    Notes: We found that, when boron was introduced into GaAs:Si, the deep donors induced by pressure exceeding 20 kbar reported previously by M. Mizuta, M. Tachikawa, H. Kukimoto, and S. Minomura [J. Appl. Phys. 24, L143 (1985)] disappeared while new donor levels with reduced binding energies and capture barrier heights appeared. It is proposed that B atoms paired up with Si donor atoms and the resultant change in the short-range potential of the Si donor atoms depressed the capture barrier height of the pressure-induced deep donor.

    Notes: We have found a new electron trap state in Si-doped AlxGa1−xAs by deep level transient spectroscopy and constant temperature capacitance transient measurements under strong light illumination. This new trap is shallower than the DX center associated with Si impurity in that its emission and capture activation energies are equal to 0.20±0.05 and 0.17±0.05 eV, respectively. Its maximum concentration is comparable to the concentration of the DX center. Possible origins of this new trap and its relationship to the DX center are discussed.

    Notes: The Schottky barrier height at the Pt/GaAs interface has been measured as a function of pressure using a diamond anvil cell. The Schottky barrier height was found to shift to higher energy with a linear pressure coefficient of 11 meV/kbar, which is equal to the pressure coefficient of the fundamental gap of GaAs and with a nonlinear coefficient of −0.26 meV/kbar2. These results are discussed in terms of defect models which have been proposed to explain the Fermi level pinning in Schottky barriers.

    Notes: Deep centers induced by hydrostatic pressure in GaAs:Si have been studied by deep level transient spectroscopy and constant temperature capacitance transient techniques. The capture behavior of these centers has been studied in detail and found to be consistent with the multiphonon emission theory. The pressure coefficients of the ionization energy and the barrier height are consistent with the large lattice relaxation model proposed by D. V. Lang and R. A. Logan [Phys. Rev. Lett. 39, 635 (1977)].

    Notes: The pressure dependence of the DX center in Ga1−xAlxAs :Te has been studied in two samples with x=0.15 and 0.35, respectively. The pressure coefficients of the activation energies for both emission and capture were found to change sign when the band gap of GaAlAs changes from direct to indirect. These results, together with previous experiments, suggested that electrons can be emitted from and capture into the DX centers via both L and X valleys.

    Notes: Summary The inhibitory activity of urine on calcium oxalate crystallization was measured as an inhibitory index using a gel model modified from Schneider et al. [8]. Urine samples from 36 recurrent stone formers and 21 controls in 3 separate periods (morning, afternoon and evening) were tested. Mean inhibitory indices of 〉0 were observed among normal controls in the 3 sampled periods and among stone formers in the morning and afternoon samples. A significantly lower (negative) value was observed in the evening samples of stone formers, indicating a higher tendency towards crystallization than normal. The gel method may be applied to identify individuals at risk of stone formation if sufficient numbers of period-defined urine samples from the individual are tested for a statistically significant mean inhibitory index but whether this is practical in a clinical laboratory will need further evaluations.

    Notes: Abstract The criteria for hospital admission of children who have suffered a minor head injury are highly subjective. Often the presence of post-traumatic emesis becomes an influential factor, but the mechanisms that trigger emesis following minor head injuries are not known. From a prospective study of 96 consecutive children with their first mild head injury (GCS 13–15) and a retrospective study of 29 consecutive more seriously injured children (GCS 8–12), we conclude that post-traumatic emesis is more common: (1) following minor head injuries than following more severe head injuries (P〈0.05); (2) in children over 2 years old; (P〈0.001); (3) in children injured within an hour of a meal or snack (p〈0.001). The presence of a skull fracture or the site of the impact does not influence the incidence or duration of post-traumatic emesis. Retching and vomiting generally subside within 3 h in children injured within an hour of a meal or snack. When vomiting appears in children injured more than an hour after a meal or a snack, it may be quite protracted (mean=7.5 h). Children over 2 years of age with post-traumatic emesis who are neurologically stable following a mild head injury that occurred within an hour of a meal or snack can be expected to improve quickly. Their counterparts injured more than an hour after a meal or snack are likely to remain distressed much longer and are best admitted to hospital.

    Notes: Abstract Chemical analysis of the eggs spawned by fiveSinularia soft corals (Octocorallia, Alcyoniidae) collected in the central region of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, revealed the presence of the known cembranoid diterpenes epoxypukalide and/or pukalide in all cases. Examination of the colonies from which the eggs were released one month before spawning and also some time after spawning failed to detect either diterpene in the coral tissue. The three dimensional structures of pukalide and epoxypukalide, as determined by the single-crystal X-ray technique, are reported for the first time. The wide distribution of pukalide and epoxypukalide and of related compounds within the octocorallia is discussed.
