Notes: Summary A case of juvenile-onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in a 30-year-old male patient is reported. He was admitted to the hospital because of severe diabetic neuropathy, predominantly in the lower extremities. Signs of autonomic neuropathy were not evident but the patient had severe orthostatic hypotension. Circulating catecholamine concentrations were normal; however, the blood pressure response to infused norepinephrine was reduced ten-fold compared to a group of normals. An improvement of the blood pressure response to sympathomimetic drugs was accomplished during the simultaneous administration of propranolol, a β-receptor blocking agent. The present data suggest a possible defect of the adrenergic receptor system in response to sympathomimetic drugs while the release of catecholamines and the function of the parasympathetic nervous system appears to be intact. Treatment with β-blocking agents such as propranolol as an adjunct to sympathomimetics seems to be a promising approach which might deserve further consideration in similar cases.

Notes: Abstract Neutron rich205Hg (T 1/2=5.2 min) was produced and on-line mass separated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The polarization achieved by optical pumping via the atomic line (6s 21 S 0↔6s6p 3 P 1,λ=2 537Å) was monitored by theβ decay asymmetry. Hyperfine structure and isotopic shift of the205Hg absorption line was determined by Zeeman scanning. In addition a magnetic resonance was performed on the polarized205Hg nuclei in the atomic ground state. The results are: $$I(^{205} Hg) = \tfrac{1}{2}$$ (confirmed);μ I (205Hg)=0.5915 (1)μ N (uncorrected for diamagnetism); isotopic shiftδv204/205=v(205Hg)-v(204Hg)=−1.8 (1) GHz.μ I and IS are discussed briefly in the frame of current literature.

Notes: Abstract An optical pumping apparatus has been attached to the reconstructed ISOLDE on-line mass separator at CERN in order to obtain nuclear data of isotopes far fromβ stability. As first results the spins of76Rb (T 1/2=36.8 s) and119Cs (T 1/2=37.7 s) have been determined byβ radiation detected optical pumping (β-RADOP) to beI=1 andI=9/2 respectively.

Notes: Abstract Reaction products corresponding to the transfer of one and several protons have been measured over a large angular range for incident energies of 380 MeV and 400 MeV in reactions of86Kr with88Sr,90Zr and92Mo. For transitions with smallQ-values (total kinetic energy loss TKEL≦10 MeV) the transfer probabilities are deduced. The magnitudes and slopes of these probabilities as function of the distance of closest approach between two nuclei are discussed. The results for single proton transfer are well described by tunneling, whereas the transfer of two and more nucleons into low lying states of the final nuclei seems to be influenced by intermediate transfer steps with larger TKEL. The data give the possibility to discuss the relation between deep-inelastic and quasi-elastic processes. The deep-inelastic data are analyzed successfully by including deformations, charge transfer and statistical fluctuations into the frictional model of Gross and Kalinowski.

Notes: Abstract Theγ-decay of 5 excited states along the yrast line has been observed in215Ac by inbeamγ-spectroscopy. Lifetimes andg-factors of 3 isomeric levels have been measured. The data show that pairing dominates the structure ofN=126 isotones.

Notes: Abstract 199mHg was produced and mass separated at the ISOLDE facility (CERN). Nuclear orientation achieved by optical pumping via the resonance line 6s 2 1 S 0→6s6p 3 P 1,λ=2537Å was monitored by means of the anisotropy of theγ-radiation emitted in the cascade199mHg(I=13/2+) $${}^{199m}Hg(I = 13/2^ + )\xrightarrow[{M4}]{}{}^{199*}Hg(I = 5/2^ - )\xrightarrow[{E2}]{}{}^{199}Hg(I = 1/2^ - ).$$ 199*Hg(I=5/2−)199Hg(I=1/2−). Maximum anisotropies of 35% (2,8%) were found in the M4 (E2) transition. A Zeeman scanning of the3 P 1 state yielded the positions ofF=13/2 and theF=15/2 hfs components relative to the reference isotope204Hg at 15.13 (15) GHz and −2.86 (15) GHz respectively. Isotopic shift and the quadrupole interaction constant were deduced from these values using the knownA factor.δv 199m/2O4=v 2O4−v 199m=12.20 (16) GHzB=−0.86 (25) GHz. From theB factor the spectroscopic quadrupolment was calculated asQ s =1.54 (44) barn.

Notes: Abstract The isotope shift between197Au (stable) and195Au (T 1/2=183 d) was determined by resonance fluorescence and polarization spectroscopy in the 6s2 S 1/2 -6p 2 P 1/2, λ =267.6nm line. The result is δν195, 197=-2.9(2) GHz corresponding to a change of the mean-square charge radius by δ〈r 2〉195, 197=0.063(9) fm2. The sample was confined to a resonance cell heated to temperatures of up to 1500°C.

Notes: Abstract The extension of the Nuclear Radiation Detected Optical Pumping method to mass-separated samples of isotopes far off stability is presented for a series of light Hg isotopes produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The isotope under investigation is transferred by an automatic transfer system into the optical pumping apparatus. Zeeman scanning of an isotopically pure Hg spectral lamp is used to reach energetic coincidence with the hyperfine structure components of the 6s 2 1 S 06s6p 3P1,λ=2,537 Å resonance line of the investigated isotope and the Hg lamp. The orientation built up by optical pumping is monitored via the asymmetry or anisotropy of the nuclear radiation. Nuclear spins, magnetic moments, electric quadrupole moments and the isotope shifts are obtained for181Hg-191Hg using theβ asymmetry as detector. The extension of the method using theγ anisotropy is discussed and test measurements on193Hg are presented. This paper describes the experimental procedure, results, and discussion are given in a following publication.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure splitting and the isotope shift in the (6 s2 1S0 - 6s 6p3P1,λ=2,537 Å) line of very neutron deficient Hg isotopes were determined by the β radiation detected optical pumping method (β-RADOP). In addition, nuclear magnetic resonance was observed in the atomic ground state. The results are Mean-square nuclear charge radii are calculated. Interpreting the sudden change of nuclear radius between187Hg and185Hg δ〈r2〉187,185=0.42(5)fm2 as oblate-prolate shape transition, one obtains δ〈β2〉 =0.054(5).

Notes: Abstract Average lifetimes of unresolved transitions deexciting very high spin states populated in28Si(136, 129Xe,xn)164− x, 157−xEr reactions have been determined by a Doppler shift attenuation method. We find that the yrast bump region between 1.0 and 1.6 MeV contains a majority of strongly collectiveE2 transitions with very short lifetimes (a few tens of fsec) in the well deformed nuclei around159Er and, with less certainty, almost comparably short lifetimes in the more spherical nuclei around152Er. In the high energy region of 2.0–3.2 MeV we observe transitions which depopulate longer lived states in the nuclei nearN=82 than in the well deformed systems.
