Notes: Summary The authors describe two rare cases of extraneural metastases of glioblastoma multiforme and of astrocytoma III–IV, but with different distribution routes. In the first case—astrocytoma III–IV—via the lymphatic system, with metastases in the cervical lymph nodes; in the second case—glioblastoma—via the blood system, with metastases in the sternum and vertebrae. Survival times were 18 months in the astrocytoma case (operation plus irradiation), and 6 months in the glioblastoma case (operation, irradiation, and chemotherapy). The discussion deals with the possible paths of the metastases, the connection between metastatic spread and survival time (in the longer surviving patient the metastases were discovered together with the recurrence), and problems in deciding the individual therapy.

Notes: Summary The combination of chemotherapy and irradiation for the treatment of malignant intracerebral tumours is increasing, and survival times longer than those after monotherapy are reported. The suitability of simultaneous radio-chemotherapy using BCNU-Bleomycin, a regimen in which has been followed 38 patients of this hospital (up to 31 December 1981) is critically discussed. Statistics of 30 patients with treatment ended by 31 December 1980 and case histories of two patients with fatal complications, aspergillosis in the one and necrotizing colitis in the other, are presented. The value of the various agents used for chemotherapy is discussed with respect to the survival rates and observed side effects in all the patients. The use of Bleomycin is questioned.

Notes: 1. In Sprague-Dawley rats, two-kidney, one-clip renal hypertension was induced, and the drinking behaviour as well as total fluid and sodium intake were studied before and for 16 days after the operation.2. When water alone was offered as drinking fluid, the blood pressure reached values that were by about 20 mmHg higher than those in the rats which had free choice of drinking water or 2% saline.3. In those rats which had water and 2% saline to drink, the total sodium and fluid intake rose transiently for three days, as compared with that of the sham-operated controls, and increased steeply starting from the 7th and 10th day, respectively. When a tighter stenosis of the renal artery was induced, the pressure rose more rapidly, and the total fluid and sodium intake increased continuously after the operation until the end of the experiment.4. A positive correlation was demonstrable between the height of blood pressure and the total daily intake of fluid and sodium, respectively.5. The relation between the total daily fluid and the total daily sodium intake followed a straight regression line.6. The hypertensive rats which had a high total sodium intake responded to the withdrawal of the 2% saline solution, within 2 days, with increased water intake, decreased food intake, and loss of body weight, whereas the blood pressure remained high.7. In the two-kidney, one-clip hypertension, no ‘critical level of blood pressure’ can be defined, beyond which the contralateral kidney starts to lose sodium.

Notes: Summary In a 8-year period 102 patients with advanced inoperable head and neck tumors and recurrences were treated with irradiation after so called partial synchronization with chemotherapy. During the first 2 years only 5FU was used for chemotherapy; later on the highly differentiated keratinizing squamous cell carcinomas were treated with bleomycin. For the other malignant neoplasias we used 5FU and adriamycin, preferring the latter. This chemotherapy followed by irradiation was tolerated with minimal complications and insignificant side effects. The breakdown of survival rates according to the tumor localization showed the best 5-year survival rates of patients with laryngeal/hypopharyngeal carcinomas (advanced tumors or recurrences, respectively). Thus, combined therapies seem to lead to a prolongation of life of reasonable quality and are hence a useful supplement to the therapeutical methods for advanced ENT malignant tumors.

Notes: Summary In the decade 1969–1979 145 patients with primary cell carcinomas in the oral tongue and mouth-floor region were handled. In general the tumors were in the advanced stage: the treatment was surgical and/or radiological, or a “partial-synchronisation” regimen. In 60 cases (42%) recurrences occurred, mostly in the first two years after treatment. The tumor-stage and primary distribution, usually in the region of the original tumor or the associated lymph system, of the recurrences are analysed. There follows an assessment of the various treatments of the recurrences (operation and/or irradiation, “partial-synchronisation” with time/dose dependence using the cytostatica Bleomycin, 5-FU, Vincristine and Adriamycine) and their success measured on the complications observed and the survival-times.

Notes: Summary Intracerebroventricular injections of angiotensin II in anesthetized rhesus monkeys increase systemic blood pressure and heart rate. These effects are accompanied by an increase in plasma ADH, cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline. Angiotensin II may participate in central mechanisms of blood pressure regulation by its stimulatory effect on the sympathetic nervous system, on ADH and on ACTH release in primates.

Notes: Summary A case of aspergillus fumigatus involving the lungs, ribs and thoracic vertebrae is described. Extensive osteoclasia followed by paraplegia and the primary nature of the aspergillosis make the case exceptional.

Notes: Abstract Plasma catecholamines and vascular response to noradrenaline were studied in phosphate depleted rats. Phosphate depletion was induced in rats by dietary phosphorus deprivation for 6 weeks. Basal plasma concentrations of noradrenaline, adrenaline and dopamine were elevated in phosphate depleted rats compared to pairfed control rats. After exposure to cold (4° C, 45 min) the rise in plasma catecholamines was much more pronounced in phosphate depleted rats. In the isolated perfused rat heart, the uptake of tritiated noradrenaline was unchanged. In the isolated perfused hindlimb preparation the vascular response to noradrenaline, but not to potassium chloride and argininevasopressin was significantly diminished in phosphate depleted rats. It is concluded that in phosphate depletion sympathetic activity is elevated and vascular response to noradrenaline diminished.
