Notes: Summary The bacterial cell-wall peptidoglycan peptides and related compounds coupled with some fatty acids were synthesized, and their immunostimulating property was examined by carbon clearance assay. All the new compounds (2–6) proved to possess significant potencies superior to that of FK-156 (1).

Notes: Summary In exercised female rats, the elastin content of the thoracic and abdominal aorta decreased by 4–8% (p〈0.05). The collagen content in the thoracic aorta, was unchanged but in the abdominal aorta was reduced by 5.2% (p〈0.05). These results are discussed in connection with physical training.

Notes: Abstract Ion-release of the rabbit vitreous body through a dialysis membrane against water was studied. To evaluate one of thermal changes in the vitreous properties, the vitreous was heated or cooled before dialysis. The average wet weight of the normal vitreous was 1.61±0.20 g and dry to wet weight ratio was 1.33±0.04%. The dry weight, sodium, potassium, and chloride concentrations of the vitreous were decreased as an exponential function curve by dialysis. A decreasing ratio was prominent in the heated vitreous, the frozen vitreous and the non-thermo-treated (control) vitreous in turn. Calcium and magnesium release from the rabbit vitreous body was slow and differences among the heated, frozen and non-thermo-treated vitreous bodies were not significant, suggesting some different capture-mechanisms between the monovalent and bivalent ions.

Notes: Summary Activities of glycolytic enzymes in the aorta were investigated in female Wistar rats. There were two groups of rats; one served as the control (sedentary rats), while the other group was forced to run on a treadmill for 10 weeks. In the control animals, the activities of hexokinase, phosphofructokinase and aldolase were relatively lower than those of the other glycolytic enzymes (phosphoglucose isomerase, lactate dehydrogenase and pyruvate kinase). After exercise, the activity of phosphofructokinase increased by 15%, whereas the other enzymatic activities were much the same as in the controls. Within the limits of the experiments, the increased percentage of phosphofructokinase was statistically significant (p〈0.05). Since phosphofructokinase is a putative rate limiting enzyme, this enzymatic activation may indicate that glycolytic activity in the rat aorta is enhanced during and after running exercise.

Notes: Summary Alkaline phosphatase in the brush border of areas of intestinal metaplasia of human stomach was studied cytochemically. All absorptive cells in the upper part of the villi of the duodenum had strong alkaline phosphatase activity but, in areas of intestinal metaplasia, the metaplastic glands consisted of alkaline phosphatase-positive and negative absorptive cells. Alkaline phosphatase activity was found in tall dense microvilli of absorptive cells in areas of intestinal metaplasia and in the duodenum. However, in some areas of metaplastic epithelium, the activity was very weak in some tall dense microvilli of absorptive cells but strong in those of neighbouring absorptive cells. No alkaline phosphatase activity was found in short sparse microvilli of absorptive cells in areas of intestinal metaplasia. The difference in alkaline phosphatase activity in microvilli of different cells in areas of intestinal metaplasia, which is not seen in the duodenum, indicates abnormal morphological and enzymatic differentiation in intestinal metaplasia.
