Notes: Summary Report of a 33-year-old man with a yearlong historory of low-back pain radiating into the left leg. Neurologic examination upon admission tto the hospital revealed a spinal compression syndrome at the lovel L5. Laminectomy at L4/5 revealed an encapsulated intradural tumor measuring 4×2.5×2.5 cm. The tumor was attached to the dorsal root L4 and extended downward to the conus region. Light and electron microscopy revealed features mostly consistent with a mixed chemodectoma and ganglioneuroma.

Notes: Axon degeneration after disruption of fibre tracts in the mammalian nervous system is accompanied by myelin breakdown which leads to changes in its magnetic resonance properties. In two patients with pure motor strokes due to small ischaemic lesions restricted to the internal capsule, magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a narrow band of pathological signal increase descending band-like into the brain stem and ascending to the precentral gyrus, which corresponded to the well-known path of the pyramidal tract. The findings suggest that in man anterograde and possibly retrograde fibre degeneration can be traced in vivo by conventional magnetic resonance imaging techniques. Critical conditions are the presence of small, strategically located lesions, appropriate choice of imaging plane, and the interval between time of lesion and of imaging. This demonstration may open a new era for functional neuroanatomy of man.

Notes: The iron status of 54 male and 30 female elite skiers (biathlon, alpine and cross-country skiers) was studied during snow training and compared with that of relevant control groups. There was no significant difference between skiers and controls in mean Hb, serum ferritin, total iron-binding capacity, frequency of iron deficiency or anemia. Iron deficiency was found in 4 women (1 of whom was anemic) and 1 man, all in the cross-country group. The urinary iron concentration, investigated 1 day after hard cross-country training in 29 skiers, did not differ from that of a control group. In a separate study, 13 cross-country skiers were followed with repeated tests during a whole year. No change was seen in their iron status. Our results show that the iron status of both endurance and alpine skiers is comparable to that of a normal population and that there is no need for routine iron supplementation.

Notes: Summary 1. There is a high incidence of latent vasospastic changes in the hands of patients with DC regardless of the state of the disease. 2. The high incidence of vasospasm and ulnar nerve lesions in DC suggest, that in some ways these are related to the pathogenesis. 3. Comparing patients with a normal finger plethysmogram with those with a vasospastic vessel-reaction, there is no correlation concerning the ulnar nerve lesions in DC. Therefore we assume that these are independent constitutional factors. — 4. The disturbance in blood flow in the hand in DC is usually asymptomatic and is probably a different phenomenon from that seen in Raynaud's Syndrome.

Notes: Summary Quantitative data on protein catabolism employing urea production rate (PU) and the Bistrian index (BI) have been obtained in 8 patients with deep dermal burn injuries involving up to 80% of body surface. The advantages of these tests are demonstrated in the individual patient. Mean values of the PU and BI are especially high during the second and third week after injury and decrease to nearly normal values in the fourth week. Additional rises of PU and BI are sometimes caused by operative stress. Peak values were found in cases with high voltage injuries. A special nutritional regimen is presented to keep catabolism low. PU and BI are simple tests to monitor protein loss and can easily be carried out in any hospital.

Notes: Summary The effects of coagulation therapy using a 10% silver nitrate solution is studied on 13 children with scalds averaging 40% of the body surface. The main advantages are immediate pain relief, open wound treatment and stability of the circulatory system. The stable general condition of the patients is illustrated by the fluid balance, by the normal levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit, total protein, and sodium. The potential disadvantages are the risk of infection underneath the crust and the occasional delay in introducing surgical treatment as a result of incorrect initial clinical assessment of the depth of the burn.

Notes: Summary Iodine resorption and excretion, glomerular filtration and blood gas ratings in three patients with extensive burns during Betaisodona (Betadine) treatment were examined. The serum-iodine level increased up to 7 mg% as did the urine iodine content. The creatinine in the urine increased up to 100% but serum levels remained normal as did the pH and blood-gas analyses. No signs of iodine-intoxication or acidosis were found. Careful observation of the iodine-glomerular filtration pH and blood gas parameters is recommended, especially in children when Betaisodona is used in dermal burns.

Notes: Summary A method of evaluation of possible functional disturbances due to pectus excavatum is presented. With spirometric investigations and the bycicle exercise test in supine and upright position it is possible to distinguish between functional impairment caused by the deformity and a poor physical condition, which allows to select cases for osteoplasty or for augmentation. In a series of 17 cases the indication was psychosocial in 16 patients and only in 1 case was it functional. For masking the funnel deformity in situ polymerized Silastic RTV 382 is used which allows implantation by a short transverse incision over the xyphoid and gives satisfying results without undue complications.

Notes: Summary The plasma levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline were determined by a radioenzymatic method in 6 severely burned patients during the course of treatment and during the surgical procedures. The mean level of noradrenaline of all patients was 0.83±0.48 ng/ml during the first week of treatment, 0.62±0.40 ng/ml during the 2nd week and 0.61±0.42 ng/ml during the 3rd week. The corresponding levels of adrenaline were 0.23±0.20 ng/ml, 0.13±0.08 and 0.08±0.04 ng/ml, respectively. — These levels of catecholamines were lower than those reported in literature. However the surgical treatment provoked a considerable increase of especially noradrenaline intra-as well as postoperatively. This increase was most pronounced during the first operation performed within the 3rd and 13th day after the thermal injury and was independent of the anaesthetic agent used. — The data indicate that adequate infusion, intensive care, warm environment (30–32 °C) and early surgical treatment are important factors in the treatment of burn patients. Additionally warm environment during operation and short operation time are considered to be beneficial.
