Notes: Abstract:  NC/Nga mice have pathological and behavioral features similar to those seen in human atopic dermatitis. There are two known dermatitis models in NC/Nga mice, one being spontaneous-induced dermatitis under conventional conditions and the other 2,4,6-trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB)-induced allergic contact dermatitis. However, there are significant differences in time course on development of dermatitis. We studied the role of scratching behavior (sign of itch) on the development of dermatitis on spontaneous- and TNCB-induced dermatitis. We measured scratching counts, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and skin inflammation score, under conventional conditions or by applying 5% TNCB once a week for 6 weeks in NC/Nga mice. In spontaneous-induced dermatitis, scratching counts increased with the passage of time. The scratching counts were significantly increased only 1 week after housing the mice under conventional conditions, but no changes were observed in cases of TNCB-induced dermatitis. In spontaneous-induced dermatitis, TEWL and skin-inflammation score were gradually increased, time-dependently. On the other hand, in TNCB-induced dermatitis, these dependent values rapidly increased and reached a maximum only after 24 h TNCB application. These data suggest that pathogenesis of spontaneous- and allergic contact-induced dermatitis was clearly different. It will be of major interest to identify the pruritic mediators causing profound scratching behavior and scratching-induced aggravation of inflammation in the spontaneous-induced dermatitis, as opposed to the inflammatory mediators that cause contact allergic dermatitis without major scratching.

Notes: Purpose - In this paper, a new method for estimating iron loss under a distorted elliptical rotating flux is proposed. Design/methodology/approach - In order to precisely analyze the iron loss of rotating machines, the iron loss under distorted rotating flux should be taken into account. However, reports of precise analysis considering measured iron loss data under rotating flux are few. Findings - The iron loss of surface permanent magnet (SPM) motor model proposed by the investigation committee of IEE of Japan is estimated using the proposed method. The experimental examination is carried out by measuring the iron loss of the motor using a torque meter. Originality/value - Examines an estimation method of iron loss of motors.

Notes: Summary To determine the histochemical localization of asparagine-linked oligosaccharides of glycoproteins in a series of different mammalian and avian tissues, the effects of digestion with N-oligosaccharide glycopeptidase upon certain lectin-peroxidase-diaminobenzidine reactions of the histological structures involved have been studied by light microscopy. Throughout the tissues examined, asparaginelinked oligosaccharides of glycoproteins were localized mainly in histological structures of connective and muscular tissues, but were hardly or not visualized in those of epithelial tissues. these results appear to lead to the concept that connective and muscular tissues represent the main sites where plasma types of glycoproteins are involved in mammalian and avian species.

Notes: Summary Almond glycopeptidase is an enzyme which cleaves specifically β-aspartylglucosylamine linkages in glycoproteins with asialo-carbohydrate moieties. With this enzyme, it was possible to demonstrate the localization of asparagine-linked oligosaccharides in glycoproteins of human placenta and umbilical cord tissues. In these tissues, the oligosaccharides were shown to react positively for a series of histochemical procedures for neutral complex carbohydrates such as periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), peroxidase-labelledRicinus communis agglutinin-I-diaminobenzidine (PO-RCA-DAB) and concanavalin A-peroxidase-diaminobenzidine (Con A-PO-DAB). The asparagine-linked carbohydrates were localized in the placental villi, blood vessels and perivascular tissues and the umbilical cord blood vessels and matrix. The results of previous biochemical analyses performed upon the same tissues (Takahashiet al., 1981) have corroborated the results of the histochemical studies. The present results appear to substantiate the usefulness of almond glycopeptidase for the histochemical demonstration of the particular oligosaccharides of glycoproteins in tissues in general.

Notes: Summary To define the mechanism of hypopotassemia-induced U wave change, we performed open-chest experiments in 20 dogs and obtained following results: (1) During hemodialysis U wave amplitude of epicardial electrogram increased significantly (p〈0.05) from 0.4±0.3 (mean ± SD) to 1.2±0.5 mV with lowering serum potassium (K) concentrations from 3.4±0.4 to 2.2±0.2 mEq/l (p〈0.001) in 6 dogs. (2) These hypopotassemia-induced U waves disappeared after instillation of high K+ solution into the regional coronary artery, without detectable increase in systemic plasma K+ concentration. (3) In 10 dogs, huge (0.5–1.0 mV), delayed (corrected Q-U apex=0.66±0.16) positive U waves were induced at the epicardial surface by infusion of K+-free, Ca++-rich Tyrode solution into the regional coronary artery, whereas no appearance of negative U waves was shown at the endocardial surface. (4) In all of 6 dogs with infusion of K+-free, Ca++-rich solution, monophasic action potential registered with suction electrode showed early afterhyperpolarization, which corresponded to appearance of huge positive U waves. These data indicate that hypopotassemia-induced U wave may reflect early afterhyperpolarization developed in the ventricular muscle.

Notes: Abstract Systematic study of polarization of projectile like fragment12B in14N induced reactions on light mass-number targets has been continued. A large positive polarization at small energy loss region was observed for an27Al target at various reaction angles. Polarization is studied as a function of kinetic energy and reaction angle of12B in terms of a classical frictional force.
