Notes: Abstract The diffusion behaviour of implanted boron in silicon was investigated using the10B(n,α)7 Li nuclear reaction. An anomalous behavior with a strong reduction of the diffusivity above an effective solubility limit at 1.5×1019, 6×1019, and 1.1×1020 cm−3 was found for annealing temperatures of 800, 900, and 1,000°C, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Tetrameric lactate dehydrogenase from Bacillus stearothermophilus exhibits unusual stability towards high hydrostatic pressure: In contrast to the mesophilic enzyme, incubation at pressures up to 2.8 kbar does not cause irreversible denaturation. Hydridization under these conditions suggests partial dissociation to the dimer, indicating that reassociation occurs within the dead-time after pressure release (〈20 s at ≦40 μ/ml, 20° C). Incubation at P〈2.8 kbar affects neither the native quaternary structure nor the catalytic function of the enzyme. Reconstitution of the unfolded and dissociated subunits after denaturation, e.g., in 6 M guanidine ·HCl, is characterized by fast association favouring the native assembled structure. Evidence from spectroscopic measurements shows that reconstitution starts with a fast refolding reaction generating a native-like conformation. The subsequent rate-determining transconformation of the “structured monomers” governs the kinetics of reactivation and reassociation as one single first-order process. Chemical crosslinking with glutaraldehyde proves that the “structured monomers” undergo fast association to form the tetrameric final state of reconstitution, with significant amounts of dimeric intermediates being detectable. The renatured enzyme is indistinguishable from the native enzyme regarding its physicochemical and enzymological properties (e.g., activation by fructose-1,6-bisphosphate, and susceptibility towards proteolytic digestion).

Notes: Abstract In this paper we establish a forward error analysis of the generalized complete Horner scheme for a polynomial $$p = \sum {a_j X^{n - j} } $$ with pivotal pointsz 1, ...,z n . The error analysis is based on the linearization method whose fundamental tools are systems of linear error equations and associated condition numbers which yield optimal bounds of the possible errors under data perturbations and rounding errors in floating point arithmetic. For Horner's scheme the bounds may be calculated by simple recurrences. The ordinary complete Horner scheme is characterized byz=z 1=...=z n . In contrast to the hitherto known error estimates for this special case our new optimal bounds for the polynomialp atz differ from those for the polynomial $$p_a = \sum {\left| {a_j } \right|X^{n - j} } $$ at |z| and thus take into account the possible partial cancellation of terms. The error estimates are illustrated by a series of numerical examples.

Notes: Summary The rare application of external stabilisation requires special knowledge of its indications and surgical assembly, which are closely linked to usually serious bone and soft-tissue damage, topographical prerequisites and biomechanical requirements. This paper differentiates the indications for external osteosynthesis of the femur, immobilisation using external fixation to bridge a joint, unstable fractures of the pelvic girdle, osteosynthesis and application of the fixateur externe in the region of the knee, hip and hand joints, as well as the foot. Combinations of internal and external osteosynthesis techniques in the femur and tibia are presented and discussed. Criteria are discussed for changing from primary external to final internal osteosynthesis, as well as osteotaxis indicated solely by the soft tissue or in plastic surgery.

Notes: Summary Histologic findings in vocal cord specimens of 148 male autopsy cases (ages 15–91) were compared to a retrospective anamnesis of smoking habits. The relative frequency of normal squamous epithelium is 83.3% in non-smokers, gradually decreasing from 56.3% in light to 45.8% in moderate, and finally 30.6% in heavy smokers. Ex-smokers were found to return to approximately the level of light smokers (54.2%). Precancerous lesions (dysplasia and carcinoma in situ) and carcinoma were found at lowest rates in non-smokers (4.2%) rising accordingly from 12.5% in light to 22.9% in moderate, and to 47.2% in heavy smokers, and returning to the level of light smokers (12.5%) in ex-smokers. Rates of relative frequency were rather similar, if less drastic, for hyperplastic and parakeratotic or keratinizing epithelial changes. The evaluation of lifetime tobacco consumption correlated to histologic findings in individual cases revealed an analogous pattern. Results suggest a very clear relationship between changes of vocal cord epithelia, and the quantities of tobacco consumed over a lifetime. They provide additional arguments in favor of the term “dysplasia” which, currently used to define precancerous lesions in various organs, may be suitably adopted for the morphological classification of precancerous changes of vocal cord epithelium.

Notes: Summary Calcified cerebral necrosis was an unusual finding at the autopsy of a 13-year-old girl who died after prolonged therapy for ALL. The patient had shown symptoms of progressive cerebral damage subsequent to a second cycle of prophylactic high-dose cytostatic therapy combined with cranial irradiation. Pathoanatomic examination revealed extensive florid recurrency of meningosis and leukemic encephalosis with scalloped calcified necroses measuring up to 5 cm, in the medullar layer of brain and cerebellum. Located predominantly near the ventricular area, encapsulated necroses showed many fibrous vessels with thickened walls and stenosed or obstructed lumina. The cerebral cortex remained largely unaffected by tissue destruction. Besides methotrexate toxicity and the enhancing effect of irradiation the vascular involvement was interpreted as a particularly important factor. Formal pathogenesis is attributed to combined chemo- and radiotherapy in parallel to leukemic infiltration of vascular walls and partial obstruction of lumina by tumor emboli. Wall damage, severe fibrosis, and consecutive nutritional defects result in the destruction of cerebral tissue. The preferential occurrence of necroses in cortex-adjacent medullar layers is explained by the relatively poor blood supply of this border zone between meningeal and intracerebral vasculature. From the terminal pattern of multiple calcified necroses in cerebral tissue, no safe conclusion can be drawn pathoanatomically with regard to the actually fatal factor, whether it is the leukemic infiltration of vascular walls, the effect of cytostatic agents, or that of irradiation. The proposed multifactorial pathogenesis of cerebral calcification may be supported by computed tomography (CT) intra vitam.
