Notes: Summary A possible new role for the flavonoid (−)-epicatechin (II) is described. It has no growth effects on its own, but when it is added to lettuce and rice seeds together with the known seedling growth inhibitor nagilactone E (I), the growth inhibitor activity ofI can cease and growth stimulation can be observed.

Notes: Summary In male mice of strains C3H and C57BL/6 an experimental immune-mediated diabetes can be induced by multiple low doses of streptozotocin. The delay and partial suppression of hyperglycaemia after anti-I-A monoclonal antibody administration was dose dependent. Even saturation levels of anti-I-A did not cause complete protection from diabetes development. Administration of anti-I-E monoclonal antibody also significantly delayed the onset of hyperglycaemia. Surprisingly, the combined treatment with anti-I-A and anti-I-E did not result in better protection from diabetes. Thus, there is an I-A and I-E independent component of the disease. Furthermore, there is no restriction to either I-A or I-E. Anti-I-A was only effective when given at the beginning of the experiment, which implies that I-A molecules have a primary function during the induction of diabetes. The contribution of I-J to the disease process is different. Administration of a polyspecific alloantiserum to I-J almost completely prevented hyperglycaemia. Injections of monospecific antibodies to I-J determinants enhanced hyperglycaemia, especially when given after the induction of diabetes. This indicates that I-J is involved in initial as well as in later stages of the disease process.

Notes: Summary Changes in vestibulospinal evoked potentials (VsEP) and motor evoked potentials (MEP) were examined in 10 cats before and after two different weight-dropping spinal cord injuries. In six animals somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were also monitored. The recordings were done from epidural spinal cord electrodes. Before and after severe and light weight-dropping spinal cord injuries all 3 modalities were recorded at the same time intervals till the end of 4th hour postinjury. According to a scoring system, evoked potential changes below and above the level of injury were monitored, and compared with each other. This study showed that the different motor stimulation methods use different descending spinal tracts, and both can be ueful as a monitoring tool. Both descending tracts carrying VsEP and MEP had similarly remarkable changes after severe spinal cord injury. These consisted of major deformation, development of an evoked injury potential and complete potential loss. During the 4 hour monitoring period, no case showed EP recovery in the severe injury group. Light spinal cord injury caused somewhat more deterioration in MEPs than VsEP. The higher numbers of severe potential alterations in the lightly injured animals suggest that MEP is a more sensitive method for spinal cord monitoring compared to VsEP and also to SEP. On the other hand, this sensitivity might be a disadvantage during intraoperative monitoring, if MEP alone were used.

Notes: We have designed a 1.5-GeV storage-ring system for a new synchrotron-radiation project at Hiroshima. The storage ring has an achromatic structure with six dispersion-free straight sections for insertion devices. Superconducting horizontal wigglers are used to generate hard x ray. The multipole field of the wiggler causes no problem on beam dynamics. In spite of its small size, 100 m in circumference, the ring can generate excellent synchrotron radiation in a wide wavelength region from VUV up to hard x rays.

Notes: Angular distributions of radiation from a three-pole superconducting horizontal wiggler operated on a 1.5-GeV storage ring have been calculated in detail. The horizontal distribution of vertically integrated power exhibits a remarkable asymmetry when the radiation is observed at distances close to the center of the wiggler. The distribution exhibits a prominent dip in the forward direction, at a position where the radiation stems primarily from the main magnet, which is set at a maximum field of 4.40 T. The spectral flux at around 1–2 A(ring) exhibits an effective angular spread of ±37 mrad. The central brilliance at 1 A(ring) is 7×1012 photons/s mrad2 mm2 0.1% bandwidth for a current of 300 mA.

Notes: A new VUV beamline at the Photon Factory ring that is designed to accept radiation emitted from an undulator is described. The characteristics of the undulator and all parts of the beamline; a front end, a mirror system, and two monochromators, are described in detail. The characteristics of optical elements in the beamline are also shown.

Notes: Summary A simple and sensitive human proinsulin radioimmunoassay system was developed using guinea pig antiproinsulin serum, which cross-reacted neither with human insulin nor C-peptide. The recognition site of the antiserum seems to be located near the junction between the B chain and C-peptide. With this assay system, we studied the serum proinsulin concentration at fasting and after an oral 100 g glucose load in 25 healthy subjects, 21 subjects with impaired glucose tolerance and 40 patients with Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. At fasting, serum proinsulin was 5.8±3.3 pmol/l in normal subjects as compared to 9.5±6.9 pmol/l (p〈0.05) in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance and 12.6±7.5 pmol/l (p〈0.001) in diabetic patients. The molar ratio of proinsulin to insulin was also increased in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes compared to control subjects. After a 100 g oral glucose load, serum proinsulin increased more slowly than insulin. The proinsulin response after an oral glucose load was augmented in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes, while the insulin response decreased with the elevation of fasting plasma glucose. Diabetic patients with high fasting plasma glucose had a very poor insulin response, but the proinsulin response was similar to control subjects. There was a linear correlation between summed proinsulin values and summed insulin values, but the slope of the regression line was steeper in diabetic patients than in control subjects. There was a relative increase in serum proinsulin both in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance and diabetic patients. We suggest that B cells may release ‘immature’ granules richer in proinsulin content as well as mature granules in the over-stimulated state.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of oxidation of “V5S8” and V3S4 to V2O3 were studied by using both isothermal and nonisothermal thermogravimetry in the oxygen partial pressure range from 1.0×10−1 to 1.0×10−3 atm. The kinetic equation describing the oxidation process was found to bekt=1-(1−α)1/1.5 and was valid for the fraction of sample reactedα=0 to 80–95%. The activation energy was found to be from 45.9 to 27.8 kJ/mol−1 for “V5S8”, and from 46.8 to 29.0 kj/mol−1 for V3S4 over the temperature range 375 to 500°. The relationship between rate constantk andPO2 was also determined.
