Notes: Summary Two ova implanted in one uterus were found at the autopsy of a 28-year-old woman. The ovulation age of both implantations has been estimated to be 10–12 days. The presence of two equally large corpora lutea, one in each ovary, indicates that the implanted ova originated from different ovaries. Thus, an “ovulatio biovarialis” seems to be the basis for the dizygotic twinning in this case. The case is believed to be the only documented example of a very early dizygotic, fraternal pregnancy in humans.

Notes: Abstract Cercariae of the trematodeCryptocotyle concavum, which encyst in skin and/or kidney of sticklebacks and gobies, were studied in the Schlei Fjord (western Baltic Sea). Mean incidence of dermal cysts was 48 % inGasterosteus aculeatus and 37 % inPungitius pungitius. No cysts were found in the kidneys of sticklebacks. While 97 % ofPomatoschistus microps had encysted metacercariae in the kidneys, only 2 % had cysts in the skin.Pomatoschistus minutus, however, showed hardly any cyst infestation of either skin or kidney. InP. microps the intensity of infestation by metacercariae was frequently more than 50 cysts; in contrast, sticklebacks rarely exhibited more than 5 dermal cysts. Infested fish were larger than 10 mm in total length, the incidence rate increasing with growth. Parasitic infestation depends on ambient salinity:C. concavum was not found at salinities below 4 ‰. In contrast to the high incidence in fish, the first hosts — the snailsHydrobia stagnalis andH. neglecta — showed remarkably low infection rates (3 to 5 %). The findings reported are related to the distribution ofC. concavum, the mode of life of infested fish, the feeding habits of the final hosts and the infestation ofP. microps by other parasites. Evidently,P. microps represents an optimal second host forC. concavum.

Notes: Abstract The inclusive cross section for the production ofK s 0 mesons, Λ and $$\bar \Lambda$$ particles in proton-proton interactions at $$\sqrt s = 63$$ GeV is presented. The produced particles have been detected in the full phase space. Behaviour of the longitudinal and transversal depandences of the cross sections are discussed. The total production cross sections for s 0 mesons and Λ particles was determined to $$\sigma _{{\rm K}_S^0 } = (25.5 \pm 1.4)$$ mb andσ Λ =(7.8±1.2) mb respectively. A strong energy dependence of the production cross sections is observed.

Notes: Abstract Events with a single highp T charged particle were recorded with the Split-Field-Magnet Detector in proton-proton collisions at the CERN-ISR. In the jet opposite to the trigger region the densities of photons and reconstructed neutral pions were measured with a liquid argon shower counter. Scaled momentum distributions of these particles are given and compared with those of charged pions. The spectra of charged and neutral pions coincide. The production cross-section of neutrals in the away jet shows no dependence on the flavour of the trigger particle.

Notes: Summary From February to November 1981 the diagnostic relevance of ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was compared prospectively in 75 patients with suspected pancreatic disease. Final diagnosis was confirmed by autopsy, surgery, clinical course, and further laboratory data. Thus it was possible to exclude pancreatic disorders in 32 patients. By ERCP we diagnosed all tumors; sensitivity was 100%. Sensitivity of US and CT were 63% each. In five cases US made the false positive diagnosis” pancreatic malignant tumor” (specifity 93%), CT and ERCP in two cases (specifity 97% each). In chronic pancreatitis specifity of US and ERCP were 100% and specifity of CT was 98%. Sensitivity of ERCP amounted to 93%, CT and US revealed 74% and 52%, respectively. We conclude that ERCP is the best morphologic diagnostic tool in differentiating chronic pancreatitis from pancreatic carcinoma. US is a good screening method and CT reveals good diagnostic results in acute pancreatitis.

Notes: Summary Calcific deposits have been demonstrated grossly in the internal elastic membrane of splenic arteries. They are seen on the margins of membrane gaps as pairs of continuous or interrupted black bands (“calcific bands”). When the calcification is pronounced, nearly the whole system of ramifying and communicating membrane gaps is discerned grossly on the inner surface of the arteries. On the inside of the convex segments of the tortuous splenic arteries the membrane gaps are more numerous and wider then on the inside of the concave segments. Consequently, the calcific deposits are commoner on the convex segments. The development of gaps in the internal elastic membrane on the convex segments is probably the result of distension by the greater hydraulic pressure on these parts of the tortuous artery. This also leads to thinning of the media and interruption of the elastic networks in the adventitia in these parts of the artery.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mit der abgewandelten v.
Notes: Summary Calcifications of the femoral and popliteal veins were demonstrated grossly by a modified von Kossa technique and found in all thirty 63–88 year old male subjects. The calcifications appeared on the inside of veins as grayish or black spots, or as fields or broader stripes. In 5 subjects more than 1/4 of the intimal surface was occupied by the calcified areas. The calcifications were predominantly localized just below the valves and their commissures, in the sinus, at the entires of the tributaries, and proximal to them. The sector of vein that adhered to the artery remained, as a rule, free of calcific deposits. Microradiographically and microscopically the calcifications appeared as fine granular deposits within the markedly thickened intima. In one half of all cases, calcific plaques were found in the vein microradiographs. The femoral and popliteal veins represent presumably the most common site of the pronounced calcifications in the human venous system.

Lebensdekade.
Notes: Summary Microradiographic and microscopic studies of tangential sections from the inner wall of the arteries of the lower limb reveal an early band-like calcification of the internal elastic membrane around the margins of its preexisting circular split-like openings. This type of calcification (pairs of circularly oriented calcific bands) is regularly found in the A. femoralis and A. poplitea in the second decade. As body-growth ceases, the calcific bands in these arteries become wide-spread. Later, widening and confluence of calcific bands occurs and sometimes leads to sheet-like mineralisation of internal elastic membrane. On the medial aspect of the calcific bands grain-like calcific deposits develop early. Subsequently they become confluent and form larger incrustations which follow the course of the calcific bands. Thus the development of ring-like calcific deposits which are typical for the later stages of Mönckeberg sclerosis depends partly on the earlier stages of mineralization of the elastic membrane.
