    Notes: Summary The effect of a selective irradiation of myelin by3H β-particles was studied by light and electron microscopic methods in guinea pig spinal cord. The animals were injected with [3H]leucine shortly after birth when the rate of myelin biosynthesis is high and sacrificed 130 days later. In spinal cord the radioactivity was mainly preserved in myelin because the half life of myelin proteins is much higher than that of most other CNS protein. As a consequence the irradiation dose in the white matter was much higher than in the gray matter. In myelin internally irradiated by3H β-particles within 130 days at a dose of 10 Gy no alterations could be detected either by morphological or by morphometric methods.

    Notes: A very-high-sensitivity magnetometer is described in detail. The sensitivity of the apparatus is typically of the order of 10−9 A cm2/(Hz)1/2, so that changes in magnetic moment of 10−10 A cm2 can be detected. The magnetic moment can be calculated by simulation of the measurement system. An example of a hysteresis loop is shown. The size of the sample is determined by electron microscopy. The physical limits of the measurement system are worked out and discussed.

    Notes: The distribution of the critical field of nontextured polycrystalline ferrite is determined. Barium ferrite samples are saturated in one direction and measured with a field H applied at an angle θ to the saturation field. The measured quantities are the remanent magnetization and the microwave hysteresis including minor loops. Especially the microwave absorption curves allow direct analysis of the critical field as a function of the orientation angle cursive-theta0 between H and the easy axis. Starting with these data a fit of the calculated to the measured remanence curves yield the distribution. The figure shows the critical field distribution of a ferrite sample with large coercivity. Additionally the calculated and measured resonance fields ares are given. All field strengths are normalized to the anisotropy field, which can also be determined from the microwave measurement.1

    Notes: The magnetic stiffness is measured by the torsion pendulum method as a function of the applied field. Measurements are performed on random assemblies of chemically coprecipitated barium ferrite powders. The magnetic stiffness for both minor and major loops of the hysteresis cycle is measured and compared with calculated curves based on the model of coherent rotation. The discrepancies between theory and experiment are partly due to the effect of magnetic interaction.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In randomisierter Folge wurden monofile Polyglyconate bzw. Polyesterfäden zur Hernienreparation nach Shouldice verwandt. Bei 416 Operationen an 376 Patienten war die postoperative Komplikationsrate in beiden Gruppen gleichmäßig niedrig. Führend waren Hämatome bzw. Serome mit 3,4%, mit Redondrainage 2,4%, ohne diese 4,7%. Bei einem mittleren postoperativen Intervall von 401 Tagen fand sich ein echtes und ein Pseudorezidiv (Schenkelhernie) — entsprechend einer Rezidivquote von 0.2 bzw. 0,5 %. Hodenatrophien fanden sich in insgesamt 1 %. Damit hat sich die Hernioplastik nach Shouldice als sicheres Routineverfahren erwiesen.
    Notes: Summary In random order, monofile polyglyconate, or polyester sutures were used in Shouldice hernioplasty. In 416 operations on 376 patients, postoperative complications occurred at a similar low frequency in both groups. The incidence of hematoma and seroma was 3.4%. With subcutaneus drainage it was 2.4% and without it 4.7%. During a mean follow-up period of 401 days, only one real and one pseudorecurrence (femoral hernia) were observed, implying a recurrence rate of 0.2%–0.5%. The incidence of testicular atrophy was 1 %. It is concluded that Shouldice repair is a safe method of routine surgery for groin hernias.
