Notes: Abstract Mice exhibiting a spontaneous SLE-like lethal autoimmunity (female NZB/W hybrids) were given monthy doses of cyclophosphamide (CPA) 240 mg/kg p.o. starting at four months of age. Antibodies to DNA and sheep red blood cells (SRBC) were measured as well as general well being of the mice. The CPA-treated group demonstrated a marked increased in survival compared to the untreated controls with reduction of anti-DNA antibody levels but only a slight inhibition of the anamnestic response to SRBC immunization.

Notes: A method for recording the fetal electroencephalogram (EEG) during labour is described. Technical specifications for the construction of a suitable electrode are detailed. One hundred and twenty-three patients in labour were monitored using this technique and the success rate of obtaining records for analysis was 91 per cent.

Notes: We examined the possibility that the popliteal lymph node serves as the source of the lymphocytes that, together with macrophages, characterize Ihc lesion produced by infection with Mycobacterium marinum in the hind footpad of Ihc mouse. Naive mice were partially protected against challenge with M. marinum in the hind footpad by intravenous infusion of lymphoc) its harvested from the popliteal nodes of donor mice infected with M. marinum 7 days earlier. Lymphocytes harvested from the popliteal nodes of infected donors, labelled in vitro with 3H-uridine, and infused intravenously into naive mice that were immediately challenged in the hind footpads with M. marinum, localized in the popliteal nodes of the recipient mice but nol in the footpad lesions. Lymphocytes harvested from the spleens of naive donors and labelled in vitro appeared to home to the popliteal nude draining the M. marinum-infected footpad. Thus, the primary rule of the popliteal lymph node appeared to be passive trapping of the lymphocytes brought to it by the circulairon or afferent lymphatics. We then tried lo locate the sources of bolh lymphocytes and macrophages that characterize the lesion. Temporary occlusion of the abdominal aorta prevented labelling by intravenously infused 3H-thymidine (3H-TdR) of the mononuclear cells of both footpad lesion and popliteal node. Temporary occlusion of the left common iliac artery during 3H-TdR infusion prevented immediate labelling on the ipsilateral side. After 24 and 48 h, however, small numbers of labelled lymphocyles were found in the left hind footpad lesion. Amputation of the right leg at the hip joint, but run right poplitial lymphadenectomy, performed immediately after re-estublishment of patency of the left common iliac artery, prevented the late influx of labelled lymphocytes into the lesion of the left hind footpad. Thus, the chief source of both the lymphocytes and the macrophages of the footpad lesion appeared lo be the lesion ilself.

Notes: The mass spectra of 5,6,6a,7,12,12a-hexahydrobenzo[a]anthracene and 2-methoxy, 3-methoxy-, 4-methoxy and 1-methyl-4-methoxy derivatives are reported. Among the fragment ions observed under electron impact ionization, [C8H8]+· and [M—C8H8]+· can be generated by a retro-Diels-Alder process. Studies of metastable ion reactions show these ions to be formed by fragmentation directly from the molecular ion. The CA spectra of the [C8H8]+· ions from the subject compounds were compared with spectra from ions of the same composition from various sources. From these data, kinetic energy release measurements and stereochemical considerations, it is concluded that these ions are formed by a stepwise, rather than a concerted mechanism.

Abstract: Résumé L'introduction en 1974 du «Britain's Health and Safety at Work Act» a marqué dans les conceptions et l'approche de l'hygiène et de la sécurité professionnelles un changement qui aura à long terme des effets importants sur l'organisation de ces disciplines.
Notes: Summary Britain's Health and Safety at Work Act introduced in 1974 marked a change in approach to occupational health and safety which is having important long-term effects on the organization of occupational health and safety in Britain. The purpose of this paper is to outline the broad principles of approach to health and safety at work contained within the 1974 Act; highlight the implications of the new Act for employers, managers, employees, and representative organizations, and discuss the developments in the organization of occupational health and safety as a result of the 1974 Act.
