Notes: Summary The band saw blade vibration under non-moving and moving conditions has been experimentally studied for band saw blades unfitted with saw tension and back crown, fitted only with saw tension, and only with back crown. The lateral natural frequency of a band saw blade was found to decrease by fitting saw tension in a saw blade, but there was little or no effect for blades having only back crown. The torsional natural frequency of a band saw blade increased by fitting saw tension in a saw blade, but again there was little or no effect of fitting back crown in a blade. The lateral natural frequency decreased by tilting the upper wheel for the band saw blades investigated. On the contrary, when the upper wheel was tilted the torsional natural frequency increased for an untensioned blade with no back crown, and blades fitted only with back crown, however, there was little or no effect for a band saw blade fitted only with tension. The lateral and torsional natural frequencies significantly affected the over all self-excited displacement vibration of band saw blades. However, the displacement vibration due to the frequency of the number of wheel rotation affected significantly the over all self-excited displacement vibration of a band saw blade fitted with excessive back crown.

Notes: Abstract We proposed a numerical index for evaluating human heat tolerance which is practically useful. The adaptive changes in heat tolerance of unacclimatized subjects during short-term heat acclimatization could be evaluated by this index. The present investigation was performed to examine whether or not our index can reflect effects on heat tolerance of a long-term acclimatization as seen in subtropical natives. Nineteen young male residents born and raised in Okinawa (subtropical zone), 18 male residents born in the Japan Main Islands (temperate zone) but moved to Okinawa and 25 male students in Kyoto (temperate zone) were chosen to be subjects. Their age were from 19 to 29 years. Sweating reaction was examined for 60 min in summer, by immersing legs in stirring water of 42°C by using a mobile climatic chamber of 30°C with 70 RH. Local sweat samples from the chest and back were collected at 15 min interval by the filter paper method. Sweating reaction of the residents born and raised in Okinawa was characterized by smaller volume of sweating and lower salt concentration in sweat, while the rise in rectal temperature and increase in heart rate differ less between the three groups. It is concluded that residents born and raised in Okinawa showed higher heat tolerance than the other two groups when assessed by our factorial index method.

Notes: [Auszug] Silver eels were collected in the Hiranuma and Mabuchi Rivers in Aomori prefecture (Japan) in September 1975. Females and males were matured with repeated injections of chum salmon pituitary homogenate and Synahorin (Teikoku Zoki), respectively5,6. Eggs were stripped from the females, placed into ...

Notes: Summary The 3-dimensional architecture of the junctional region between Purkinje fibers and ordinary myocardial cells has been closely studied by combined scanning electron microscopy and chemical digestion in the goat heart. It was revealed that the Purkinje fibers forming the terminal arborization of the atrioventricular bundle are followed by transitional cells which are in contact with ordinary myocardial cells.

Notes: Summary Nineteen cases of malignant meningiomas-seven haemangiopericytic, two papillary and ten of the anaplastic type-were examined clinicopathologically. These were ten male and nine female patients and eleven of these received reoperation for recurrence. Tumours of the hemangiopericytic type had similar angiographic and macrooscopic features and malignant characteristics were found microscopically in some tumours. There were intratumoral cysts in both cases of the papillary type and these tumours had a high cellularity, an increased number of mitosis, haemorrhage and partially haemangiopericytic patterns. Six cases of the anaplastic type had changed from a benign type at recurrence and those tumours had variable features radiographically and macroscopically. Lack of typical arrangement, a large number of mitoses, increased cellularity, focal necrosis, brain infiltration, pleomorphism and anaplasia were found histologically. Four cases of the anaplastic type were diagnosed at the first operation and these tumours had apparently similar angiographic and macroscopic features, but with variable organoid structures and malignant forms, microscopically. Electron microscopic features are also described. In malignant meningiomas, the recurrence rate was high even in cases of total removal. The outcome for these patients was good in the papillary type, relatively good in the haemangiopericytic type and poor in the anaplastic type. From these results therapeutic indications are also suggested.

Notes: Summary Intracellular records were obtained from neurons in the region of the red nucleus (RN) of cat brain slices. Both EPSPs and IPSPs were recorded in response to local electrical stimulation and these resembled similar electrophysiological responses observed in experiments conducted in vivo. Monosynaptic and polysynaptic IPSPs were observed, suggesting the existence of inhibitory interneurons near or within the RN region. When added to the bathing solution, L-glutamate and L-aspartate depolarized RN neurons with a decrease in input resistance. γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glycine hyperpolarized the cells with a decrease in input resistance. GABA also elicited a depolarizing response. These amino acid actions had direct postsynaptic effects, since the experiments were conducted in a low Ca2+/high Mg2+ medium which blocked synaptic transmission.

Notes: Summary The depressor effects of natural and synthetic ACTH peptides were demonstrated in the rat. This is an extra-adrenal action of ACTH and is not related to the adrenal-stimulating or melanocyte-stimulating activity of the peptide.
