Notes: Culture and assay procedures are described for the generation and the subsequent detection of single antigen-specific antibody-secreting cells after in vitro stimulation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes with tetanus toxoid. Simple, specific and sensitive, this new assay-culture system is well suited for the analysis of specific antibody production in man.

Notes: Abstract The mechanical loss factor of high density polyethylene has been measured during creep and stress relaxation experiments. The application of a constant stress (creep) or strain (relaxation) resulted in an instantaneous increase in tan δ above the value obtained in absence of the creep or relaxation process. During the flow the tanδ-value decreased and approached an apparent equilibrium value slightly above the value obtained without the static load or deformation. This behaviour was observed both at 1 and 10 Hz and at 23 and 60 °C. It is suggested that this time dependence of the mechanical loss factor is associated with the basic mechanisms responsible for the creep or relaxation process itself.

Notes: Abstract To compare ileostomists' sexual life before and after conversion from a conventional spout to a continent pouch ileostomy, questionnaires were sent to 48 ileostomists with experience with both types of ileostomy. Forty-two patients (88%) returned their questionnaires; 29 were women. In answer to the question about the effect of their ileostomy on their sexual performance, 98% replied that they had sometimes felt embarrassed, uncertain, or inhibited because of the conventional ileostomy, whereas only 24% felt so after conversion to a continent ileostomy. Eighty-five percent felt that the conventional ileostomy negatively influenced their body image, whereas only 5% considered this to be the case after conversion to continent ileostomy. Eighty-five percent of the patients claimed that the quality of their sexual life had improved after conversion to continent ileostomy. The results suggest that a conventional ileostomy influences sexual life more than is generally recognized, and that conversion to continent ileostomy can improve the quality of sexual life in such patients.

Notes: [Auszug] Interactions between C. rubra and anthophilous insects were observed on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea during 1980-82. The flowers were visited by various insects but regularly only by males of C. fuliginosum and C. campanularum. The males performed repetitive patrolling flights8 between ...

Notes: Summary Thirty-three patients with pityriasis rosea were studied with regard to the possible presence of circulating and cutaneously deposited immune complexes. The levels of circulating immune complexes, determined by a solid-phase C1 q -binding assay, were not different from those of healthy control individuals. The levels were similar in samples obtained during the initial and during the remission stages of the disease. Cutaneous deposits of immunoglobulin and/or complement were found in only 5 of 33 patients. This study does not support the concept that circulating immune complexes are important for the development of the secondary skin lesions in pityriasis rosea.

Notes: Abstract A rapid bioluminescent assay for determining netilmicin and tobramycin concentrations in serum based on the dose-dependent effect of these agents on the accumulation of extracellular ATP inEscherichia coli LU 14 cultures is presented. This strain ofEscherichia coli is unaffected by antibiotics used in combination with aminoglycosides and it lacks significant ATP-ase activity, which is a prerequisite for extracellular ATP accumulation. ATP was quantified by the firefly bioluminescence system. The accuracy of the bioluminescent assay expressed as mean coefficient of variation over the therapeutic range was 3.2 %; corresponding figures for EMIT and an agar disk diffusion assay were 4.2 % and 4.8 % respectively. All methods used correlated well (r=0.935−0.986) when they were evaluated on clinical serum specimens. The bioluminescent assay requires 25μl serum and results are available within 75 min.

Notes: Abstract Natural radiative lifetimes in the perturbed 6s n s 1 D 2 (n=12−30) sequence of barium have been measured using the PUMOLS (PUlse-MOdulated Laser Spectroscopy) method, which incorporates pulse-modulation of a CW dye-laser beam and delayed coincidence techniques. Principal perturbers are the 5d 7d 3 F 2 and1 D 2 states. Lifetimes were also measured for these shortlived valence states, which through configuration mixing cause drastic decreases in lifetime values in the region of perturbation of the 6s n d 1 D 2 sequence. Two-step laser excitation from the ground 6s 2 1 S 0 state via the 6s 6p 1 P 1 state was employed. Special care was taken to determine the influence of black-body radiation transitions on the measured lifetimes.

Notes: Abstract Using the28Si(n, γ)29Si reaction, transitions to the ground state and first excited state in29Si have been studied in the neutron energy range 3–14 MeV with improved neutron energy resolution (of about 100 keV). The 90° cross sections show considerable structure in the entire neutron energy range. Comparison with theoretical calculations shows that compound-nucleus and direct-semidirect processes account for the non-resonant part (smoothly varying part) of the cross section. A microscopic model is, however, required to describe the resonance structure. Continuum shell-model calculations have proven to be a very promising means towards a better understanding of the capture process in, and below, the giant resonance region in light nuclei. The angular distributions of gamma rays in the neutron energy range 8–14 MeV indicate that the capture reaction is mainly of direct character and that the effect of interference between the electric dipole and isoscalar quadrupole resonance is weak.
