Notes: Summary Ultrastructural studies on the skin of two patients affected by infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD) were performed to evaluate its diagnostic value and to discuss the etiology of INAD. While the majority of terminal axons around intradermal glands were dystophic consisting of tubulomembranous and tubulovesicular profiles sometimes accompanied by synaptic vesicles, there were only few dystophic axons inside intradermal nerve bundles. These observations suggest that the primary lesion of INAD is located in terminal and presynaptic axons. Therefore, terminal axons have to be investigated when a diagnostic skin biopsy is performed in INAD.

Notes: Two different types of T cell clones which recognize Mlsb haplotype gene products were established by using mice congenic at the Mls locus. The antigens defined by these T cells showed differences not only in strain distribution but also in the restriction element for antigen recognition by T cells (i.e. Kd or Dd). The antigens appear to be expressed on various types of lymphocytes.

Notes: The stimulated emission cross section is calculated on the basis of emission spectrum and spontaneous lifetime measurements. The maximum stimulated emission cross section is determined to be 0.69×10−20 cm2. A comparison is made between the calculated stimulated emission cross section and one which has been determined from laser oscillation experiments. Fair agreement between them is obtained within a 20% error at wavelengths from 770 to 810 nm.

Notes: Impulse responses of the piezoelectric photoacoustic (PA) signal have been measured by using the technique of cross correlation. Experimental impulse responses of aluminum model samples are in good agreement with theoretical prediction. It is shown that thermal diffusivities of opaque materials can be determined by measured zero-crossing times of PA impulse response. Cracks in aluminum samples are detected by measuring a one-dimensional image of the impulse response of the PA signal.

Notes: Garnet films of nominal composition (Y,Nd)3Ga5O12, were grown on (110) 1°-off Gd3Ga5O12 substrates for investigation of their growth-induced optical anisotropy. Optical birefringence and directions of the electric vectors of polarized rays passing through the films were measured under a polarizing microscope using a Brace–Köhler compensator. The growth-induced anisotropy of these films optically exhibited orthorhombic characteristics with the X, Y, and Z optic elasticity axes coinciding with the [001], [110], and [1¯10] directions, respectively. The crystallographic data obtained by means of single-crystal diffractometry suggested that the cubic crystal system of the garnet film was distorted, though very slightly, to an orthorhombic one with a,b, and c axes that coincided, respectively, with the [1¯10],[001], and [110] of the original cubic cell. In addition, by annealing at 1150 °C, this distortion disappeared and the crystal system reverted to cubic.

Notes: Abstract The preparation of no-carrier-added48V(IV) and48V(V) from a natural titanium target irradiated by a proton beam has been developed. The48V recovered from the target by solvent extraction was purified as48V(V) with a cation exchange column and then converted to48V(IV) by reduction with ethanol. One hour irradiations at 10 μA of 18 MeV protons gave approximately 2mCi (a radiochemical yield of 41%) of radiochemically pure and almost salt-free48V(IV) and48V(V) with high specific activities. They were shown to be suitable for biological tracer use.

Notes: Abstract A continuous flow electro-manipulator available both for mass production of fused and of transfected plant protoplasts was devised using a flow chamber with gold-coated glass panel electrodes. Up to 100 ml of protoplasts suspension were treated within 20 min at the rate of approximately 1×106 protoplasts / min. The yield of diheterokaryons between tobacco mesophyll and carrot root protoplasts reached approximately 10 % of total protoplasts by flow electro-fusion. More than 95 % of tobacco and cowpea mesophyll protoplasts became infected with tobacco mosaic virus RNA by flow electro-transfection.

Notes: Abstract The crystal structure and the unit-cell parameters of magnetite have been studied at room temperature up to a pressure of 4.5 GPa using a diamond anvil cell and a four-circle X-ray diffractometer. The isothermal bulk modulus (K T ) and its pressure derivative (K' T ) determined by fitting the pressure-volume data to the Murnaghan equation of state are 181(2) GPa and 5.5(15), respectively. The positional parameter u does not vary significantly over the pressure range of this study. The linear compressibilities of the interatomic distances and the bulk moduli of the polyhedra have been calculated from the pressure dependences of the unit-cell edge a and the u parameter. The Bloch equation has been modified to derive a relationship between the Néel temperature and the parameter u. The modified Bloch equation gives a closer agreement with the experimental results than the Weisz equation.

Notes: Abstract Hepatic abscess is rare in children. A patient with a post-traumatic hepatic abscess was successfully treated by ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage. Although he underwent a drainage operation for the perihepatic abscesses, high fever continued. It was then considered that the traumatic hematoma had been infected and had become an abscess. Sonographically-guided percutaneous aspiration is useful for the definite diagnosis of hepatic abscess. Subsequent percutaneous drainage under ultrasound imaging is a safe and useful therapeutic method even in a poor-risk patient.
