonal), and from those close to basin margins. The key variables for identifying the geochemical contrasts are the levels of K, Rb and Na, and the ratios of K : Al and K : Rb. These geochemical parameters can be used in conjunction with the levels of the target and indicator elements to detect whether mineralisation may be present in a favourable geological environment. Two case studies of the application of whole rock geochemistry in base metal exploration are given for the Glyde River Sub-basin (McArthur Basin) and the Western Succession, Mt Isa Block.

    Notes: Otoliths of eels recaptured up to 5 years after tagging were used for comparative work on the determination of annual ring patterns. It was possible to locate false annuli caused by the tagging procedure and subsequently to define annual rings in otoliths within the known period between first tagging and final catch. This determination gave an estimate of the size of the annual zones. Growth depression caused by tagging could be shown in cross sections of otoliths. Well defined annulus patterns in micrographs of otoliths from tagged eels were compared with otoliths from untagged eels. This comparison allowed a dimensional calibration of the ageing method and the recognition of misleading additional rings. Mean annual length increments of 47.88 mm and Lx, of 123.3 mm were determined.

    Notes: From May to October 1983 the migration of six adult bream was examined by long-term ultrasonic tagging experiments. Two different migration types were observed: diurnal rhythmical migrations between the littoral and pelagic zones, and sporadic locomotions such as spontaneous excursions of several kilometers distance. At night, during their sojourn in the shallow littoral zone, bream feed intensively on benthic organisms; during their stay in the pelagic areas they presumably feed on zooplankton. Sporadic changes of place enable the bream to feed on locally abundant food resources. During the spawning season, migration contributes to successful spawning.

    Notes: Summary Rare earth metal cations are antibacterially synergistic with anionic surfactants, yielding mixtures that have bactericidal activity against a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria at minimum concentrations ranging from 16 to 125 μg/ml. Uptake of surfactant byEscherichia coli increases in the presence of lanthanum, suggesting that the role of rare earth metal cations is to reduce the net negative surface charge on the bacteria, thereby increasing the affinity between the negatively charged surfactant and the bacterial surface.

    Notes: Abstract To determine the short-term reproducibility of bone mass calculations with dual photon absorptiometry of the lumbar spine (L2–L4), duplicate measurements in healthy subjects were used. Three different methods for selection of region of interest were compared: a rectangular region with variable height and width, an irregular region to be drawn freely by the operator and the standard calculation software supplied with the bone densitometer. Contributions of changes in size and location of the region of interest on calculated bone mineral mass were also investigated. An increase in height of the region by 2 scan lines caused an increase in bone mineral content (BMC) of 8.4%±1.8%. Enlargement in width by 2 pixels in each scan line caused an increase in BMC of 2.5%±1.3%. The difference between these region of interest changes was significant (P0.0005). The use of a rectangular region, optimized to enclose L2–L4 in each person but of the same size in both measurements, resulted in a reproducibility of 1.4% and 0.7% respectively for 2 observers, with an inter observer variation of 1.2%. The reproducibility of the duplicate measurements was worse for the other methods of region of interest selection. A further series of duplicate DPA measurements in normal subjects, but with a standard meal between the measurements, showed a larger variation in the results. Again the reproducibility of the calculations using the rectangular region was better than with the other methods, with much less inter observer variation. These data suggest that calculation of dual photon absorptiometry results with a constant region of interest is preferred for the detection of small changes in lumbar bone mass.

    Notes: Abstract In an effort to understand the mechanism of collagenase activation in inflammation, human peripheral neutrophils were isolated and incubated with the tumor promoter, phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), which induces the neutrophils to degranulate and secrete proteinases. Neutrophil media were then treated with HOCl with or without various proteinase inhibitors then collagenase activity was measured. Added HOCl was able to activate latent collagenase. However, a serine proteinase, cathepsin G, was found to be necessary for collagenase activation to occur by HOCl. The results indicate that cathepsin G is a key mediator in neutrophil collagenase activation and that HOCl under certain conditions leads to the activation of cathepsin G or the stimulation of cathepsin G's ability to activate neutrophil collagenase.

    Notes: Abstract Low-temperature measurements of the thermal conductivity κ (0.3K≦T≦5K) and of the specific heatC (0.07K≦T≦3.5K) of splat-cooled amorphous superconducting Zr0.67Ni0.33(T c ≈2.7K) after different annealing stages are reported. κ increases progressively (up to 55%) after annealing. An analysis of κ with the help of normal-state measurements belowT c in an overcritical field shows that the phonon-electron scattering remains unaltered after annealing. Hence the increase in κ must be entirely attributed to structure-induced (“intrinsic”) scattering, i.e. by two-level tunneling states (TLS) at low temperatures (T≦1K). The specific heat shows a small decrease aboveT c (by 8%) which is attributed to a small diminution of the electronic density of states at the Fermi level and to a small increase in the Debye temperature. ForT≪T c where TLS dominate, the specific heatC decreases less upon annealing than expected from the increase of κ in the standard tunneling model. This points to a change in the TLS relaxation time spectrum upon annealing, as observed previously for Zr x Cu1−x glasses.

    Notes: Abstract Icosahedral (I) Pd0.588U0.206Si0.206 can be obtained from melt-spun amorphous (A) ribbons by annealing. The specific heatC (measured betweenT=0.1 K and 20 K) shows very similar behavior for both phases. The main features ofC are as follows. (i) The vibrational heat capacityC ph dominatesC at highT.C ph is almost identical in both phases, in agreement with recent inelastic neutron scattering data. (ii) Shallow maxima in (C−C ph)/T vs.T are found at 5.4 and 4.3 K forI andA phases, respectively, associated with magnetic order. These maxima are suppressed by ≈20% in an applied magnetic field of 6 T. (iii) A large quasi-linear contribution is observed with a low-T coefficient γ=165 mJ/mole U K2 for theI phase and γ=120 mJ/mole U K2 for theA phase. In the low-T region,C is hardly affected by a field of 6 T. This hints at the formation of a narrow 5f band with a comparable density of states for bothI andA phases.
