Notes: Abstract The raw extracts of a series of microorganisms were screened for the presence of acetyl-coenzyme A: arylamine N-acetyltransferase (AAAT) using a radioactive assay with 3H-acetyl-coenzyme A and aniline as substrates. Enzyme activities were primarily detected in the soluble fractions of Bacillus and Nocardia species, and in some further soil organisms. Only strains of Bacillus cereus were able to acetylate 4-nitroaniline and 3,5-dimethyl-4-nitroaniline. The fermentation conditions for the production of the enzyme were optimized. The AAAT from one strain of Bacillus cereus was purified 24-fold and characterized.

Notes: Summary Rats with standardized burns and skin excision wounds were treated i.p. with human fibronectin or swine skin gelatin. Controls received bovine albumin, solvent, or no treatment. Wound healing was assessed by planimetry, additionally plasma fibronectin was determined. Solvent or albumin did not influence the healing process, neither did fibronectin. However, when opsonizing fibronectin was additionally consumed by application of gelatin, a significant retardation of wound healing was observed. The results support the opinion that fibronectin is of essential importance for post-traumatic opsonization of gelatin-like material originating from the damaged tissue.

Notes: Summary About 100 years after Morton's first elective appendectomy, it is still desirable to achieve greater accuracy in the diagnosis of appendicitis and thus avoid unnecessary laparotomies. A prospective study of 75 patients evaluated the common diagnostic tests and variables (e.g. sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values) in patients' histories. Thecombined presence of 〉 10,000 leukocytes/gmm and nausea was found to be most valuable: (sensitivity, 83% ; specificity, 87% ; positive predictive value, 77%). Of only six incorrectly diagnosed cases, five still required operative therapy for other conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Anion Constitutions of Aqueous Tetra-n-propylammonium and Tetraethylammonnium Silicate SolutionsThe constitution of the silicate anions present in 0.1 M to 3 M tetrapropylammonium-(TPA-) and tetraethylammonium-(TEA-)silicate solutions with molar TPA/Si ratios of 3, 1 and 0.6 and TEA/Si ratios of 3 and 1 is investigated by means of trimethylsilylation. Up to 16 different oligomeric silicate anions are detected and estimated quantitively. Type and quantitative dis-tribution of the silicate anions are very similar in diluted 0.1 M TEA- and TPA-silicate solutions. Concentrated TEA-silicate solutions contain preferably Si6O156- anions whereas concentrated TPA-silicate solutions are characterized by a broad distribution of different oligomeric silicate anions. The anion distribution of TPA- and TEA -silicate solutions is compared with the results of tetramethyl- and tetrabutylammonium silicate solutions studied previously.

Description / Table of Contents: [(CH3)3Si]14Si7O21  -  A New Cyclic Silicic Acid Trimethylsilyl EsterA new silicic acid trimethylsilyl ester was obtained by trimethylsilylation of barium chloride silicate 2 BaO · 3 BaCl2 · 2 SiO2. The ester was investigated by capillary gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, 29Si n.m.r. spectroscopy, and thinlayer chromatography and was found to be a cycloheptasilicic acid trimethylsilyl ester (tetradecakis-trimethylsiloxicyclohepta siloxane) of the formula [(CH3)3Si]14Si7O21. The application of the new compound as a standard substance is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Structure of Ill-crystallized Calcium Hydrogen Silicates. VII. Solid State 29Si N.M.R. Studies on C—S—H(Di, Poly)High-resolution solid-state MAS 29Si n.m.r. studies prove that C—S—H(Di, Poly) contains end and middle group SiO4 tetrahedra (di- and polysilicate) only. Further on it is shown that the ratio of OH groups linked to polysilicate to such linked to disilicate anions is constant in the region 1-1.5 CaO/SiO2 but decreases with increasing temperature of formation of C—S—H(Di, Poly).
