Notes: Summary We used a cloned human cDNA probe homologous to the placenta chorionic gonadotropin β subunit (CGB) and to the pituitary luteinizing hormone β subunit (LHB) and Southern blotting techniques to analyse DNA from a series of rodent x human somatic cell hybrids for the presence of specific gonadotropin β subunit related sequences. Our results provide evidence for the assignment and linkage of the eight genes (or pseudogenes) coding for the β subunit of these glycoprotein hormones to chromosome 19. Moreover, we observed a strict concordance between the permissivity of mouse x man hybrid cells to enteroviruses (which is linked to the presence of specific cell receptors encoded by human chromosome 19) and the presence of CGB and LHB related sequences, thus confirming the localization of the structural genes for the β subunits on chromosome 19.

Notes: Abstract Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the effects of M-One™ (Bacillus thuringiensis var.san diego) on larval instars ofColeomegilla maculata lengi Timberlake. Coccinellid larval development (from egg hatch to adult), completed on pollen treated with suspensions of M-One™ at 20 ml/litre (5.6×108 CPBIU/litre) and 200 ml/litre, took respectively 29.3 and 38.5 days compared with 21.9 days for the control (water). M-One™ did not cause larval mortality.C. maculata third instars did not show any preference between eggs ofLeptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) treated with water or with M-One™ at 20 ml/litre. However, at 200 ml M-One™/litre, the number of eggs attacked was 34.7% lower than the eggs treated with water only, 48 h after the beginning of the test. These results indicate that the use of M-One™, at the manufacturer's recommended field rate of 20 ml/litre, does not cause a major threat to larvalC. maculata populations.

Notes: Abstract Biochemical profiles on API Rapid CH* strips and protein profiles on polyacrylamide gels in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate were used to distinguish two strains of the entomopathogenic fungusBeauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin, ARSEF 2991 and ATCC 44860. Next, the toxicity of these two strains was determined at concentrations of 102, 104, 106 and 108 blastospores/ml on larvae of the Colorado potato beetleLeptinotarsa decemlineata Say (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and of its predator, the spotted ladybird beetle,Coleomegilla maculata lengi Timberlake (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Both strains were highly toxic toL. decemlineata larvae. However, the two strains exhibited different levels of toxicity forC. maculata larvae: ARSEF 2991 was toxic, whereas ATCC 44860 caused little coccinellid larval mortality.

Notes: Summary Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity is demonstrated in two mutant strains ofD. melanogaster lacking active aldehyde oxidase (ALDOX). The levels of ALDH activity are compared with those found for the wild strain ofD. melanogaster and its sibling speciesD. simulans. These data provide a rational explanation for the capacity of ALDOX-null flies to detoxify acetaldehyde and use it for energy production.

Notes: Abstract With a view to calculating the incompressibility $$\ddot \sigma $$ of the nuclear surface, we develop a constrained Hartree-Fock treatment of semi-infinite nuclear matter. Our approach leads first to a proof of the “ $$\dot \sigma = 0$$ ” theorem of Myers and Swiatecki, and then to a corroboration of a simple expression for $$\ddot \sigma $$ , previously obtained in an intuitive way by Stocker. This expression is used to calculate $$\ddot \sigma $$ for theS3, SkM and Gogny forces. The results are significantly different from those of a scaled HF calculation, but in very good agreement with the values of $$\ddot \sigma $$ that are implied by RPA calculations of the breathing mode in various finite nuclei.

Notes: Summary The influence of exercise-training on dietary-induced thermogenesis (DIT) was investigated in humans. The resting metabolic rate was identical in trained and non-trained subjects, but the response to a meal containing 1,636 kcal (6.9 MJ) was markedly lower in trained subjects. Mean dorsal skin temperature, as measured by thermography, was not influenced by training. A significant correlation was observed between postprandial RQ and DIT, which indicates that the reduced energy expenditure noted in trained subjects is related to a greater lipid oxidation. This sparing effect of exercise-training on energy utilization in the form of carbohydrate, is interpreted as adaptive in the sense that energy is preserved for the purpose of producing work.

Notes: Summary In order to study the distribution of neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity in the human hypothalamus, an immunocytochemical localization of this peptide was performed. Using antibodies developed against synthetic porcine neuropeptide Y (NPY), we have been able to localize immunoreactivity in neuronal cell bodies located exclusively in the infundibular nucleus. Immunostained fibers were found in several regions in the hypothalamus with a high concentration in the periventricular areas. Fibers were also found in the neurovascular zone of the median eminence, the pituitary stalk and the posterior pituitary. These results suggest that immunoreactive material related to porcine NPY is present in the human hypothalamus, with a distribution similar to that observed in the rat.
