Notes: Abstract A novel spectroscopic method for highly sensitive detection of hot-band transitions based on infrared-infrared double resonance in a molecular beam was successfully demonstrated. The intensity of the infrared transitions from a vibrationally excited state is enhanced by two orders of magnitude by resonant laser pumping. The hot-band transitions are identified in connection with the assigned transitions in the fundamental band. Doppler-free spectral lines are observed. The experiment was carried out on the 2v 3←v 3 transitions of CH3F with CO2 laser pumping and probing.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das allgemein akzeptierte “Porenmodell” für Diffusion durch Membranen wurde abgewandelt and die sterische Hinderung der diffundierenden Moleküle berücksichtigt.
Notes: Summary The generally accepted “pore model” for diffusion is modified by taking account the steric hindrance of diffusing molecules. The validity of the modified model is examined for the steady state diffusion measurement of eight dyes through four kinds of regenelated cellulose membranes, at 50 °C. Both the earlier and modified “true” diffusion coefficients, meaning the diffusivities of diffusing molecules within the water-filled cellulose pores, are obtained. The most reasonable explanation of these data is done under the assumption that the diffusion probability does not depend on the elongated diagonal of the diffusing molecule, but on the slightly larger radius than that of minimum cross-section of it. The diffusivities of diffusing molecules in the pores are little affected by the pore diameter of membranes, but they are in general 30 ∼ 40% smaller than the free diffusion coefficients, obtained by capillary method.

Notes: Abstract Novel techniques to observe coherent transients are successfully demonstrated on microwave transitions of NH3, H2O, OCS, and O2. The relaxation rate constants in thev 2 excited state of NH3 are obtained by infrared experiments.

Notes: Abstract Trabecular meshwork and iris were studied by light and electron microscopy in a 40-year-old female with pigmentary glaucoma. Elevation of the intraocular pressure was most likely due to closure the intertrabecular space by pigment granules and large cells resembling clump cells, fibrous substances, and hypertrophied endothelial cells of the trabecular sheet, which had phagocytized pigment granules.

Notes: Abstract The kinetic properties of phosphofructokinases (PFKs) from normal human liver, muscle and erythrocytes, and from erythrocytes of two unrelated patients with type VII glycogenosis (muscle PFK deficiency, McKusick 23280) were analysed in this study. Sensitivity to inhibition by ATP and to inhibition by 3-phosphoglycerate, 2-phosphoglycerate, phosphoenolpyruvate and citrate were quite different for muscle and liver PFKs. The kinetic characteristics of normal erythrocyte PFK were intermediate between those of muscle and liver PFKs. The kinetic constants of erythrocyte PFK of a patient in one family were indistinguishable from those in the other family. In addition, kinetic behaviour of residual PFK activity in erythrocytes from patients in the two families were quite similar to those of normal liver PFK. These results of kinetic analyses provide convincing evidence for the concept that normal erythrocyte PFK consists of muscle and liver type subunits. Residual erythrocyte PFK activity in type VII glycogenosis is thus concluded to reflect the activity of liver type PFK existing in patient's erythrocytes.

Notes: Summary The thin-layer chromatographic behavior of 49 inorganic ions has been systematically studied on layers of sulfoethyl (SE) cellulose, a strongly acidic cation-exchanger, with binary solvent mixtures consisting of sulfuric acid and an organic solvent such as methanol or acetone. The characteristic retention on the cellulose layer can be recognized for some ions forming sulfato complexes in the acid-organic solvent medium, and some aspects of the behavior are discussed. Chromatographic separations of analytical interest are also demonstrated on the SE-cellulose layer with acid-methanol and acid-acetone solutions used as mobile phases.

Notes: Summary The thin-layer chromatographic behaviour of 51 inorganic ions has been studied on a strongly acidic cation exchanger, sulfoethyl cellulose, using acetic acid and acetic acid-ammonium acetate media. Feasibilities for effective separations of analytical interest are demonstrated on the cellulose layer (0.50mm thick) in both media.

Notes: Summary Chromatographic behavior of 51 inorganic ions has been systematically studied on layers of sulfoethyl (SE) cellulose, a strongly acidic exchanger, in hydrochloric acid and in acid-ammonium thiocyanate media. The sorption of most of the ions on he SE-cellulose decreases with increasing concentration of the acid and the thiocyanate. The characteristic retention of some metal ions of SE-cellulose layer can be recognized over a low concentration of the acid or the salt. Feasibilities for separations of analytical interest are also presented in both systems.
