Notes: Abstract An anti-inflammatory factor (AIF) was highly purified from normal bovine serum. The purified AIF was a polysaccharide which was formed from a low molecular substance Pro-AIF by macromolecularization. AIF showed potent inhibitory activities against carrageenin induced edema in rats and PMN-leucocyte chemotaxis. It showed no inhibition in cutaneous reaction with serotonin, bradykinin or a mediator releaser compound 48/80. No inhibition was also observed in thermally induced pain, reversed passive Arthus reaction and adjuvant polyarthritis in rats. With these results, the role of AIF in inflammation was discussed.

Notes: A 48–year-old Japanese woman with systemic lupus erythematosus-like lesions of the skin and lips was found to have hereditary angio-oedema. Complement studies revealed low CH5O, C19, C4 and C1 inhibitor levels, with normal C3 and C5 levels. Dramatic clinical improvement followed fresh normal human blood transfusion and systemic betamethasone administration, while the deficient complement component levels were unchanged.

Notes: Summary Applying the Galerkin procedure to the Donnell basic equations, fairly accurate solutions are obtained for the postbuckling behavior of clamped circular cylindrical shells subjected to torsion. Through detailed calculations, main postbuckling characteristics, i.e., connections of the angle of twist, axial shortening and deflection with applied torque, are clarified for a wide range of shell geometrics. The results here obtained are ascertained to be in good agreement with the corresponding experimental results.

Notes: Abstract Detailed experimental studies are performed on the postbuckling behavior of circular cylindrical shells under compression, by using polyester test cylinders with the geometric parameterZ ranging from 20 to 1000. In each case, variations of the equilibrium load, circumferential wave number and maximum inward and outward deflections, with applied edge shortenings, are clarified. Contour lines for typical postbuckling configurations are also shown. It is found that, as the cylinder is compressed beyond the primary buckling, secondary bucklings take place successively with diminishing wave numbers, and that postbuckling equilibrium loads become significantly lower than those at buckling asZ increases. Further, for short shells withZ≦100, the buckled waveforms are always symmetric with one-tier diamond buckles, while for longer shells, asymmetric postbuckling patterns with two tiers of buckles dominate.
