Notes: Abstract Thrombosis of the great vessels, and especially of the aorta, is rare in neonates. We report a case with thrombosis of the ascending aorta, aortic arch, brachiocephalic trunk and subclavian artery. Clinically, severe heart failure occurred on the 1st day of life and the diagnosis was confirmed by echocardiography and cardiac catheterization, including angiocardiography. Left ventricular function was found to be extremely depressed. An infusion with prostaglandin E1 was initiated in order to improve the systemic circulation by dilating the arterial duct. The infant died of neurological complications prior to surgery.

Notes: Summary In 21 patients with ischaemic strokes we have monitored plasma viscosity, total plasma concentration, numeric average molecular weight (Mn), and weight average molecular weight (Mw) of Dextran 40 (dextran) and hydroxyethylstarch 200/0.5 (HES) during 10 days of treatment (days 1–4, 2×500 ml; days 5–10, 1×500 ml). Plasma concentrations of dextran increased during the first 4 days (8.3 mg·ml−1 on the first day to 18.0 mg·ml−1 on the fifth day), reached an apparent steady state of 17.2 mg·ml−1 during the next 6 days, and declined subsequently with a half-time (t1/2) of 4.03 days. After ten days treatment Mn and Mw were shifted towards higher values. Plasma viscosity increased from 1.26 mPas to 1.69 mPas on Day 10 (p〈0.01) and was linearly correlated with the total plasma concentration of dextran (p〈0.001; r=0.88). Total plasma concentrations of HES averaged 11.7 mg·ml−1 on Day 1 and 12.4 mg·ml−1 on Day 5. The molecular weight distribution did not change during the infusions but decreased in comparison with the administered solution. Plasma viscosity fell from 1.40 mPas to 1.30 mPas at Day 10 (p〈0.05) and was not related to the concentration of HES. The haemodiluting effect, as indicated by a decrease of the haematocrit, was 22% and 16.8% for dextran and HES respectively. These data suggest several advantages of HES compared with dextran in haemodilution therapy of ischaemic stroke.

Notes: A procedure is described which determines the best rotations to superimpose M rigid n-point objects, such that the weighted sum of mutual squared deviations is minimized. Apart from providing an easy and rigorous way for the least-squares superposition of any number of similar structures, this procedure can also be used to obtain a set of mean atomic positions for a substructural fragment that is contained in different structures with slight deviations from its mean geometry or to symmetrize distorted structures.

Notes: Some aspects of the dynamics of thin-film synthesis of aluminum nitride and aluminum oxide produced by ion-assisted deposition have been deduced from in situ measurements by ellipsometry, photometry, and ion scattering spectroscopy. Measurements obtained during the etching of aluminum films by nitrogen and oxygen ion beams have established the thickness of the synthesized layer and the rate of compound formation. Some of these measurements have been compared with a theoretical model which predicts the time evolution of the synthesized surface layer as well as the steady-state layer thickness. The breakdown voltage and variation of capacitance with applied voltage of aluminum oxide films prepared by ion-assisted deposition are also presented. Furthermore, the optical properties of ion-assisted AlN and Al2O3 in the visible region are given.

Notes: Summary Fibrosis and neoplasia are evoked by asbestos fibres. Different experimental models have been used to elucidate the cellular mechanism of their pathogenesis but there is no report available dealing with the role of structural glycoproteins and collagens in the development of the fibrosis. The omentums of 20 female SPF-Sprague-Dawley rats were investigated 1, 2 and 6 months after intraperitoneal injection of 15 mg UICC reference samples of crocidolite, by light- and immunofluorescence microscopy. Using monospecific antibodies, laminin, collagens types I and III and fibronectin were localized. After 6 months typical asbestos bodies were detected. By indirect marking of the basal lamina with anti-laminin-antibodies the marked degree of vessel proliferation occurring during the development of granuloma became visible. The deposition of connective tissue which was already established after 4 weeks was mainly due to collagen type III. After 4 and 8 weeks an accumulation of fibronectin associated with larger asbestos fibres was observed. The results suggest that fibrogenesis is promoted by the opsonic activity of fibronectin for long asbestos fibres. The fibrosis may derive from activated resident fibroblasts.

Notes: Abstract Single breath nitrogen washout tests were analyzed in dogs (n=8) with healthy lungs and after development of emphysema. The animals were in the supine position and studied during anaesthesia and mechanical ventilation (FiO2=0.4, FiN2=0.6). During controlled expiration with constant flow (VE=0.15 1/s) onset of phase IV of the alveolar plateau was related to airway closure of dependent lung regions (closing volume CV). In the control state, CV accounted for 6.2±1.5% VC, and closing capacity (CC) was lower than functional residual capacity (FRC). Likewise, gas exchange was normal in all animals (PaO2=24.7±3.32 kPa, PaCO2=5.18±0.53 kPa, PA-aO2=2.6±0.3 kPa). Panlobular emphysema (PLE) was induced by inhalation of papain (100 mg/kg). After three weeks development of PLE was documented by messurements of lung volumes (functional residual capacity (FRC), expired vital capacity (EVC), total lung capacity (TLC), residual volume (RV)), pulmonary mechanics (dynamic and static compliance (Cdyn, Cstat), mean airway resistance (Raw)), gas exchange (PaO2, PaCO2, PA-aO2), and by radiomorphological analysis. In the PLE-group, FRC and RV (p≤0.05), and Cstat (p≤0.01) were significantly elevated. CV increased to 16.2±2.7% VC (p≤0.01) and CC exceeded FRC by 80 ml, indicating that tidal volume breathing took place within the range of closing volume. Oxygenation was significantly impaired (PaO2=18.6±3.72 kPa, PA-aO2-6.5±1.1 kPa, p≤0.05), but not CO2-elimination. Pathological analysis by radiomorphological means showed dissiminate parenchymal lesions compatible with emphysema of grade II severity located predominantly in subpleural areas. In dogs with papain-induced PLE, premature closure of dependent airways is enhanced, which is due to structural changes and a loss of elastic recoil in the lungs.

Notes: Abstract The absorption of selenomethionine Se 75-la-belled homocholic acid conjugated with taurine (75-SE-HCAT) was tested in 46 patients. Retention measurements using (1) an uncollimated gamma camera and (2) a measuring arrangement similar to a human-body counter were compared in order to obtain a quantitative assessment of the absorption capacity of the terminal ileum for bile acids. The retention curve obtained after the oral administration of the 75Se-labelled bile-acid analogue showed a monoexponential decline; in the case of unimpaired absorption, the half-life was greater than 2.5 days. When more than 30 cm of the ileum had been eliminated by inflammatory infection or resection, the measured half-life was below 0.5 days due to malabsorption. We also performed a quantitative determination of the hepatic secretion of 75-Se-HCAT into the gall bladder. If more than 80% of the activity administered is found in the gall bladder, disturbed absorption of bile acids in the terminal ileum can be excluded. Values smaller than 80%, however, do not provide proof of disturbed absorption.
