    Notizen: The development of a new integrated materials science facility (station 9.3) on the wiggler line of the Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source is outlined. The facility combines instrumentation for data acquisition using both spectroscopic (XANES and EXAFS) and diffraction techniques and is optimized towards industrial applications such as catalysis and electrochemistry using in situ techniques.

    Notizen: Two patients had generalised convulsions which occurred several hours afer anaesthesia supplemented with enpurane. One patient had to be treated for life threatening status epilepticus 7 hours after anaesthesia and the other had a myoclonic convulsion 17 hours after recovery from anaesthesia. Neither had any relevant pre-operative history of epilepsy or convulsions. Possible synergistic roles of the metabolite of atracurium. laudanosine, as well as of cephazolin and photic stimulation, are discussed.

    Notizen: Alpha cell tumours of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans are rare. The glucagonoma syndrome is caused by excess glucagon secretion from such a tumour. Physiologically, glucagon is important in the control of the homeostasis of glucose and certain amino acids. Pharmacologically, it has been used to treat heart failure. Problems with both glucose homeostasis and myocardial function could, therefore, theoretically be anticipated following resection of a glucagonoma. This paper describes the peri-operative management of such a case, where, despite measured changes in glucagon, no problems of this nature were encountered.

    Notizen: Summary Frozen samples from 92 malignant astrocytomas were stained with a panel of monoclonal antibodies directed against macrophages and lymphocytes. A follow-up to death was available on 68 cases which form the basis of this study. Large numbers of macrophages were found in all cases; T lymphocytes, mostly of the CD8 phenotype were also seen in moderate numbers in 70% of cases. CD4-positive cells were present in small numbers in 32% and B cells were seen in only 8% of cases. Analysis of the survival showed no demonstrable correlation between the numbers of macrophages or CD4 lymphocytes and survival. The survival curves for parencymal CD8 infiltration diverged after 9 months suggesting increased survival for those patients without such an infiltration but the difference failed to reach statistical significance (P=0.37). No correlation between lymphocytic cuffing and survival was seen after studying all paraffinembedded material. We conclude that there is no significant statistical correlation between survival and the various types of mononuclear cell infiltrating malignant astrocytomas.

    Notizen: Summary Psoriatic arthritis is thought to be associated with periarticular osteoporosis while rheumatoid arthritis may be associated with generalised as well as periarticular bone loss. To assess the extent of total and peripheral bone loss in these two diseases, total body calcium was measured by in vivo neutron activation analysis and peripheral bone mass was assessed by metacarpal indices in age-matched patients with psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs alone. In comparison with age and sex-matched normal controls, total and peripheral bone mass was normal in psoriatic arthritis. There were significant reductions in total (6.2% in men; 7.9% in women) and peripheral (10.9% in men; 12.8% in women) bone mass in patients with rheumatoid arthritis compared with controls. Peripheral bone mass was significantly correlated with the degree of radiographic damage in male and female patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The mean annual loss of total body calcium was insignificant in psoriatic arthritis (0.6% in men; 1.9% in women) but markedly greater in rheumatoid arthritis (4.4% in men; 2.7% in women). The data suggested that total and peripheral bone loss is greater in rheumatoid arthritis than psoriatic arthritis. Substantial reductions in peripheral bone mass in patients with rheumatoid arthritis not receiving corticosteroids may account in part for the small reductions in total bone mass.

    Notizen: Abstract We have developed a “crossover” formalism that reconciles the singular asymptotic critical behavior of the thermodynamic properties of fluids with the classical behavior of these properties well away from the critical point. The proposed formalism is based on theoretical predictions for the crossover behavior suggested by the renormalization-group theory of critical phenomena. We demonstrate the formalism for a fluid whose classical behavior away from the critical point is represented by the equation of state of van der Waals.
